Chapter 2

Author: Southern Eucalyptus
"Rachel, what are you doing here?" Bryan looked at her in pleasant surprise.

Rachel flicked his forehead. "I promised I'd be here for your 25th birthday. Did you really think I'd miss it?"

Joyce patted her on the shoulder. "You've suffered a lot these past three years. If you hadn't staged your death back then, Raymond would've never let Bry off the hook."

Rachel sighed. "Had he not been so extreme, I wouldn't have done it. My heart breaks for him every year when I see him kneel in front of my grave for hours. Let's give it another two years. Once he's gotten used to Bryan's presence, I'll tell him the truth so he doesn't have to remain trapped in the past."

A loud ringing filled my brain as a bone-deep chill surged through every fiber of my being.

Ever since Rachel passed away, the audio recording she left behind became a nightmare that haunted me for years. Every year on the anniversary of her death, I would kneel at her grave for hours, begging her to visit me in my dreams. Yet, she never did.

I had always thought it was because Rachel refused to forgive me. Thus, she wouldn't even visit me in my dreams.

Little did I know, she was still alive. In that case, what was I supposed to make of the excruciating guilt and self-blame that had tormented me day and night for the past three years? What about Dad's cold looks and Mom's vicious curses?

"Ray has been pretty well-behaved lately," Mom said softly. "Maybe we shouldn't send the debt collectors after him this month."

Dad immediately knitted his brows in disapproval. "Ray's calculating and ruthless. If Joyce hadn't hired people to pose as loan sharks and hound him for repayment every month, forcing him to focus all his energy on earning money, Bry would never have a moment of peace."

Rachel nodded in agreement. "He's right. We can't give him an inch. So long as he's broke, he won't be able to stir up trouble."

My fingers dug into the window ledge so hard my fingernails nearly bent backward.

Following her passing, the astronomical high-interest loan she left behind landed squarely on my shoulders. I had liquidated all the assets under my name, but they were merely a drop in the bucket.

To pay it off, I took on the most difficult clients, tackled the most grueling projects, and worked myself to the bone day and night. Countless times, I drank until my stomach bled and was rushed to the emergency room, yet all of this was merely an elaborate act they had put on to make sure Bryan could live a carefree life.

I lifted my gaze and took in my own reflection in the window pane.

I looked drawn and worn out. Bryan, on the other hand, was radiant and polished. Even the very strands of his hair were glowing.

Every single cent I had worked my ass off to pay back in the last three years suddenly felt like a knife twisting inside me, tearing me apart with unbearable pain. A wave of suffocation washed over my chest. My legs gave out slightly, and as I stumbled, my hand accidentally knocked over a vase nearby.

The very next second, a deafening shatter rang out, and all eyes darted in my direction. The moment they saw me, their smiles froze.

Joyce was the first to rush out, seizing my wrist. A flash of panic flickered in her eyes. "What are you doing here, Ray?"

I flung her hand away and walked straight into the restaurant.

Mom sprang to her feet and instinctively stepped in front of Bryan, her eyes filled with wariness. "What do you think you're doing?"

Without sparing her a glance, I walked right up to the person I'd longed to see for three years. I stared at her blankly, and before I knew it, my tears fell onto the back of my hand, ice-cold and biting. "Why did you lie to me, Rachel?"

Rachel eyed me with a complicated expression. "I'm sorry. Bry saved my life. I couldn't stand by and watch you destroy him, so I..."

"What about me? Did I deserve to have my life destroyed for the last three years?"

Mom seized my arm and tried to reason with me. "Ray, your sister only did it for your own good. Besides, haven't you two managed to live peacefully these past two years?"

Dad sighed. "We're getting old. We can't handle all this drama anymore. Why don't you just turn a blind eye and let it go? Life will be easier for everyone then."

I drank in the sight before me. Joyce angled her body to shield Bryan behind her, while Mom and Dad stood between Rachel and me, as if I was some kind of monster they needed to protect themselves from.

The last spark of warmth inside my heart finally went out. I slowly suppressed all my emotions and responded flatly, "Alright. I won't cause any more trouble."

Joyce's company ultimately crumbled on a rainy night. When she came home that day, she was drenched from head to toe, looking utterly haggard. "Ray," she rasped. "The audit team will be coming in tomorrow. I've lost my business."I gazed at her quietly. "I know."Joyce wrapped her arms around me and closed her eyes. "At least I still have you and our baby. Let's leave this place and start over in another city. I can start from scratch. I can—""Joyce," I cut her off.She lowered her head and looked at me. I reached out and touched her stomach. Her abdomen was flat. Her waistline was sharply defined, without the slightest hint of a baby bump. "We don't have a baby. We never had one."Joyce's expression cracked like a mirror splitting right down the center. Her eyes abruptly widened, and she choked out, "What did you just say?""I lied to you," I continued calmly, looking into her eyes. "I spiked the milk you drank every day to make you believe you were pregnant." Disbeli

Following the abortion, Joyce treated me even better. I pretended to be dependent on her, and I never mentioned our past grievances. While she was completely off her guard, I deliberately brought up, with feigned hesitation, the idea of going to Sinclair Group to help her out. "I have nothing to do at home, and I keep living in my own head. If I go to the company and stay by your side, I'll feel more at ease. I can also learn how to manage some of the business." I lowered my gaze, looking as though I was afraid of causing her trouble. Without the slightest hesitation, she agreed and arranged for me to work as her personal assistant in the executive office on the top floor. The company's core financial accounts, partnership contracts, and cash flow records were all laid out in front of me.Joyce merely assumed my post-amnesia self was naive and harmless, completely unaware that I had already committed every crucial piece of information to memory. I quietly kept copies of every lo

That weekend, Joyce took me back to the Lovett residence. By the time we arrived, the table was already filled with my former favorite dishes. Mom kept piling food onto my plate, walking on eggshells throughout dinner, as though she were afraid that anything she said might trigger my memories. Midway through, someone pounded on the door. As soon as the door swung open, Bryan stood outside alone, resentment simmering beneath his gaze. The air in the room instantly froze. Mom scrambled to her feet and instinctively stepped in front of me. "Bry, what… brings you here? Why didn't you tell us you were coming?"Bryan's gaze swept past her, landing squarely on my face.I tilted my head and asked Joyce, "Who is he?" Joyce's hands froze for a fraction of a second. "He's a friend of mine.""Oh," I responded nonchalantly.Bryan's smile faded slightly as he stood rooted to the spot. His gaze darted between Rachel and Joyce. "What, am I not welcome?" Rachel was the first to walk up to

Avery Lovett. When that name registered in my mind, a flash of white light burst across my vision. Blurred images surged from the deep recesses of my mind, only to sink back into darkness.I clutched my temple and sucked in a sharp breath from the pain. That man still wore a smile. The pain in my head intensified until my legs gave out, and I stumbled sideways. …When I came to, the first thing that came into view was the familiar ceiling of my hospital room. Joyce sat on the edge of my bed. The moment she saw my eyes open, she leaned in. "You're awake! How are you feeling? Does your head hurt?"I shook my head. "It doesn't hurt." "Don't go to the garden alone again. If you want to take a walk, I'll go with you." Joyce lowered her head and tucked the blanket up around me. "There are all kinds of people out there. Now that you've lost your memories, you're an easy target." "Who was... that man in the garden?" I blinked, my voice laced with mild bewilderment. Her hand froze

Joyce stood rooted to the spot. The joy that had surged through her moments ago instantly shattered into pieces. Her eyes flickered with emotion, and her voice trembled. "Cut it out, Ray. I'm Joyce!" She took half a step forward to close the distance between us. However, every nerve in my body suddenly went taut, and a scream tore out of my throat before I could stop it. Dad, Mom, and Rachel, who had been waiting outside the room, heard the commotion, barged in, and crowded around my hospital bed. "Ray, you're awake! Don't be afraid, it's me, Rachel." I was scared out of my wits as one unfamiliar face after another closed in around me. I frantically snatched the fruit knife on my nightstand and held it out with the blade pointed away from me. My hands were trembling slightly as I yelled, "Don't come any closer! Stay away from me, all of you!" Joyce's breath hitched, and she raised her hands to show she meant no harm. Then, she softened her tone to soothe me. "Don't be afra

  • My Obsession Ruined Everything   Chapter 5

Third-person POVJoyce leaned against the cold wall outside the emergency room as the image of Raymond throwing himself out the window replayed on a loop in her mind. That final, serene smile of his was like a fine needle, pricking her heart repeatedly. For the very first time, she couldn't help wondering if she had pushed him too far. Raymond's mother, Yvette Lovett, paced back and forth beside her. All the resentment she had once held toward Raymond was now swallowed up by fear. At the end of the day, he was her own flesh and blood. When he took that leap, her legs had gone weak with terror. Bryan was the only one who looked thoroughly annoyed amid the suffocating anxiety hanging over the room. He had been waiting for hours and was starting to feel hungry. He tugged at Rachel's sleeve impatiently. "I'm famished, Rachel! Can you get me some food?"Yvette immediately frowned. "Ray is still in there, and we don't even know if he's going to make it, Bry. How do you still have
