Chapter 3

작가: Many Floaters
My father's face fell. "But you don't even come home for Christmas. Is that acceptable? That's the time when our family should be together. What's the point of giving us money when your mother and I have enough money from our pensions? We don't need your money."

"Don't be mad, Harold." Harry quickly went to my father and gently tugged on his arm. He smiled gently, "It's not easy for Charlie to be working in the capital on his own. He's in higher management now, and it's only normal that he can't make much time. I'm sure he misses both of you a lot."

However, my father only got angrier after hearing Harry's words. "What's so great about being in higher management? He's a man, and he needs to take care of his family sooner or later. It doesn't matter how high he climbs up the career ladder. He would still need to take care of his family in the end."

My mother agreed. "You're not getting any younger, Charlie. It's time you considered getting married. My colleague's daughter is about the same age as you are. She's soft-spoken and understanding, and she works around this area. She comes from a good family, and I think it'd be nice for you to meet her. You can get engaged if you're a suitable match."

I did not even hesitate to reject my mother. "I don't want to go on a blind date, and I don't want to get married."

"You don't want to get married?" My father's face fell. "Do you plan to spend the rest of your life just working?"

"Why not?" I looked right into his eyes.

"You…" My father was heaving with anger. "Your mother and I are getting old, and we need someone by our side. If you get married, we will have someone with us to depend on and take care of us. Why do you refuse to consider our well-being?"

I frowned. "Didn't I already hire Harry to take care of you?"

My father slammed the table and gave me an ultimatum. "If you refuse to get married, quit your job and come back there to take care of us! Otherwise, don't call us your parents, and we'll take Harry in as our son instead!"

I laughed angrily. "I planned to come home and work after graduation, so that I could take care of you." I looked at them as I spoke calmly. "But you felt that it would be embarrassing for me to find work in a small town when I graduated from a top university. You thought it was beneath me, and you forced me to find a job in the capital.

"It wasn't easy for me to finally find my footing in the city after years of hard work, and I'm finally leading the life I want, but you want me to give up everything by resigning and coming home just because you said so?"

I shook my head and said with conviction, "I won't be able to do that."

My father frowned, and he raised his voice, "Why not? We brought you up, but you're trying to shirk responsibility when we're asking you to take care of us?"

"I'm not shirking any responsibility," I tried to explain patiently. "I got to where I am right now by working hard all these years in the capital. If I give up my life just like that, all my hard work would be for nothing."

"So, you're turning your back on us?" My mother chimed in with a disapproving look. "We only have one son. Who can we depend on if not you?"

"I never said I was turning my back on you." I took a deep breath, trying to find a solution to this. "I can take care of you if you move to the capital with me. I'll be able to work while caring for both of you."

My father waved no with his hands, looking annoyed with me. "Move to the capital? We've been living here for decades, and all our friends and family are here. We won't be able to fit in at a strange, new place."

That was when my mother nodded in agreement. "Your father is right. You're still renting in the capital, and it's not as comfortable as staying in our own home. We don't want to move there."

I frowned. "You don't want to be there, and I can't resign. I don't think there's anything else I can do about this."

  • My Parents Chose the Caregiver Over Me   Chapter 14

I got to know a group of like-minded friends, and we would go hiking every weekend to take in the fresh air and admire the beauty of Mother Nature. We would go camping, and we would sing and chat under the starry skies, enjoying the carefree moment. We would go to the theatre, enjoy films, and share stories of our lives. I felt happy and free whenever I was with them.It was not long before I found a woman I liked. She was my partner at work and was gentle, generous, and understanding. She knew about my past and understood my pain, and she never made me do anything I did not want. She respected my career and opinions and would be by my side to comfort me whenever I was feeling tired, and she would always support me whenever I was in need of help.We got along very well. Even though our courtship was not a passionate one, it was slow, steady, and long-lasting. I knew that this was the relationship I wanted. As for the house back in my hometown, my parents were still living in the

  • My Parents Chose the Caregiver Over Me   Chapter 13

My parents wanted to visit the hospital, but realized no one could take them there. They were quite old and stumbled when they walked, making it difficult for them to get to the hospital on their own. What was even worse was that they needed money for the hospital, but realized they did not have much left from the pensions. Harry had stolen a portion of the money, and what was left was barely enough for groceries, much less pay for their medication. My parents could only lie in their cold bed, feeling horrible, with no one to take care of them or even show concern. They could not even have a warm meal. The house was empty and lonely, and only their coughs and sighs echoed throughout.Looking at the empty house and pictures of me on the wall when I was young reminded them of their monthly allowance from me and how I was considerate enough to hire Harry to take care of them. They were reminded of how every time I would buy many gifts for them when I came home, and accompany them

  • My Parents Chose the Caregiver Over Me   Chapter 12

Just as Harry prepared to rummage through my parents' bedside tables to find anything valuable, the neighbor opposite happened to take the garbage out and saw the door open with the interior looking like a mess. Seeing a man sneaking around inside and rummaging through things, the neighbor got suspicious. She quietly hid to the side and took her phone out to call the police, quietly describing the situation and saying that someone was robbing the house opposite. The police arrived very quickly with a police camera, and they dashed into the house, catching Harry right in the act. Harry turned pale when he saw the police, and he trembled so much that the bag in his hand fell to the ground. The liquor, jewelry, and cash inside fell out. There was nothing he could say against the concrete evidence in front of the police.Harry was interrogated on the spot, and he had no choice but to admit to the police that he was robbing the place. Even though the amount he took was not a lot, h

  • My Parents Chose the Caregiver Over Me   Chapter 11

"We've kicked Harry out of the house and changed the locks. We won't let him into the house anymore. Let's go back to being a family, alright?"I gently pulled my hand away. "I don't want to.""Charlie!" My mother got anxious, and her eyes reddened while holding onto my arm, refusing to let go. "That's your home. How can you not go back? You're our only son. What should we do if you don't come back with us?" "My home?" I laughed softly with ridicule and misery. "You didn't tell me about it when you changed the locks at home. You even gave my room to Harry and told me to get out, saying that I was no longer part of your family. Why didn't you say anything about it being my home then?""I…" My mother had no idea what to say, and more tears fell from her eyes. She sobbed while saying, "Those were just angry words. Please don't take it to heart, Charlie. We were wrong. We know we've made a mistake. You're our only son, and we need you to be with us in our old age. You can't just leave

  • My Parents Chose the Caregiver Over Me   Chapter 10

My parents could not take it, but there was nothing they could do about it. After all, they were the ones who took the initiative to take Harry in as their godson. If word got out about what was happening, it would be humiliating to them. Whenever my parents tried to kick Harry out, he would start making a huge fuss while saying incessantly, "Didn't you want me as your son? Isn't it normal for your son to stay in your house? If you kick me out, I'll tell everyone about how you abused me. Let's see how everyone will look at you when you walk out of this house!"My parents had no idea how to deal with Harry. All they could do was sigh as they spent the rest of their days feeling unsettled. The house eventually became a mess because of Harry. There was rubbish everywhere, and their meals were put together without care. My parents had to be careful with everything they did to avoid upsetting Harry, who might get worked up.They started to miss me as they stared at the empty house and

  • My Parents Chose the Caregiver Over Me   Chapter 9

It was not long before my mother wanted to put on her gold bracelet to visit our relatives, but could not find it, even after ransacking her cupboard for it. After some thought, she realized that Harry was the only one who had gone through her cupboard, and my parents immediately understood what had transpired, so they confronted him."Were you the one who took Sandra's gold bracelet, Harry?" My father trembled with anger as he pointed at Harry with a grim look. His eyes were filled with fury and disappointment. He had never thought that the godson he trusted would steal from them.Harry looked nonchalant as his hands were placed on his waist while he denied it, "What gold bracelet? I don't know anything about it! Stop accusing me of things I didn't do. I never took anything for you. You must have misplaced it or lost it.""There are only three of us in this house. Who else would take it if it wasn't you?" My mother started to tear up as she choked back a sob. "We've always treate
