Chapter 4

作者: Ringing Bells
Zach hesitated.

My parents flew into a rage.

My mom was so furious that she slapped me across the face.

“Yale! How old are you? How could you stoop this low? You actually dared to take that stuff?!”

My dad’s face darkened.

“Since you’re so desperate for 2,000 dollars, fine. Here’s your final test.

“Earn 2,000 dollars within a week.

“If you pass, I’ll send you to rehab and make sure you kick this habit!”

Zach could not hold back his laughter.

I felt as if I had been thrown into an icy pit. My chest heaved.

I had nowhere to vent my anger.

My parents left without another word.

Zach stayed behind and looked around the rental apartment.

“I was actually pretty worried just now. I thought you were going to pass this test too. Luckily, Mom and Dad still don’t believe you, just like always.

“I don’t think you’re going to pass this final test. Why don’t you beg me? I might help you.

“It’s only 2,000 dollars. I can introduce you to a few rich women. If you keep them happy, you won’t just make 2,000 dollars. You could make 200,000 dollars!

“Besides, Mom and Dad already think you’ve gone down the wrong path, don’t they?”

The comments were furious. People cursed Zach for being such a terrible male lead. Others urged me to explain everything to my parents as soon as possible.

Was there any point in explaining?

They were always like this. They acted as if they cared deeply about Xander and me, but their concern never amounted to anything.

It was just like how they used to call me over and over to pressure me to pay my tuition. They insisted that I stay in school, or they would no longer consider me their son.

However, when I asked them to lend me money for tuition, they said, “Yale, your education is your own responsibility. You need to find a way to pay for your own tuition. Xander needs to pay for his own tuition too.

“There are plenty of opportunities out there. As long as you’re willing to work hard, you can easily earn enough to pay your tuition. You can’t expect us to provide everything for you.”

They said that when I was still a minor. Hiring underage workers was illegal.

I had no choice but to go to remote areas and pretend I was an adult. I made money by donating blood so I could pay my tuition.

If they really cared about Xander and me as much as they claimed, they would have sent someone to investigate as soon as they heard that Xander had died.

How could they still believe I was lying after I had told them the truth so many times?

After Zach finished mocking me, he left.

I collapsed onto the floor.

I felt completely lost.

However, I did not need the 2,000 dollars to pass the test.

I needed it to pay for Xander’s funeral.

After a long time, I finally made up my mind and headed to a bar.

It was just a matter of putting on a smile and entertaining customers.

As long as I could get Xander’s funeral taken care of as soon as possible, I was willing to do whatever it took.

Yet a place like that was no place for a rookie like me.

Night after night, I gritted my teeth and forced myself to endure the discomfort as I accepted drink after drink from customers.

I had to beg before two nouveau riche finally ordered bottles.

I kept going day after day.

On the fifth day, the owner, Peter Smith, finally could not bear to see me struggle anymore.

He sighed. “I heard you’re desperate for 2,000 dollars. How about this? I’ll add up the wages and tips you’ve earned over the past few days and make it 2,000 dollars. I’ll pay you tomorrow morning.

“Once you’ve taken care of everything, you can come back and work part-time here.

“Everyone goes through hard times. You’re still young. You have a long road ahead of you.”

That small act of kindness brought tears to my eyes.

I gratefully shook Peter’s hand and thanked him.

That night, I contacted the funeral home and arranged a time for Xander’s cremation.

However, when I arrived at the bar the next morning, I saw Peter at the entrance. He looked troubled.

My heart suddenly sank.

Peter looked guilty and heartbroken. In the end, he let out a long sigh.

  • My Parents Feel Guilty After My Brother's Death   Chapter 11

“Your future fortune is disappearing right before your eyes. Aren’t you worried?“We’re devastated by Xander’s death too. We just couldn’t accept it, so we kept running from the truth. You’re the only son we have left now. Can’t you forgive us?”My dad was even more determined to convince me. He swore that there would never be another test.“You’ve passed every test. We promise we’ll never do anything to upset you again.“But look at the person you’ve become. Isn’t that because our decision back then was the right one? We really did help you become a better person. “Look at how many people online support you and care about you now.”I let out a quiet laugh.Even after everything that had happened, they still believed their decision had been right.“People support me and keep talking about what happened because they have a conscience. It has nothing to do with any decision you made.“Who I became has nothing to do with you either.“As for your fortune… Xander and I never had

I did not care about any of it. I finished the discharge paperwork and left the hospital. As soon as I walked outside, I ran into my parents. The comments were no longer defending them. The entire screen was filled with disgust and anger.[Why are they here? Haven’t they hurt Yale enough already?][I see someone with a camera over there! They must be here to put on a show, guilt-trip Yale into forgiving them, and post it online so they can play the victim and save their company!]I looked in the direction the comments pointed to and, sure enough, I saw camera flashes. So, even at this point, they still could not genuinely regret what they had done.During that time, I had received countless messages online from people who supported me.They all stood firmly on my side. They told me I had done nothing wrong. My parents were the ones who were at fault. The comments had finally stopped defending Zach just because he was the male lead. They were all supporting me and genuinely

I could not help but let out a bitter laugh. Why was I the one who always survived? Why was Xander’s life so fragile? When the nurse saw that I was awake, she quickly got up and opened the door.A police officer walked in.“Hi, Yale. Are you feeling better? Do you still feel uncomfortable?“Would you like some water?”He noticed the confusion on my face and smiled.“Don’t worry. You’re safe now.”I took a sip of water. After I heard the officer’s explanation and read the comments, I finally understood what had happened.I had suffered from malnutrition for a long time. Then, my parents beat me, and I became extremely distressed. All of that caused me to lose consciousness.Someone in Zach’s livestream saw me collapse and immediately called the police. The police arrived soon after. When they took me to the hospital for emergency treatment, they found more than just injuries from the beating. They also found needle marks on my body. While I was unconscious for those three d

They yelled at me and demanded that I bring Xander out to clear up the rumors.Zach “kindly” tried to calm my dad down.“Dad, calm down. Xander is probably hiding somewhere. No matter how much you yell, he probably won’t come out.“Mom, Dad, what Yale has done has already damaged the Parker family’s reputation. How are you going to punish him?”My parents walked toward me with cold expressions.I thought they would do what they always did. They would beat me until they were satisfied and then leave. However, then I heard Zach make a suggestion.“Mom, Dad, I don’t think he’ll stop until he sees the consequences.“How about we take him straight to the grave and livestream it? We can prove to everyone that the grave isn’t Xander’s. That will force Xander to come out, and then all these rumors will fall apart!”I looked up in shock. My parents nodded in agreement.Without another word, they dragged me to the mountain. They even called a group of bodyguards.Zach held up his pho

“When that day comes, I’ll stay with you forever, okay?”I sat there for a while longer before I finally made my way down the mountain. As soon as I reached the road, I saw Zach step out of a luxury car.“You already buried Xander? Looks like you had a great time with that stuff today. You sure had plenty of energy.“Hey, how come that car accident didn’t kill both of you? Why did you have to survive and cause me all this trouble?”I froze for a moment. Then, I looked up at him.“What do you mean?“You were behind the car accident?”Zach laughed.“Yeah. I did it. What are you going to do about it?“Do you have any proof? If you call the police, do you really think anyone will believe you?“You should be grateful that you’re still alive. At least you have a chance to confront me.“Anyway, I’m here to tell you something. Mom and Dad saw the video of you taking drugs. They were planning to make a public announcement that they were cutting ties with you.“But guess what? Every

It was a declaration that I was no longer their son.Zach casually lit a cigarette and blew the smoke in my face.“Alright, I’ll leave you alone now. Enjoy yourself.”I watched him walk away.My mind went completely blank. I felt as if insects were crawling all over me.I forced myself to look at the comments floating in the air. They kept cursing Zach and doing everything they could to comfort me.However, there was nothing they could do.All they could do was watch helplessly as I fell into the abyss.I lay numb on the cold floor. I had no idea how much time had passed. Then, my phone rang, and I finally came back to my senses. The comments reminded me of something.[Yale, it’s Ms. Lane. Answer the phone.][Yale, don’t give up yet! You have to keep going! Call the police. Tell your parents what happened! Once they know the truth, they’ll definitely stand up for you!]I froze for a moment. Then, I slowly turned my head and saw my phone a short distance away.I struggled
