Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
The rain poured down that night. Lightning lit up the sky in a chilling glow, and thunder roared so loud that it forced my buried memories to the surface.

After I failed my SAT exams and fell into depression, Jade said she wanted to cheer me up and invited me to go hiking.

Maybe because they were afraid I would do something crazy to Jade, my dad and Yara tagged along like bodyguards.

My mom was working a night shift at the hospital, so she did not come.

The screen showing the memories shifted to a scene where I fell halfway up the mountain. My shinbone snapped, and rocks cut a deep gash into my leg.

Jade was the first to notice. She told my dad and Yara to pitch a tent on the spot so I could rest inside.

Then, she pulled out a bottle of antiseptic and poured it over my wound.

“Clara, let me disinfect this first. Otherwise, it might get infected.”

As soon as she was done disinfecting my wound, I kicked her to the ground, pinned her down, and slapped her without hesitation.

“You snake! Don’t pretend to be so kind in front of me! Is it that face of yours that’s bewitched them? Is that why they won’t kick you out of the family? Is that why they’re forcing me to give you a kidney?

“Let’s see how they look at you when I ruin your pretty face!”

With that, I grabbed a small knife from the tent and plunged it down toward Jade’s cheek.

At the last second, my dad and Yara yanked me off her.

My dad slapped me hard across the face and shouted, “Clara! My patience has limits! You keep abusing Jade over and over again. Don’t make me slap you!”

“Dad, let me handle her!” Yara said and slapped me so hard I fell to the ground and could not get up.

“Dad, Yara, don’t be mad at Clara. I must have done something wrong to upset her,” Jade said.

Seeing her pitiful face ignited a furious rage in me. “You disgust me so much I want to puke! Die!”

I shoved Jade hard, and we both tumbled off the cliff beside the tent.

Before my dad and Yara could react, Jade and I had disappeared from their sight.

The screen went dark. My dad and Yara’s heart-wrenching screams filled the air. “Jade! Jade!”

The voices faded until the memory extraction paused, and there was nothing but silence.

Everything had happened so quickly and perilously that the viewers watching the memory screamed in shock. The livestream comments were filled with rows upon rows of shocked comments.

I looked over at my dad and Yara at the plaintiffs’ table.

Having relived that day, they clung to Jade as if they had survived a great disaster.

Tears streamed down my dad’s face as he sobbed and said, “Jade, thank god you’re okay. If anything had happened to you that day, I would’ve cut Clara open on the spot and buried her with you.”

“Jade, you don’t even know how scared I was back then.”

Meanwhile, the comments section was going wild.

[Oh my God, this is attempted murder! Why isn’t Clara in jail already?]

[Clara is so vicious. Jade is too kind to turn her in.]

[Jade really is too good. It’s like they say. Good people get mistreated.]

[Clara should just die! I’m voting for the Spencer family to win!]

[Same here! I’m voting for the Spencer family! There’s nothing to argue about. Just declare Clara guilty already!]

More and more people began requesting the judge to announce my defeat right away.

The judge, who always adjusted his verdicts based on public opinion, held the microphone up to my lips.

“Clara Spencer, do you wish to make an appeal?”

“Yes.”The judge’s voice snapped my parents and Yara back to reality. My mom calmly wiped away her tears and looked down at Jade on the floor.“I want every single organ in Clara’s body that has been infected with cancer cells to be transplanted into Jade.”Jade’s eyes widened in horror. She completely lost it. “No! Mom, please, don’t do this to me! I love you! “Dad, please, I’m begging you, save me! Clara’s already dead! I promise I’ll never be jealous of her again. I’ll be a good daughter and take care of you both.“Yara, you love me the most! Please, don’t let Mom do this. If they put those organs in me, I’ll die!”Yara kicked Jade aside, leaned down, and gripped her chin so hard it looked like she might crush it.“Die? Then, go die somewhere far away. Don’t die in front of me and make me sick.“Judge, my dad and I agree with my mom’s decision. Please transplant every single cancer-ridden organ from Clara’s body into Jade.”“At the request of the plaintiffs, executing the

Jade suddenly laughed. She grabbed my mom’s hand and shoved it away.“That’s right. When she called you for help, I was right there.”My mom clapped a hand over her mouth. Her frail shoulders shook. The screen switched to the final moments before my death.Jade was playing “Red Light, Green Light” with me. Each time I flinched in pain, she would slash me with her knife. In just half an hour, she had cut me 40 or 50 times. She made sure to avoid my vital spots and kept me alive so that I would feel every bit of pain. The rain poured down. It washed the blood from my body and erased the marks Jade carved into my skin. With trembling hands, I called my mom.“Mom… it hurts so much. I’m in so much pain… Please… save me…”But all I got was her furious yelling.“Clara, I don’t care what trick you’re trying to pull this time! There’s no way you’re getting out of tomorrow’s trial!“If you won’t donate your kidney to Jade willingly, then let the judge cut it out and give it to he

Lightning flashed and thunder roared. While my dad and Yara were busy getting ready to climb the mountain, Jade pulled out a sharp stone she had hidden and slashed it hard across my shin. Then, she stomped down on it, and my shinbone snapped. But Jade screamed first, “Oh my God! Clara, your leg is hurt! Dad, Yara, we should set up the tent here. Let Clara rest inside for a bit.”Just like that, Dad and Yara listened to her and went off to pitch the tent.Jade pulled out an antiseptic and bandages from her bag. She looked at me with a smug smile and said, “Aww, what a shame! Mom and Dad couldn’t bring themselves to kick you out for good.“Last night, they said if you really won’t donate your kidney, they’ll stop pushing you. They told me to wait for the next donor.”Jade let out a low, eerie laugh as she stared straight into my eyes.“But I don’t even have leukemia. I only said I needed a kidney to see who they cared about more. You or me.“To think you actually have cancer… Tur

It was a small elephant charm. On the outside, it looked just like an ordinary decoration. Please.”I suddenly laughed. Even at this point, Yara did not believe Jade would do such things.“Judge, hurry up and show the memories about the school bullying and the mountain trip.”My mom’s hands clenched into tight fists, and tears welled up in her eyes.Seeing people start to question everything, the judge played those two

Jade slowly walked toward me with a knife.“I heard your eighteenth birthday is next week. Mom and Dad are thinking of bringing you home to celebrate. What should I do? I really don’t want to see you in that house.”I dragged my suitcase past her indifferently. “If you don’t want to see me, then get lost.”But just as I took a step forward, Jade suddenly slashed at my hand that was dragging the suitcase.“Oh dear, I’m so sorry!“That suitcase looks heavy. You probably can’t carry it now, right? Let me help you.”Then, while I winced in pain, she grabbed my suitcase and threw it straight into the rushing river beneath the bridge. Within seconds, it was swept away without a trace.I turned and punched her hard in the face. “What the hell is wrong with you?! Get it back!”But the next second, Jade slashed her own wrist with the knife. Blood streamed down as she glared at me, then glanced up at the security camera on the bridge.“Guess what?
