Chapter 4

Author: Mimi Winterrest
Mom picked up the old phone she kept solely for contacting me and began typing a message.

Her expression was perfectly calm, as though she were asking me to give up some worthless trinket.

[Bruno, I think I’m dying. The doctor says that my kidneys are failing and that I need an urgent transplant. You’re my only hope. Please come to the hospital and save me.]

Message sent.

Mom casually tossed the phone aside and settled back against the sofa. She seemed completely certain that her plan would work.

“Just wait. Bruno has always put us first. He’ll call back immediately, crying and promising to help.”

Dad nodded. He was plucking a grape from the fruit bowl and feeding it to Penelope. “That’s true. He may be a little naive, but he genuinely loves us.”

I stared at that old phone, shaking with horror and disbelief.

A kidney?

Mom, did you know? Mine had failed long ago. When I was diagnosed with leukemia two years ago, the doctor told me that my organs were gradually shutting down.

Years of working around dangerously high levels of formaldehyde, pushing myself beyond exhaustion, and living with chronic malnutrition had destroyed my body.

There was not a single healthy organ left inside me.

Even if I wanted to give her a kidney, she could never use it.

I wanted to tell them. I wanted to explain.

I wanted to say, “Mom, it’s not that I don’t want to give you one. I just can’t give you mine anymore.”

I was dead. My body had gone cold and stiff at my desk.

I could not make a sound. All I could do was watch the minutes tick by.

Ten minutes passed, then half an hour.

The phone remained silent. Nothing happened.

Mom’s expression began to sour. Her smug confidence gradually gave way to offended anger.

“What is going on?” She frowned. “He always responds immediately when I ask for money. Why is he ignoring me today?”

“Maybe he is busy,” Dad suggested. “He is at work, after all.”

“What matters more, his job or his mother’s life?” Mom slammed her hand against the table.

“He clearly doesn’t want to donate! Sending us a little money every month is easy when it lets him pretend to be a devoted son.

“But the moment we ask him to make a real personal sacrifice, his true nature comes out. I knew it! People never really change. Deep down, he is still the same selfish, spoiled heir he always was!”

Mom rose and paced around the living room. She was growing angrier with every word.

“I was even prepared to let him live in luxury if he agreed to donate. Clearly, I gave him too much credit!

“That ungrateful brat has never truly cared about us. Honey, look at the wonderful son you kept defending! When it truly matters, a daughter is the one you can count on!”

Dad’s expression darkened as well. He looked deeply disappointed, as though I were a lost cause.

“That boy... He has broken my heart. Did all the effort we put into teaching him amount to nothing? He won’t even give his mother one kidney. How could we ever trust someone so ungrateful to look after Penelope?”

I stared at them.

They were passing judgment on me as though I had committed some unforgivable sin just because they had not received an immediate reply.

In their eyes, ten years of sacrifice, my battered hands, and everything I had endured for them had not earned me even half an hour of patience.

They did not want a living, breathing son. They wanted an obedient spare part, always on call and ready to be sacrificed.

Just then, the old phone finally rang.

Its shrill ringtone echoed through the luxurious apartment.

Mom snorted. “It seems he has finally decided to call back! Let’s hear what excuse he has.”

She deliberately let it ring for several seconds before answering at a leisurely pace and putting the call on speaker.

She cleared her throat, ready to unleash all the lectures and accusations she had prepared.

“Hello? Bruno, so you finally decided to call back. Do you have any idea…”

The voice on the other end was not my usual meek reply.

It belonged to an unfamiliar man. It was trembling.

“Hello? Am I speaking to a member of Bruno Lawson’s family? I’m the HR manager at his company. I... I’m afraid I have terrible news.

“Bruno collapsed at his desk and began coughing up blood. He didn’t make it. Please come to the hospital as soon as possible.”

Many people attended my funeral. There were relatives I had once known, old friends, and business associates of the Lawson family. They stood near my grave, whispering among themselves.“He is dead? Didn’t they tell everyone he was studying abroad?”“I heard he worked himself to death.”“The Lawsons are really heartless. The moment their daughter was born, they stopped caring about their son.”Every whispered remark landed like a blow against Mom and Dad.Dressed in black, they stood beside my grave looking as though they had aged twenty years.Penelope stood nearby, bewildered. She could not understand why Mom and Dad had barely spoken to her for days. Nor could she understand why they were so devastated that the “bad brother” they had told her about was dead. After the funeral, our family fell apart completely. One by one, every illness they had invented to deceive me began to afflict them for real, as though their lies had become curses.Mom was the first. Not long af

The wardrobe was almost empty. It contained only two once-white T-shirts, now yellowed with age and stretched at the collars, and a pair of black work pants worn smooth and shiny from years of use. Those were my work clothes.Beside them hung a heavy coat, the only thing I owned to keep myself warm during winter.Dad took down the coat and ran his hands over it.It was covered in patches, each one held in place by uneven stitches. It was my own handiwork.I could not spare the money to have it professionally repaired, much less buy a new winter coat. “How... How can this be all he had?” Dad clutched the coat to his chest. He was sobbing so hard that he could barely stand. “I design clothes for a living, and my own son spent ten years wearing this.”Mom began searching through the desk drawers. She was desperate to find something, any small sign that I had experienced even a little happiness, to ease her guilt. There was nothing. The drawers contained only a thick stack of

“This is the son you called selfish and ungrateful?”The older officer’s voice boomed through the morgue.Mom took the phone with trembling hands and read the entries one by one, each one revealing another sacrifice I had made for them.“No!”A broken, anguished scream tore from her throat. She staggered backward and collapsed to the floor. She clutched her head as she sobbed uncontrollably. Her entire body convulsed with every ragged breath. She bit down so hard that blood soon appeared at the corner of her mouth.“I’m a monster! I have money! I’m worth billions! Why did I pretend we were poor? Why did I test him? Bruno, I had money! You didn’t have to die for me! I never needed your insurance money!”Dad stumbled toward the gurney and gripped its edge for support. He reached for my face but could not bring himself to touch it.“My son... My precious boy... I’m sorry. I never should’ve lied to you. The tests, the inheritance, none of it mattered! It was all bullshit! All of

The police cruiser sped toward the county medical examiner’s office, its siren wailing.Inside, the silence was deathly. My parents huddled in the corner. They were trembling as they muttered, “It can’t be true. There must be a mistake. He’s just trying to scare us.”They were still clinging desperately to their denial. The truth was, if they admitted that I was dead, then everything they had done to me over the past ten years in the name of teaching me a lesson would amount to murder. They arrived at the morgue.A wave of bone-chilling cold greeted them. The medical examiner was already waiting.“Are these his parents?” She was a young woman. She regarded them with the same mixture of contempt and disbelief. She approached the stainless-steel gurney and placed one hand on the corner of the white sheet. “Prepare yourselves.”In one swift motion, she pulled back the sheet.Beneath it lay a body so emaciated and ravaged that it scarcely looked human. That was me.Bruno La

The law firm was bustling with clients and staff.Mom and Dad were dressed head to toe in designer labels, carrying themselves with the smug arrogance of people convinced that justice was on their side. They marched straight into the estate attorney’s office and dropped the family trust documents onto his desk.“We want to amend the trust,” Mom said coldly. “Remove Bruno Lawson as a beneficiary.”The attorney examined the documents. “Bruno Lawson? Is he here? Under the terms of this trust, removing him requires his signed consent.”“He can’t come,” Dad replied with biting sarcasm. “He’s angry with us and far too busy pretending to be a corpse.”The attorney frowned, clearly missing the sarcasm. “He is dead? In that case, I’ll need a certified death certificate. His interest would be handled under the trust’s death provisions. You can’t simply remove him.”“There is no death certificate! He has simply decided that he doesn’t want us as parents anymore!” Mom tapped the desk impati
