Chapter 2

مؤلف: Tailwind
I was about to leave the apartment building when the neighboring metal door creaked open.

An old lady poked her head through the crack. She waved at me and whispered, "Are you the doctor who's treating Lydia? Is her illness acting up again?"

"Are you familiar with Mrs. Warner, ma'am?" I asked curiously.

"Yes, of course! We've been neighbors for decades, so we're very close. In fact, I watched her son, Jeremy, grow up from a boy to a man. He also always greets me when he sees me.

"They're good people. It's just that Lydia's been getting more and more senile in the last two years. It's honestly a tragedy that she can't even recognize her own husband and son anymore."

My eyes flashed. "Have Mr. Dean and Mr. Jeremy always looked like that?"

"Yes!" the old lady answered without any hesitation. "Their appearances have never changed. The neighbors would definitely notice if their faces changed.

"Lydia has always been a bit of a religious fanatic. Now that she's gotten older, she tells everyone she comes across that her husband and son are monsters. I suspect that she's losing her mind. You can't trust anything that she says, doctor!"

"Did you notice anything different about Mr. Dean's and Mr. Jeremy's habits or behaviors?" I asked.

The old lady frowned as she sifted through her memories.

"Lydia always told us about how Jeremy became terrified of the dark after he fell into an abandoned pit when he was a child. All of us know that he sleeps with a night light. He also keeps the lights in the hallway on throughout the night.

"He stopped turning on the lights in the hallway about a year and a half ago. Sometimes, I would even see him throwing trash in the middle of the night. He's not afraid of the stairwell anymore even though it's pitch-black. In fact, he has no problem at all traversing through the darkness.

"But he's in his 40s now. I suppose that it makes sense that he got over his fear of the dark."

I thanked the old lady for the information and rushed back to the hospital. I then searched the system for Jeremy's records.

Finally, I found an emergency room record that was filed with the pediatric department over three decades ago.

"Patient: Jeremy Warner.

Age: 7 years old.

Diagnosis: Suffered a panic attack and minor injuries after falling into an abandoned pit.

Treatment and Notes: Disinfected and bandaged the wounds. The patient has nyctophobia, which triggered his panic attack."

I mulled over my thoughts.

There was no way that Jeremy and Dean had doppelgangers who were also father and son. If they truly had been replaced, the police would have conducted an investigation after Lydia called them 99 times.

I also ruled out the possibility of Jeremy and Dean getting plastic surgery. Everyone who went under the knife wished to look more attractive and youthful. It didn't make sense for them to get plastic surgery just to look older.

However, I couldn't ignore the fact that Jeremy had nyctophobia. It was odd for him to suddenly conquer his fear when he showed no signs of getting better after decades of treatment.

Furthermore, Lydia was still very lucid. She was able to clearly express her thoughts, so it didn't seem like she was suffering from Alzheimer's disease.

I remained lost in my thoughts for a long time, but I still couldn't figure out what was going on.

Just then, I received a call from Jeremy.

He sounded panicked as he exclaimed, "Mom locked us out of the house, Dr. Simmons! She keeps accusing us of being monsters that want to hurt her. Please help us out.

"She's been acting like a madwoman. I'm worried that she'll kill all of us one day when she actually loses her mind."

I could hear Lydia's cries and curses on the other end of the line.

I made it back to the Warner residence about 20 minutes later.

Dean was sitting in the stairwell. His back was hunched, and he kept sighing.

Jeremy was standing by the door. His eyes lit up as if he had seen his savior when he spotted me.

"Hurry and tell Mom that she's going senile, Dr. Simmons. Tell her that she needs to be good and take her medication instead of stirring up trouble for us."

"Was your goal their fortune?" the officer asked sternly."Could there be any other reason?" Daniel asked while looking at the officer mockingly. "The house was about to be demolished soon. The compensation fee was in the millions of dollars! "Both Dean and I belonged to the Warner family. Both of us struggled all our lives. What gives him the right to live a comfortable life while I have to suffer? I don't see why I don't deserve to reclaim what rightfully belongs to me.""That's why you came up with the plan to drive Ms. Lydia Baldwin insane?"Daniel scoffed. "That old hag's too sharp for her own good. She was always looking at us suspiciously after we returned to her side. You can't imagine how annoying it was for her to be constantly questioning us about Jared's missing birthmark and why I suddenly started eating cilantro."Since she noticed that something was amiss with us, we decided to play along and make it seem like she was actually going insane."Daniel's eyes turned c

Jeremy's and Daniel's humiliation morphed into fury when they snapped back to their senses. Throwing all caution to the wind, they lunged at me again, trying to snatch my phone from me.Just then, the door slammed open with a deafening bang.Several armed police officers rushed into the room, shouting, "Freeze! It's the police! Put your hands on your head and get on the floor!"Daniel's and Jeremy's expressions turned ashen as they felt the strength drain from their bodies. Eventually, they caved to the immense pressure from the police, placing their hands on their heads and sinking to the floor.Daniel turned to glare at Francesca. "You! You ungrateful bitch! You worked together with Dr. Simmons to take us down!"Francesca's face turned as white as a sheet. She subconsciously cradled her stomach and mumbled, "I had no choice. I couldn't let my baby be born into this world with blood on his hands. We shouldn't continue down the wrong path!"The veteran officer swept his gaze over

I waved the folder that I was holding as I swept my gaze across Jeremy and Dean. Jeremy had gone deathly pale while Dean had a darkened look in his eyes."Will an allergy that has plagued someone for decades miraculously get better at the same time as their nyctophobia? Will it just disappear without a trace?" I asked."You have no idea what you're talking about!" Jeremy roared. "You're just spouting nonsense!"I looked away from him to gaze at Dean, who had remained silent the entire time."As for you, 'Mr. Dean Warner,'" I said, making sure to emphasize his name.I pulled out a copy of a black-and-white photo that had yellowed at the edges from the folder. It showed two identical men next to each other."According to my investigations, you do look exactly like Mrs. Warner's husband, Dean Warner. However, you're not actually Dean!"I pinned my piercing gaze on him."Dean actually had a twin named Daniel Warner. He was imprisoned multiple times in his youth for fraud and theft.

Dean's words made sense, perfectly explaining all the discrepancies that Lydia noticed. However, there was still something amiss with the entire situation.A few scenes flashed through my mind. The neighbor's confused expression when she mentioned that Jeremy was no longer afraid of the dark.Dean's and Jeremy's extreme reactions when I suggested that they get a DNA test. The way Francesca's eyes had flashed briefly when she handed the report over. The determination in Dean's eyes when he decided to tell the truth as well as how Jeremy's eyes had glimmered with shock. The pieces were falling into place too easily.I bent down and picked up the report. I stared at the results that were printed in bright red, stating that Lydia and Jeremy were not biologically related.I lifted my head and looked into Lydia's eyes that were full of hopelessness and self-doubt. "Perhaps your memory isn't failing you, Mrs. Warner," I said slowly. "Perhaps Jeremy and Dean aren't actually your son a

Just then, Dean suddenly removed his hands from his face. He hadn't shed any tears. He looked exhausted but determined. He looked up at Lydia before directing his gaze to me, sighing when he finally looked at Jeremy."I guess we can't hide the truth anymore now that the situation has escalated to this point."Jeremy whipped his head around to stare at him. His eyes were glimmering with shock when he exclaimed, "What nonsense are you spouting, Dad?"Lydia also stopped screaming and stared at Dean.I held my breath.Dean looked away from Jeremy to stare at Lydia. "You're not wrong, Lydia, but you're not completely right either," he said dryly. "It's true that Jeremy isn't your biological son.""What?" Lydia and I exclaimed in unison.Lydia stood rooted to the spot with widened eyes.Jeremy closed his eyes with a pained expression before he punched the wall.Dean slowly spoke in a low voice as if every word weighed a million pounds, "Everything started more than two decades ago

Just as the suffocating atmosphere in the apartment was about to reach its peak, Francesca returned with a sealed envelope. She rushed into the apartment and exclaimed, "Mom, Dad, the DNA test results are out!"Dean snatched the envelope from her. His hands were trembling slightly as he tore it open. He put on his reading glasses, his eyes widening in shock when he scanned the document. A hint of barely discernible panic flickered in his eyes.Lydia dug her nails into my arm as she stared at them."What's wrong? What do the results say?" I asked in a low voice.Dean didn't respond.Jeremy snatched the report from Dean. His face twisted before he whipped his head up to look at Francesca. His voice was hoarse when he asked, "What happened, Francesca? There must be something wrong with this report!"The color drained from Francesca's face as she stood by the door. She averted her gaze and murmured, "We went through the proper procedures with the samples that Dr. Simmons provided. Th
