Chapter 5: Mikayla’s Friend

“What? He must have lost his mind?” Rachel echoed what Mikayla had been thinking for the past few days. Davey must have lost his mind in agreeing to be with her in that status of a pet. And she must have lost her mind for offering him that role in the first place. All she wanted was to push him away. She didn’t think he would agree. But well, he did, and she couldn’t turn back on her words.

It was Mikayla’s day off today, and so she got a chance to visit her best friend, Rachel. The friend that had been with her through the thick and thin of her childhood, the only friend that knew her family, her trauma, her past, and the only friend whom she ever trusted. Rachel was from a wealthy family and was the star since middle school. She was still a star now with her celebrity status. It was not difficult since she had been the main protagonist of a few movies. Her big melancholic eyes had captivated the hearts of millions of men (and maybe the same for women), her long silky brunette hair gave her a sophisticated look, and the confident tone of her voice made her the siren that enchanted anyone that she spoke to. Rachel had always been the star of her life as well. Mikayla didn’t know what motivated Rachel to rescue her from the bullies back in middle school. Mikayla never had many friends. In fact, back in school, she didn’t have friends at all. She was that nerdy kid that sat in the front of the room and answered all the questions and found socializing too difficult to try. She stuck with her books. Her books were her only friends. And that was one of the reasons she got bullied often, she tried to brush it off, but they never stopped. Her pencil case got stolen, her locker got egged, and many more horrendous things happened… until Rachel came to the rescue. She put a stop to it all. Just walked between Mikayla and the bullies and threatened them with her jiu-jitsu skill and cheerleader status. To be honest, Mikayla was scared of her too. And that was when we became friends. Rachel was probably bored of her rich girls' crowd and wanted a serious study buddy, and she didn’t like bullies. So that was when Mikayla got her first friend, and we eventually became best friends. She was glad she had Rachel. Rachel was courageous, talented, confident, supportive, trustworthy, and everything she could have asked for in a friend. And that was why she was the first person Mikayla turned to in a time like this.

“What is this pet deal about? Is this some sort of a kink? Have you slept together? Do you know anything about his background? How can you make sure that he didn’t lie to you? Oh, and how did he willing to be a pet? Have you asked his reasoning?” Her celebrity friend asked her several questions with the speed of light, and Mikayla was slowly figuring out which question to answer first. It had been days that she lived with Davey like this, and she still couldn’t get used to the concept. She didn’t know his intention, and we just went with the flow somehow.

“Calm down, Rachel. We haven’t slept together. I didn’t think about being with him in that way. He lost all his memories and couldn’t even remember his name. So, a short answer is I don’t know. He seemed genuine enough, though.” Mikayla answered each question calmly. She was also still confused about how suddenly she was living with a young man that she barely knew and he barely knew himself. But she could tell her friend later that living with Davey gave her more peace of mind than she could ever expect. She started to think that maybe she didn’t have to find that much reason for anything, and although this relationship she had with Davey was unconventional, it didn’t hurt anyone.

“I offered him the deal to drive him away, but he liked that deal. That kid is weird, and although it was very unexpected, things seem to work out well for us. Actually, he isn’t that much of a kid. He couldn’t remember much, but Davey said he was sure he was older than 18. He mentioned a memory of him entering a club, so I guess being my pet is an informed decision by an adult.” Mikayla explained. She appeared a bit too nonchalant for Rachel’s liking.

“This is too strange, Mikayla! This is a human being you are taking n to live with you! And as a pet! Oh my gosh! I can’t fathom the fact that you already think this is something normal and acceptable!” Rachel’s beautiful face frowned. She was clearly in distress about this and clearly against this notion of a pet. But Rachel didn’t know what had happened to Mikayla’s life with Davey in the past few days and how much joy she was having. Rachel hadn’t known that yet. And so, of course, Rachel didn’t support her stance.

“Please, Rachel, I just ask for one thing. This might be a bit unconventional, but you will understand that the relationship works well between us. And in fact, I’m, in a way, helping him while he is recovering from this memory loss problem. He got a place to stay, and I….”

“You got a pet and a boy toy.” Rachel quickly added

“Just a pet! A platonic pet! No boy toy!”

“Yeah, whatever. You can keep telling yourself that, girl. Don’t forget that I have known you since we were 13. I know you well…” Rachel said warily.

“Pleaseee… just this one thing. There are already many stresses in my life. I just like being with him.” She confessed. There was nothing to the relationship. And if Rachel met Davey, Mikayla believed she would understand. He was just like a hyperactive little puppy… but in the form of a fully grown man.

“Whatever, Mikky. It’s your life. Just remember that if you have a problem, I’m always here. I just want to warn you, that’s all. Don’t get too attached to this kid.” Rachel used the nickname she named Mikayla since their teenage years.

“When you meet him, you will understand.” Davey had been her stress reliever for the past few days and the companion she didn’t know she was missing. She really hoped Rachel could understand her once she met Davey.

“Sure, let me meet this mysterious pet of yours.”

“Just visit my condo sometimes.”

“Sure, I’m quite free for a week before this new filming project kicks in. And is Davey home all day when you are out?”

“He went out a few hours per day. You know, just in case he saw something that triggered his memories or someone that might know him. He went to some random places. I don’t know much. But no clue just yet.” Mikayla explained. Then she remembered something and hurriedly looked at her watch.

“Oh no! I’m late! Wow, we have been talking for so long, and I lost track of time. Please excuse me, Rachel. I really need to go back home. I need to cook something for Davey. See you later.” Mikayla got up from the soft sofa she had been sitting on and looked for her handbag. She often visited Rachel’s luxurious home, and that was their place of hanging out of choice. It was better here than going out and risking having fans take pictures of Rachel or intentionally eavesdrop on their conversation. She didn’t want to potentially be on the news and drag Rachel down with it. Being friends with a celebrity has its perks and curse.

“Alright, see you. And how could you find a new guy if you keep spending time with this kid? I don’t think you like to be single for long. You are not the type.” Rachel was right. She didn’t like being too lonely alone. She was introverted, alright, but she liked dating.

“Nah, with all that happened, I already got a date, believe it or not. I will tell you about him later. I really need to go. I don’t want Davey to wait too long for supper.” She winked at Rachel, who was rolling her eyes.

After that last relationship, Mikayla knew she needed a rebound. She needed someone better than Matthew. Someone who was more successful than him, someone who was confident in his own success that hers wouldn’t threaten him. And in a short period of time, she found that man.
