Chapter 3

Author: Full Luck Mode
The trouble started on Ryan’s second day on the job.

The first call came from Brian Lynn, the CFO.

He sounded anxious.

“Natalie, where’s the authorization paperwork for that overseas transfer?”

I was eating fish and chips at a restaurant in Frostvik.

“Mr. Lynn, I’ve resigned.”

“I know, but this is urgent. If the money doesn’t arrive today, they’re pulling out of the deal.”

“Please speak to Mr. Hayden.”

“Ryan says he hasn’t seen the paperwork.”

“It’s in the sixth folder in the handover package, marked with a blue tag. The instructions are in there too.”

Brian sounded relieved.

I continued, “But I wouldn’t advise him to process it himself. That transfer needs secondary approval from Mr. Tohn personally.”

Brian hesitated. “Didn’t you always handle it before?”

“I was Mr. Tohn’s assistant then. I’m not anymore.”

I hung up.

Less than half an hour later, John Geller from Legal called.

“Natalie, there are two versions of the international conference minutes. Which one should we send to the partner company?”

“Shouldn’t Legal know that?”

“You always checked them before they went out.”

“Please have Mr. Hayden check them.”

John’s tone sharpened. “He can’t even read the contracts in their original language.”

“Get a translator then.”

“There’s no time!”

I set my phone aside.

The restaurant owner brought over a cup of hot chocolate.

“Trouble at work?” he asked.

I smiled. “Not my problem anymore.”

The third call came from Mr. Sade, Duncan’s driver.

“Ms. Ziegler, Mr. Tohn is going to the airport soon to meet some overseas guests. Mr. Hayden has double-booked the car, and the interpreter is at another venue. Could you help me sort this out?”

Mr. Sade had been driving for Duncan for over a decade and had always treated me well.

I did not make things difficult for him.

“Mr. Sade, send the details to Mr. Hayden. Tell him to arrange another car using the backup plan.”

“Where’s the backup plan?”

“In the handover files.”

“But he...” Mr. Sade sighed.

I knew what he was going to say.

Ryan had no idea what to do.

However, that was not my problem.

That afternoon, there was an emergency at the Tohn family estate.

George suddenly developed tightness in his chest and was rushed to the hospital.

Unable to reach Duncan, Dr. McCrae called the CEO’s office.

Unfortunately, Ryan was out helping Morgan choose an evening gown.

The first thing Morgan said when she answered was, “Why is the hospital calling Duncan? Call the butler. That’s his job.”

Mr. Bach, the butler, sounded so panicked that he was practically yelling.

“Ms. Eddy, the hospital needs Mr. Tohn to authorize Mr. George’s emergency treatment!”

Morgan snapped impatiently, “Just let me sign for him!”

“You’re not authorized to do that. Where’s Natalie?”

By the time Morgan reached me, she was furious.

“What are you trying to prove, Natalie? George is in the hospital. Why aren’t you back here taking care of this?”

I leaned back on the hotel couch.

“Ms. Eddy, I no longer work there.”

“But you always cared so much about George!”

“Caring about him doesn’t mean I still work for you.”

“How can you be so cold?”

I laughed at that.

“You didn’t seem too worried about that when you fired me.”

Morgan had no answer.

After a moment, she said through gritted teeth, “Then, at least tell me what information Dr. McCrae needs.”

“It’s in the handover package.”

“There’s too much in there. I can’t find it!”

“Then, keep looking.”

“Natalie!”

“Ms. Eddy, I had to figure it out myself when I started, too.”

The other end of the line went completely silent.

That evening, Duncan finally called.

I watched the screen glow for a long while before answering.

His voice was low and stern.

“Natalie, tell Ryan what he needs to deal with first.”

“Mr. Tohn, I no longer work there.”

“Stop playing games.”

I gave a small laugh. “I’m not playing games.”

“Everything is a mess here.”

“How is that my problem?”

There was a catch in his breathing on the other end.

Duncan lowered his voice. “You worked for me for three years.”

“Yes. Three years. You’re right. But I don’t work for you anymore.”

After a brief silence, he said, “You’ve changed, Natalie.”

I looked out the window.

The northern lights drifted across the night sky, silent and dreamlike.

“I haven’t changed. I’ve just finally learned that quitting means the job isn’t my problem anymore.”

I hung up and headed out onto the snowfields with the northern lights tour group.

The man from Mapleward traveling with us was called Alan. He had blond hair and a bright smile.

“Did you just say no to your old boss?” he asked.

I nodded.

He gave me a thumbs-up.

“Well done.”

I looked at the lights in the distance and agreed with him in silence.

I sat by the hotel window and sipped tea.“What about Ryan?”“He ran. He bought a ticket and flew abroad yesterday. But the company has already sent him a legal notice. He won’t get away with it.”“Oh.”“There’s also the board,” Mr. Sade said, lowering his voice. “They were already unhappy with Mr. Tohn. Now they want someone held accountable for this mess. I hear they’re trying to force him out.”I paused, cup in hand. “Force him out?”“Yes. They’re blaming his poor management and favoritism for what’s happened to the company. Mr. Lynn’s holding them off, but he can’t do it for much longer.”I fell silent. If the board forced Duncan out, Tohn Corp really would be finished.Still, what did that have to do with me?Duncan had chosen his girlfriend and his assistant himself. He had made the decisions. The consequences were his to deal with.“Ms. Ziegler, you... You really aren’t coming back?”“No.”“Even if Mr. Tohn—”“Mr. Sade,” I said, interrupting, “he’s an adult. He’s

“Ms. Ziegler, are you really not coming back?”“No.”“Then, what about Mr. Tohn...”“If he wants to stay, let him.”Mr. Sade sighed on the other end of the line.“This may not be my place, Ms. Ziegler, but the way Mr. Tohn has treated you these past three years...”“Mr. Sade,” I said, interrupting.“You’ve worked for him for over a decade. Tell me, in those three years, did I ever have a life of my own?”Mr. Sade fell silent. It was a long time before he answered, “No.”“Then, why do you think I’d go back?”“I understand.”After the call, I sat on a park bench and watched the leaves drift down. The wind was chilly. I pulled my coat tighter around me.My phone rang again. This time, it was Lauren.“Natalie, Morgan... She’s hired a lawyer. She’s suing you for defamation.”I sneered. “Suing me?”“Yes! She said you’ve been spreading rumors about her and Ryan online. But she actually did those things!”“Does she have any evidence?”“Sh-She’s making it up. She just wants

His lips moved.“Do you have to do this, Natalie?”“Do what?”“After three years...”“Three years of working for you,” I said, cutting in. “Mr. Tohn, don’t tell me you still think I have feelings for you.”He looked at me sharply. As I looked him in the eye, I said in a deliberate tone to make myself clear, “I was doing my job. You paid me. Don’t flatter yourself.”All the color drained from his face.I turned and headed for the door.He called after me, “Natalie!”I kept walking.“Morgan’s trashing you online! She’s trying to ruin you!”I paused. Then, I looked back and smiled.“She can say what she likes. I’ll get on with my life. If she thinks a few nasty posts can ruin me, she has seriously underestimated me.”I pushed open the cafe door and stepped outside. The bell jingled behind me.I did not look back. That evening, I was packing at the hotel when the doorbell rang.I thought it was Alan. When I opened the door, I saw that it was Duncan. He stood there, wet f

He looked at me and swallowed.“I’ve had PR take down everything Morgan put out.”“Oh.”“This is my fault. I never thought she’d...”“Mr. Tohn,” I said, interrupting, “are you here just to tell me that?”He fell silent.Soft music played in the cafe. Pigeons flew past the window. He took a long time to answer.“No.”“Then, why are you here?”“I want you to come back.”I smiled. “Do you really think I’d come back, Mr. Tohn?”“I know I was wrong.”“What did you do wrong?”He looked taken aback.I held his gaze and kept my voice calm. “Go on, Duncan. Tell me what you did wrong.”He opened his mouth, but nothing came out.I picked up my coffee and took a sip.“You don’t know what you did wrong, do you? You never have.”He went pale.“Natalie, I...”“You only know the company’s a mess without me and that Ryan can’t do my job. “You’ve noticed that there’s no one to bring you your stomach medication, organize your schedule, or remember George’s checkups. But you’ve neve

After I hung up, Alan asked, “Is it over?”I nodded. He smiled and left it at that.We stayed late at a little bar in Mapleward. Outside, a light rain was falling. The dim yellow streetlights illuminated the raindrops.I took a sip of red wine. Then, I suddenly felt like the past three years had been one long dream. In that dream, I answered messages at 3 a.m. and took calls at 7 a.m. If Duncan had an upset stomach, I had his medication at the office within half an hour. When George missed the tea from back home, I arranged for some to be sent from Osterreach. When Morgan wanted dessert from a shop on the south side of town, I made a detour of over twelve miles after work to pick it up.Everyone believed it was my job. No one ever asked if I was tired.By the time Alan walked me back to my hotel, the rain had stopped. He hesitated in the doorway.“You’re a good person, Nat.”I smiled. “Thank you.”“That guy doesn’t deserve you.”I said nothing. He turned and left.I

On my second day in Mapleward, Brian contacted me again. This time, he made a video call.On the screen, he had dark circles under his eyes and a crooked tie. He looked as though he had not slept in days.“Natalie, the overseas account has been frozen.”“Oh.”“This is serious! They say the authorization chain is incomplete. If we don’t get them the missing paperwork by this afternoon, the acquisition will fall through.”I took a sip of coffee.“Mr. Lynn, you’re talking to the wrong person.”“Just tell me where the supplementary authorization is.”“I don’t remember.”“How can you not remember?”“Well, that’s because I’m on vacation.”Brian took a deep breath.“Natalie, the company’s willing to negotiate. Come back and help us.”“Mr. Lynn, you should ask the company who signed off on letting me go first.”He fell silent. The day Morgan used Duncan’s written authorization to force me out, Brian had been in a meeting next door. There was no way he had not known.Like ever
