CHAPTER 6:

The rain had cleared by Tuesday evening, leaving the city streets slick and mirroring the amber glow of streetlamps. Inside Adrian’s apartment, however, the world felt entirely sealed off from reality. No ticking clocks, no campus security guards, no ticking academic deadlines. Just the heavy, rhythmic scratch of a fountain pen and the suffocating tension of two people trying very hard to pretend they were doing nothing more than studying.

I sat at his massive executive desk, wearing one of his oversized black cotton hoodies that swallowed my frame, the sleeves rolled up past my wrists. My bare legs were curled underneath me on the leather chair. Spread out across the mahogany wood were four distinct modules of advanced calculus equations, each one covered in red corrections that looked less like academic feedback and more like a battle map.

Across the desk, Adrian sat in his leather armchair, a thick financial risk assessment dossier open in his lap. But he wasn’t reading it.

His glasses rested on the desk beside a half-empty glass of amber whiskey, and his grey eyes were fixed entirely on me. He hadn't turned a page in twenty minutes.

“You’re staring,” I murmured, not looking up from my paper as I tried to balance a third-order derivative.

“I’m evaluating your focus,” he corrected smoothly, his voice deep and resonant in the quiet room.

“Is that what you call it?” I glanced up, holding his gaze. The soft amber light from the desk lamp carved shadows across the sharp angles of his face, accentuating the faint stubble along his jawline. Since the night in the lecture hall, something fundamental had shifted between us. The frantic, desperate edge of our early encounters had evolved into something much more dangerous: a quiet, domestic rhythm wrapped in absolute transgression.

“If your focus were entirely on the page,” Adrian noted, standing up slowly and setting his dossier aside, “you wouldn't have spent the last five minutes trying to solve an identity using the wrong theorem.”

He walked around the desk, his heavy leather-soled shoes making no sound against the thick Persian rug. He stopped right beside my chair, leaning his hip against the corner of the wood. The clean, woody scent of cedar and expensive soap drifted over me, instantly making my pulse spike.

“Where did I go wrong?” I asked, leaning back against the leather chair and tilting my head up to look at him.

Adrian reached over, his long, warm fingers gently taking the pen from my hand. He didn't point at the paper. Instead, his knuckles grazed the back of my hand, sending a sudden tremor up my arm.

“Here,” he whispered, his eyes dropping to my mouth before rising back to meet my gaze. “You’re rushing the middle steps. You want to get to the conclusion too quickly because you’re anticipating what comes after.”

“And what comes after?” I challenged softly, letting my legs uncurl and sliding my chair an inch closer to his body.

Adrian didn’t answer with words. He reached out, his hand sliding up the back of my neck, his thumb resting gently against the sensitive skin right beneath my jaw. His touch was sure, steady, and entirely possessive.

“Patience, Maya,” he murmured, his voice dropping into that low, gravelly register that always made my breath catch. “We have all night. Your mother thinks you’re studying at the campus annex until ten.”

“She’s starting to ask questions about why you require so many off-campus sessions,” I admitted, leaning slightly into his palm, drinking in the warmth of his skin.

A dark, dangerous flicker crossed Adrian’s eyes. His thumb stroked my jawline. “Let her ask. I provided a formal progress report this morning. Your projected score has jumped twenty-five percent in three weeks. No one questions a tutor who delivers results.”

“Even when those results involve completely ignoring the curriculum?”

“We aren't ignoring it,” he said, his lips parting in a faint, rare smile that transformed his entire expression from severe academic to something devastatingly intimate. “We’re merely... optimizing your learning environment.”

He set the pen down on the desk with a soft *clack*. In one fluid motion, he hooked his arm behind my knees and lifted me straight out of the chair, settling me onto the polished surface of the executive desk right on top of my calculus papers.

Papers crinkled beneath me, equations scattered into the margins, but neither of us spared them a single glance.

Adrian stepped between my thighs, his broad shoulders shielding me from the rest of the room as he placed both hands flat on the wood on either side of my hips, trapping me in his space. His chest pressed against mine, the thick cotton of his shirt rubbing against the fabric of his hoodie.

“Adrian,” I breathed, my hands automatically rising to grip his shoulders, feeling the solid, heavy muscle beneath his clothes.

“You wanted a deep focus session,” he murmured, his mouth hovering a fraction of an inch from mine, his breath hot against my lips. “Let’s see how well you concentrate when I take every single thought out of your head.”

He didn't give me time to reply. His lips came down on mine with a slow, deliberate hunger that was infinitely more devastating than any rush. It wasn't the frantic panic of the lecture hall or the sudden explosion of the first night in my mother's study. This was deliberate. This was a man claiming territory he knew was entirely his.

His tongue parted my lips, tasting me slowly, thoroughly, as his hands slid up from my hips, tracing the curves of my waist before bunching up the heavy fabric of the hoodie. He pushed the material up, his rough, warm palms pressing directly against the bare skin of my ribs, mapping the line of my body with an expertise that made my head spin.

A soft gasp escaped into his mouth, and Adrian used the moment to deepen the kiss, his grip tightening as he lifted me slightly, settling me closer against the hard, unyielding line of his hips.

The contrast between the cold academic desk beneath me and the scorching heat of his body made every nerve ending hum with electricity. I wrapped my legs around his waist, my heels locking behind his lower back, pulling him so hard against me that there wasn't a millimeter of air left between us.

Adrian groaned into my throat, his mouth abandoning my lips to trail hot, open-mouthed kisses down my jawline, over my pulse point, and into the hollow of my neck. His teeth grazed softly against the sensitive skin there, making my hips arch off the wood on instinct.

“Look at me,” he commanded softly, pulling back just enough to look down into my eyes. His grey gaze was dark, heavy, and completely stripped of any professional distance. “Tell me what you’re thinking about, Maya. Are you thinking about calculus?”

I let out a breathless, wet laugh, my fingers tangling in the thick hair at the nape of his neck. “I don't even know what numbers look like anymore.”

“Good,” he rasped, a dark satisfaction curling the corners of his mouth.

His large hand slid down my stomach, his fingers dipping beneath the waistband of my shorts, tracing a slow, agonizing circle over my skin that made my entire body shudder violently. The room around us faded away until there was nothing left in the universe except the sound of his ragged breathing, the friction of our skin, and the steady, unbreakable anchor of his gaze.

He didn't rush. He unbuttoned his shirt with one hand, letting the fabric fall open against his chest, exposing the hard plane of his torso to the cool air of the room before pressing his skin flush against mine. The friction of our chests touching sent a blinding jolt of pleasure straight through my core.

“Adrian, please,” I whispered, my fingers digging into his broad shoulders, holding onto him as if he were the only solid thing in a world that was spinning entirely out of control.

“I’m right here,” he murmured against my mouth, his voice thick with a low, possessive authority. “I’m not going anywhere.”

When he shifted, parting my thighs further to press between them, every thought, every lingering fear of discovery, every ounce of academic pressure vanished completely. He entered me with a slow, deep stroke that made a sharp, broken sob tear from my throat.

Adrian caught the sound with his mouth, swallowing it as he began to move.

It was a rhythm born of absolute control and desperate need. Every slow, deliberate push of his hips brought a wave of intense, blinding heat that built like a tidal wave inside my chest. He kept his eyes locked on mine the entire time, forcing me to bear witness to the raw, unmasked intensity of his desire for me.

The desk beneath us creaked in rhythm with his strokes. Papers slid off the edge, floating down to settle silently onto the Persian rug below, but neither of us spared them a glance. We were locked in our own orbit, two people destroying every boundary that had been set up to keep us apart.

The tension mounted rapidly, climbing higher with every deep, relentless pull until the edges of my vision began to blur.

“Adrian—I’m—,” I gasped out, my hands flying up to grip his forearms as my body began to coil inward, tightening around him.

“Take it,” he rasped, his voice breaking as his own control began to shatter. “Take it all, Maya.”

The release hit me like lightning, a shattering, violent wave of pleasure that ripped through my nerves and made my entire body lock up against him. Hearing my cry, Adrian let go of his last remaining restraint, burying his face in the crook of my neck as he drove deep one final time, his entire frame shuddering violently as he followed me over the edge into the dark, silent vacuum of our shared climax.

For a long time afterward, the room remained entirely still.

The amber lamp cast long, soft shadows across the disheveled desk, the scattered papers, and the two of us tangled together in the quiet sanctuary of the apartment. Adrian didn't pull away. He kept his weight supported on his arms, his chest heaving against mine, his forehead resting gently against my temple.

Slowly, his breathing began to steady. He pressed a long, lingering kiss to my cheek, his lips soft and warm against my skin.

“Your calculus test is next Tuesday,” he murmured quietly into the silence of the room, his voice still thick with the aftermath.

I smiled against his shoulder, my fingers lazily tracing the warm line of his spine. “Then you better make sure I pass.”

Adrian pulled back just enough to look down at me, a slow, undeniable warmth breaking through the cool exterior he wore for the rest of the world. “Oh, you’ll pass, Maya. I’ll make damn sure of it.”

CHAPTER 13The shift from being a student desperate for a passing mark to a junior honors researcher on the third floor of the mathematics building felt less like a promotion and more like stepping onto a higher tightrope.By five-fifteen, the autumn sun had completely abandoned the high arching windows of the central research archives, casting the long rows of mahogany tables in cold, indigo shadows. The room smelled of old binding leather, ozone, and the faint, lingering warmth of the ancient radiator rattling in the corner.I sat at a long oak table in the faculty reserve section, my dark blazer draped over the back of my chair. CHAPTER 12The transition from student to scholar was supposed to be marked by a formal letter bearing the crest of the university board. For Maya, it was marked by the key card to the third-floor research archives—and the quiet, claustrophobic reality of sharing an academic wing with Adrian on equal ground. It was nine o'clock on Monday morning. The long corridors of the mathematics wing smelled of floor wax, old parchment, and the sharp, ozone tang of autumn air leaking through high transom windows.I stood at the tall oak pod at the back of Lecture Hall C, arranging my lecture notes for the undergraduate statistics seminar. CHAPTER 10: By Tuesday night, the autumn air had turned sharp and brittle, carrying the metallic tang of impending frost. In the private study of the Lin residence, the silence was different than before. It was no longer the quiet of two people hiding behind the pretense of trigonometry. The pretense was dead. In its place remained an accounting—a cold, meticulous tally of every boundary crossed and every line erased.I sat behind my mother’s polished mahogany desk, her high-backed leather chair supporting my spine as I checked the final pages of Maya’s comprehensive diagnostic exam.Across from me, Maya sat on the edge of the chaise lounge, her knees drawn up to her chest, her dark hair falling loose over her shoulders. In a lecture hall, an emotional display was a failure of authority. For twenty-seven years, my life had been an exercise in perfect, cold architectural balance: precise equations, immaculate suits, and an unassailable reputation within the department. And then Maya Lin had looked at me across a kitchen island with two years of failure in her eyes and told me I didn't know anything about her.I sat at my mahogany desk in my private office on the fifth floor of the university annex.
