Chapter 42

Duiane's POV

Another letter.

Dave left it on the edge of my desk with the kind of caution one would give a viper in a box.

I didn't open it immediately. I just stared at it, the familiar seal, Alpha Shane's crest. The audacity. The sheer gall of the man to keep writing as if we were friends, comrades, or close enough to exchange pleasantries.

I was still in my office, the morning sun bleeding gradually through the windows behind me, casting shadows of golden dim streaks on the marble floor.

I leaned back in my chair and, finally, grasped the letter. It was sealed properly, it was thicker than the last one, and that indicated that there were probably more words, more desperation.

Dave walked. "Are you going to open it Alpha?"

I nodded my head. "No need. He never says anything else."

Frankly speaking, I didn't need to read it. The content of the letter was as bland as it was infuriating. 'Please inform me if you have seen my daughter.' 'I am willing to reward any news of he

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 41

Chapter 41Lessie's POVI'd just managed to catch my breath and turned around and watch Lena and her group of friends walking past the corridor when a low, smooth voice startled me."That was a good one.""That was a big speech."My stomach tightened. I hadn't had time to face around before it felt like he'd come up behind me. I tensed up.Alpha Duiane was standing there with his body leaning against the stone archway."I didn't figure you'd defend yourself like that," he said, his voice low but with a hint of something I couldn't quite identify.I stood up straight and inhaled deeply. "I did nothing wrong," I said to him."Saw and heard Lena and her group of friends pinning you down?"I stood up a little straighter. "Yeah, she and her little gang. But I handled it."He had a smile on his face but it was more of a grin. His smile, I never did determine if it made him more human or deadlier."I didn't know a spoiled princess could do that." He said."Don't call me that," I said too

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 40

Chapter 40Lessie's POVThe atmosphere between Trent and me after that heart to heart conversation, left me feeling like there was still something unspoken between us. His words kept lingering in my head? "She's not my mate but I care about her."I did not wish to ask him additional questions or dig deeper to find out who the person was. I could already sense where he was going with the conversation and it was somewhere I did not wish to go. "I should go back to class," I said to him, cutting off whatever it was that was going on in our heads. "I don't want to be late for class again."Trent nodded and grinned softly at. "Sure, I should go to mine too. See you later?" he asked."Yeah," I said, giving him a small smile before I left. I walked quickly, not just because I did not want to be late, but because my head was spinning . I liked Trent. He has always been a friend since I got here. But the idea that he had secret feelings for someone he could never have? That twis

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 39

Chapter 39Lessie's POVI stopped in my tracks as I heard him call out my name. Has he been waiting for me?I walked towards him. "Were you waiting for me?" I askedHe leaned against the railing. "Yeah. I thought you’d get here earlier.""I was here early," I said, "but I forgot something, so I went back home to get it."I gave him a side-eye. "And have you been stalking me?" I asked. "Guilty," he grinned. "But not like, stalker-wannabe. You're my friend, Kayla. When something's not right, I see it."I nodded, having no idea how to respond to what he said.As we both walked across the central courtyard to our respective classes, I felt it, a chill down the nape of my neck.I instinctively looked around and saw Lena. But she was way at the far end of the courtyard, across from the doors of the east wing, surrounded by two of her ever-present friends. Her eyes were on me. No, they were both on Trent and me. Her face was cold and it looked like she could murder someone.I blinked.D

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 38

Chapter 38Lessie's POVI slammed the door close behind me as soon as I saw what I'd walked into.My hands flew up to my face. "Oh..Moon Goddess! Cover yourself up!"From across the room, Alpha Duiane's deep voice was unacceptably calm. "You walked in here. Without knocking."I kept my face turned toward the door, my eyes closed tightly. "I came in here because it's an emergency!"He didn’t say anything for a moment. Then I heard a sigh. "You can turn around now." He said. I turned slowly to face him, my hand still covering my face, just in case. Fortunately, he'd wrapped a black robe around his body to cover himself. He didn’t look embarrassed that I had walked in on him, though. If anything, he looked pleased with what I had seen.I tried not to look at him. My heart was racing for the wrong reasons. Or the right reasons. I couldn't tell anymore."Are you okay?" he asked, walking towards his bed and sitting on the side of his bed."No, I’m not fine” I said, pulling out the fo

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 37

Chapter 37Lessie's POVMy mornings started slowly. A slow stretch, a deep breath, a hesitation before the day began, just like an empty canvas I could fill. But ever since that night at the dining, everything seemed to be more outlined. My heart pounds to every little sound to every meeting and to every look as if it was filled with meaning.I never imagined peace would be like this, it felt gentle and calm. The days moved faster than I expected, each of them lugging its feet with an odd stillness inside the royal house. It had been over a week since dinner that evening. Since I saw Alpha Duiane rip the heart from a man's chest as if it was nothing. Since I sat beside him at the table and heard his calculated justification of it.But what shocked me more than the blood or the fear, was how he changed after that night. He was more nicer. Uncomfortably nice.He even smiled once, it was random, off his usual self and it unnerved me.Was it pity? Tactic? Something else? I asked
