He was my professor, the Alpha of the Silver Crest Pack. Feared by every wolf on campus. In class, he was a sucker for rules, but outside, he was the kind of savage who obeyed no one. Especially not the Moon Goddess. I ran to this University to escape and arranged marriage, find freedom and my true mate. I wasn't expecting him, and I definitely wasn't expecting to snap at the one man who could order my head served on a platter to him. Then I realized he was mine. Mine to own, my mate! But he was the same man who helped destroy my family and Pack. The same Alpha who had murdered my brother without a second thought. The rules said we couldn't touch. I wouldn't reject me, I couldn't resist gin and every time another man looked at me, his wolf edged closer to savage. Sleeping with him would ruin everything. So why did I want it so badly? He was my curse, my punishment, and my aching obsession.

Lessie's Standpoint.
My heart pounded so hard I thought it might burst through my chest. The moon shone bright above me, like the Moon Goddess was mocking me in my helplessness.
Each breath burned in my lungs, but I couldn't stop. This was the price for freedom.
“Princess Lessie!” An angry voice called somewhere behind me. “Your father demands your return!”
I pushed hard, my wolf, Alexa, urging me to run faster. “Faster, Lessie. They are getting closer, I can smell them.”
My long brunette hair whipped behind me as I dodged between trees and leaping over fallen trees. For nineteen years of my life, I had been the perfect Princess of Wales Moon Pack, doing everything my father commanded. Nineteen years of “yes, father” and elegant dresses and proper etiquette.
And for what? To be handed over like property to some Alpha I've never met? To someone I don't love?
“I won't go back,” I whispered to myself as I ran, the words fueling the rage in me more. “I won't go back!”
The border of our Pack came into view, it was only a few blocks away. Once I crossed it, I would be beyond my father's immediate reach.
Of course, being Alpha Shane's only child meant he wouldn't give up on me easily, but I needed time to disappear, to build a new life where I could find my true mate.
The howls and screams behind me grew more distant as I ran towards the border. My father's warriors were strong, but I was faster. I had always been faster, though few knew it. A Princess wasn't supposed to outrun her guards during training sessions.
I crossed the border at a sprint speed, and an unfamiliar feeling washed over me as I left my home Pack. For the first time in my life, I was truly alone, terrified and tired.
No maids to call or guards to yell at. It was just me.
I slowed to catch my breath, resting against a thick oak tree. My dress was torn at the hem, my feet were dirty and scraped. I had left with nothing but the clothes in my backpack and the small pouch of valuables hidden in it.
“We did it,” I whispered to Alexa with a half smile, her happiness mingling with mine. “Now, we just have to find our true mate.”
Finding my fated mate has been my dream since childhood. I had grown up on stories of that perfect connection, that moment when the world stops and stares for a while when two souls recognize each other. My dad called it a foolish fantasy, I called it my destiny.
I dipped my hand into my side pocket and brought out a small leather pouch. It contained some money, a diamond necklace that had belonged to my mom and a fake identity card I got last week.
I opened the card and my fingers crapped over the new name. According to the Identity card, I was now Kayla Green.
I thought of my dad's face when he told me of my engagement to Alpha Noah of Blue Nicoline Pack. His eyes were cold and distant, just as they had been over the years, and his voice echoed sternly, leaving no room for my opinion.
“You'll marry Alpha Noah next month,” He said while we were at the dining table, chewing his meal gently. He didn't even spare me a glance. I guess that was how much of a coward he was.
I barely had time to process his words, but he continued. “Your marriage to him will form an alliance that will strengthen our position.”
Our position? I let out a disbelieving scoff at the thought. This was about him, about his position as the Alpha.
“But father,” I pleaded as I looked at him, hoping he would look at me too. “I haven't even met him! What about finding my true mate?”
He slowly lifted his gaze from the meal with a brow raised, before he let out harsh laughter that echoed in the room.
“True mate? And what would that do for you? Would that make our Pack whole again? Return it to what it used to be?” The laughter on his face faded completely, and he chewed the meat in his mouth with rage that made me clutch to my dress.
“And even if you get one, duty comes first. Always! The Pack survived a coup fourteen years ago. We lost your brother, and I won't let sentimentality weaken us again.”
I saw the pain that flashed across his face as he mentioned my brother. His death during the coup, as his only heir, had changed my dad, left him damaged. But it also changed my view of life.
Life is too precious and too fragile to waste it on things I didn't want.
So, I nodded, played the obedient daughter and planned my escape.
I walked further into the Pack with my hands clutching my fake identity card and the address of my destination; Silver Crest University. It was the perfect place for me to find my true mate…
I halted in my steps as my dad's words echoed in my ears. “True mate are fantasy… Fantasy that would never become reality.”
“What if he was saying the truth, Alexa? What if we can't find our mate?” My voice was barely above a whisper, tired.
“Then you'd get a fair trial to fall in love with someone you know, not just being thrown off like a bargaining chip.”
The Pack was nothing like the Wales Moon Pack, the Silver Crest Pack was artistic and beautiful that I stopped to stare around. Everyone went about their businesses without a fuss. Nobody bowed as I passed, and no one looked at me twice.
“This is awesome,” I screamed, a part of me seeking for an attention I didn't get.
As I stood in front of the Silver Crest University, squeezed my eyes shut for a moment and took in a deep breath as the cold morning breeze hit my face.
“It's breathtaking, isn't it?” An excited voice whispered close to my ear, startling me as I pulled back to the present.
“Who are you?” I snapped at him, my lips curled in disgust and my voice clouded with rage. Being a spoiled princess made me that way.
Rather than getting angry at me, the boy standing in front of me stared for a second before smiling.
“Relax,” he laughed and shifted his gaze to the school building. “You're nervous. You must be a new student.”
“Transfer student,” I lied smoothly and quickened my steps, but the boy followed me.
“I'm Trent, by the way. I just moved in from the Red Moon Pack, you?”
I stopped abruptly and turned to him, realizing I wasn't prepared for the question. “Oh… I'm from… far away. Just a small Pack, nothing interesting.” I said and continued walking.
He shot me a curious look but followed me. “Well, Silver Crest is a good school. Tough Alpha running it, though. My cousin says professor Duaine is a real hardass.”
“Professor Duaine?” My curiosity got piqued.
“Yes, Alpha Duaine Bert. He teaches at the university, despite being the Alpha of the Pack. It had been that way for like fifteen years.”
An odd chill ran down my spine around the name. “What is he like?”
Trent shrugged. “I'm also new here, I've never met him personally. My cousin says he's brilliant but strict. He's totally devoted to the Pack. Word is he helped build Silver Crest from practically nothing after some big Pack war years back.”
Chapter 159Lessie's POVI was sad. But why?The question burrowed in my chest, a weight that fluttered on the wings of a bird awakened in a nest. Alpha Duaine's words lingered in my mind, each syllable heavy as though it would not be wiped away. He had said it, openly and without shame, to killing a life, no, to having killed many lives, not all of them on the field. He had killed because he was ambitious, because he did not want to appear weak, because he wished to appropriate to himself what he thought was his own. I could not express the torrent of feeling within me. Disappointment, naturally, but confusion, and sadness, and a curious kind of pity which eluded me. Before he was a gentle lover and, in some manner that didn't make sense to me, a figure in my life, someone I relied upon, someone who instructed me. He was the kind of Alpha who fought wars and never even flinched at violence. The kind of Alpha who would murder to get what he wants and then sit up straight on the thr
Chapter 158Author's POVIt was a chilly and miserably cold night.Outside, the winds whistled softly, shaking the palace room windows, as the heavy shroud of cloud hid the moon. The fire had dwindled to reluctantly orange embers and the wall shadows flickered weakly.Lessie and Duaine were sprawled out on the bed but worlds apart in spirit. She lay on her back, gazing up at the ceiling as if searching for hidden stars. He was curled over beside her, his broad shoulders against the wall, his face toward the opposite end of the room. His breathing was even, but not the kind of man that was sleeping, it was deep, the kind brought on only by big thoughts. She could feel it.Something was gnawing at his mind. For days she had noticed the way his eyes stayed a little too long on nothing in particular, or the way he would scrunch up his lips and pull them in tight as if biting back words. He smiled less, laughed less. And now that their silence burst between them, Lessie's heart ached for
Chapter 157Duaine's POVI was where I could see her.Lessie was out in the courtyard, near the flower bed that had begun to bloom again since the rains. She was speaking with her maid, I could hardly hear what she was saying but easily imagine. The movement of her lips, the sparkle in her eyes when she smiled, it tightened my chest. She was smiling. Really smiling. Her happiness was a light that seemed to light even the most shadowed corners, here. She tipped her head to one side as her maid said something witty, and her laughter, though I was distant was distinct enough that my heart tightened with pleasure and pain. She was so beautiful. So free. What if I am the very reason for her losing that joy?The idea gnawed deep within me, would not release. For I had had the truth.I'd murdered her brother. And she, innocent, sweet, naive Lessie had no clue. She'd smiled at me, leaned on me, allowed me through the gates of her heart, and she'd had no clue that the son of her father's pac
Chapter 156Lessie's POV"Aden," I cut him off harshly, stopping him once more from another frantic bid for escape. My voice was harsher than I'd intended. "You're lying to me."He stilled, the muscles along the line of his shoulders contracting into a hard knot under his skin as if it hurt him that he'd spoken them. He turned to look at me again, reluctantly, his face a cloak of assumed innocence."I am not lying to you, my lady," he answered in reluctant guarded voice.I glared. "You don't think you're going to get under my skin, Aden. I've been looking for you on pack grounds, training grounds, stables, even kitchen staff for two days, and no one's seen you since yesterday. And you think I'm going to believe you've been 'training' the entire time?"His face turned rosy bright. His eyes dropped, his fists unclenching over his ribcage. "I didn't mean"I was breathing hard then urged him again. "I'll only ask you once, Aden. Once. Where were you?"There was a charge between us, thick
Chapter 155Lessie's POVIt has been two days since I hadn't heard from Aden.I blamed myself first. Guards were kept busy on their hands by assigned tasks to them. They rotated shifts, trained one another, or ran errands for commanding officers. But Aden was no ordinary guard, he is my guard. He ought to be with me, or at call-distance away at least when I needed him. His disappearance was already making me bite my lips.By the second morning, I couldn't get over it. I paced my room wildly, tugging on the curtain and looking out at the courtyard below as if he somehow would appear among the men striding. But he didn't.My maid was folding freshly laundered linens when I turned to confront her in a flash. "Have you seen Aden today?" I asked. She looked up, her eyes snapping with alarm at the stiffness of my voice. "No, my lady. I have not laid eyes upon him since yesterday afternoon."I scowled and bitten my lip. "Go and ask around. Check if anyone has seen him. And don't just talk to
Chapter 154Author's POVThe council had just finished up, the elders rising one by one from their benches, their robes rustling as they talked quietly to each other. Their discussions had been long as they had arguments about security, mistrust, and the nagging tension of the killings that still hung over the pack like a dark cloud.Alpha Duaine, in the front row, had ridden it out. His mask-like face was its impassive countenance. His eyes darted over the backs going away, his mind already leaping over the niggling quarrels and into those that weighed upon his mind more immediately. He had heard, answered when he was called upon to, but otherwise lay uninvolved. That was his style, controlled, measured, deliberate. And as he stood to leave, a voice called him.Alpha," Nathan called smoothly, striding ahead before the hall began to clear. His presence, always commanding, had an edge to it that few ignored. "May I have a word with you, in private, please? It concerns the information I
