Chapter 100

Lessie's POV

I was lost the moment I awoke. My fingers ran over the smooth bedclothes rather than the hard earth that I had lain upon before sleeping.

But now I was home, in my bedroom. My mouth hung open in amazement. Am I dreaming?, how did I end up here? Who brought me here? I asked myself.

Swinging my legs over the edge of the bed, still stiff from the hike the previous day.

That's when I heard it.

The sound of a booming voice down the corridor outside the room. My heart pounding in my chest.

It was Alpha Duaine's.

"Do you know what happened to her?" Alpha Duaine bellowed, his anger quivering me. "I asked you to do one thing, Dave. One thing. And you couldn't get it straight."

Dave tried to explain. "Alpha, she told me she was taking a walk and I wasn't to."

"That is no excuse," Alpha Duaine retorted at him. "You were charged with keeping her safe. How am I supposed to trust you if you can't even keep one woman safe?"

And then I heard a voice interrupting me. My maid

Chapter 110Duaine's POVNo chance in a million years that I could possibly make this explanation and own up to the whole Nathan and I archenemies thing. Not now and never at least until I was able to deal with the fallout. If I spoke out, it was going to be over. My history with Nathan had become entangled with my history with her father. They had all hated me, her father, Nathan, and numerous others who had cursed my name through their mouths, because I had done something. And maybe they were right. I could be the world's greatest Alpha, yet I was no saint.I sat on the edge of the bed, arms and eyes scanning the floor as Lessie approached me. She hesitated for a moment, and then her voice cut through the conflict in my head."Alpha Duaine," she called gently, like she knew I was wrestling something in my head."I think I'd like to sleep in my room tonight," she informed me.Those phrases cut me deeper than I had anticipated. Nights she had slept here, in my bed, in my place, in my

Chapter 109Lessie's POVThe conversation we'd been having floated around us. Alpha Duaine's eyes were on me. His hand on the back of my shoulder still, but no longer hurting, more like he was grounding me, keeping me grounded to him, body and soul."Alpha Duaine." I faltered, "how did you and my father become enemies?"His entire body stiffened. "its something you don't need to worry about, Lessie," he drawled finally, his sentences slow, deep, measured.I frowned. "You're saying it's not something I should worry about? He's my father, Alpha Duaine. Don't you think I have the right to know why the two most important men in my life can't stand each other?"He took a deep breath, and his hand dangled idle from my shoulder as he leaned back next to me along the bed. He lay his head back, as if the ceiling itself would answer him, or some conveyance by which he could finally say the things that he had been shut up inside of himself all these years. When he did talk, his voice was soft. "

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 108

Chapter 108Duaine's POVI didn't waste any time after the council meeting. As the elders stood up from their seats, their gossip mingling into a soft chastisement of me, of the fact that I'd finally appeared before them and declared Lessie my destined mate. It was simple enough to demonstrate it to them, tougher to make her worth it at her age. They nodded, they listened, but the were filled with skepticism. And when the most senior among them told me they would "get back to me," I knew that their skepticism still lingered.None of it mattered to me then. I moved quickly down the broad corridors of the pack house. Only Lessie's face remained in my mind. As I shoved open the door to my room, I saw her immediately. She was sitting forward on the edge of my bed, her hands cramped in her lap. Her eyes met mine the moment I entered the doorway."Alpha Duiane?" she called in a gentle voice. My eyes moved over her body as though I searched for some indication, some bruise, some mark that

Chapter 107Duaine's POVI sat on the long, waxed table in the council chamber, fingers lightly drumming against wood as we waited for the meeting to start. The council members were filing in.But one face was missing. Nathan.I inched myself forward in my seat, looking at the chairs once more just to make sure, but no, he hadn't shown. Typical. Always late, always trying to make a big production out of it, always trying to show those who thought themselves better than rules that they weren't. Half of me was considering whether or not he did it on purpose, just to test my patience. The most senior of the elders spoke, "Let us go on," he said. "Whether we are complete or not, the matters before us cannot be delayed any longer."I stood up, ready to focus. I knew the routine. The entire room was waiting for me, waiting for me to defend myself, waiting for me to defend my claim once more that Lessie was my destined partner. As we began to negotiate, I declared it loudly, firmly, of the

Chapter 106Author's POVNathan's words to her was like a cloud of smoke, dense and stifling, closing in around Lessie's mind so that she could barely catch her breath. She had only just told him, with all the strength she possessed, that she would stand by Alpha Duiane, defend him to the death. But Nathan was not so readily convinced. He leaned in close, his eyes burning down into hers with an unpleasing intensity, his lips curling up in a sympathetic, knowing grin."You sound so certain," Nathan drawled, his tone almost calm, almost sensual. "But do you realize that I have had a recurrence of this moment? This exact speech. This exact blind faith?" He stepped closer, his voice falling to the edge of a whisper. "This is exactly what Duiane's former lover said. She swore to die for him, and she did."She relinquished everything, her breath, her future, her soul to save him. And now what? Where is she? Gone. Ash in memory, no longer, while Duiane glistens over some other woman.Lessie'

  • My Professor, My Enemy, My Mate   chapter 105

Chapter 105Lessie's POVThis morning hit me differently. The birds were nicer, trilling in and out of branches in some kind of song that woke me up out of the fringes of my own reality. The sun came up earlier than usual too, blazing boldly over clouds like it had something to prove.I was restless, as if my heart longed to get free from the walls of the mansion. School was on vacation. I felt as if the world outside was calling me to come out, to summon me to get to know something more about this place to which I had only begun to think of home.I struggled through my bedroom, already dressed in a dress that did not restrict breathing. My maid trailed behind me, she had a faint smile on her lips as if awaiting me to yearn for fresh air."Where would you like to go, my lady?" she whispered, turning her head as was her habit."I don't know," I said to her, peering out over the tops of the trees that curved just beyond the reach of pack lands. "I've been here a while, and yet I still f
