I have just fallen asleep after working around the clock, but my mom insists on dragging me to the supermarket first thing in the morning. Having mistaken us for sisters, the cashier compliments Mom for her youth and looks. But after Mom explains to her smilingly that we're mother and daughter, the cashier's eyes go wide in disbelief. With mixed feelings, she says, "You… You look more like the daughter, though…" That remark leaves me shell-shocked for a moment. Then, I turn around to stare at my and Mom's faces in the mirror. Mom has such smooth and supple skin that she looks like a 20-year-old college student. Meanwhile, there's me, looking like a 50-year-old hag because of the freckles and dark spots covering my face. Mom's smile vanishes instantly. "How dare you speak that way! Are you saying that my daughter looks old?" Since I don't have a good night's sleep, I become uncontrollably pissed. Just as I'm about to curse at the cashier, I catch a glimpse of the crow's feet around Mom's eyes disappearing rapidly from the corner of my eye.

Chapter 1
I rubbed my eyes in disbelief. When I looked again, one of the fine lines at the corners of Mom's eyes had definitely vanished.Last night around 12:30 am, I had gone to the kitchen for a glass of water while finishing up some work. Seeing Mom still glued to her show, I had urged her to get some sleep. After all, she was in her 50s. She couldn't afford to pull all-nighters anymore. She just waved me off, ignoring the advice. Finally, I reminded her, "Your crow's feet are showing."Her face went pale instantly. She scrambled for her phone, frantically checking her reflection in the camera. When she spotted the lines, she bolted for the bathroom to slather on a bunch of skincare products.Back then, I'd seen two distinct wrinkles at the corner of her eye. Now, one was gone. The surrounding noise snapped me back to reality.I shook my head, thinking I had to be hallucinating. After all, I hadn't slept well.Mom was still busy berating a sales clerk nearby. The constant bustle of

Chapter 2
Mom's eyes darted around for a second before she turned to bark at the cashier, "Exactly! My daughter is a business owner. Does she look like the kind of person who'd steal two dollars from you?"The cashier clicked her tongue. She sized me up from head to toe before finally resting her gaze on my face. Her tone dripped with disdain as she said, "Being a business owner doesn't prove anything. Looking the way she does, maybe she's got some kind of kleptomania."Her words hit like a slap.My hand beside me curled into a fist before I could stop it.Whispers and muttered comments floated around. Someone even snapped pictures."Wow, she looks so old! Even older than my mom. Does she not take care of herself?""Maybe she really has some weird habits.""I thought the woman beside her was her daughter. Turns out that's her mother. What a plot twist! The mother looks younger than the child."Memory after memory of those same judgmental stares began to needle at me again. I could barely

Chapter 3
A woman's voice whispered, thick with gossip, "Hey, do you think that woman in the supermarket really stole that lollipop? She didn't look the type to me."After a few seconds, another woman stammered, "A-Actually, I saw what happened. It wasn't her. It was the person next to her. The lady with her slipped it into her pocket. She was on her phone and didn't notice a thing."The first woman gasped, asking why she hadn't said anything earlier."Are you kidding? Better to stay out of other people's business."The sound of their footsteps faded into the distance. My hand stayed frozen on the door handle. I was in total shock. Why would Mom do that to me?But even as my mind screamed that it was impossible, memories of Mom's strange behavior began to flood back. Her insistence on going to the snack aisle and that sudden bump…For years, every time I went out in public with her, some kind of trouble found me. The suspicion was becoming undeniable.Suddenly, the words of an old tradi

Chapter 4
Afraid that Mom would sense something was off, I skipped dinner and retreated to my room.I opened a streaming app and clicked into a room raising money for a baby with a cleft lips and palate. On the screen, a couple was performing in a dilapidated room. After seven hours of streaming, they'd only collected 1,200 dollars. The comments section was a cesspool of trolls."Have the mom put on some stockings and do a suggestive dance. I'll send a gift then!""Tell the dad to eat a handful of dirt, and I'll donate 200 dollars!"It was disgusting to watch people turn their tragedy into a joke.Without a second thought, I sent 20 of the most expensive gifts in a row. I immediately contacted them privately and donated half a million dollars.A barrage of digital fireworks flooded the screen, nearly obscuring the video. The couple burst into tears."Thank you, Ms. Buckner! You've saved our family! We will pray for you for the rest of our lives. May God bless you! Kindness never goes u

Chapter 5
Mom's absence was exactly the opportunity I needed. There was another person in this house I was dying to deal with.I walked into the dining room and told the helpers to prepare breakfast.Ten minutes passed, and nothing appeared. When I finally pushed for an answer, our longtime helper, Ellie Hamilton, showed up.She gave me a sidelong look, clearly annoyed. "Ms. Buckner, don't you know we never prepare breakfast in this house? Just have some juice and be done with it."She carelessly slid a glass of kiwi juice across the table toward me.I looked at her with a cold smile. It wasn't that they couldn't make breakfast. It was that Mom didn't eat it, so Ellie had simply decided to stop doing her job entirely.I stared at the green liquid. "If it isn't prepared, just go make it now. Do I really need to teach you something so basic? Also, I've told you countless times that I don't drink kiwi juice."Every helper in this house knew I was allergic to kiwi. Yet Ellie, emboldened by h

Chapter 6
I didn't even recognize Mom when she walked through the door. Her face looked even rougher than before—puffy and bloated, with skin that sagged away from the bone.If it hadn't been for her familiar outfit, I wouldn't have recognized her.I bit back a smirk. "Mom? Did you get some work done?"She clutched her scarf, trying to hide her face, and immediately began badgering me about why I'd fired Ellie.I told her the truth, "Because I've hated her for years."Mom didn't bother asking what had happened. Instead, she kept insisting I hire Ellie back. Her reaction was exactly what I'd expected, which only confirmed my theory. Ellie had been acting on Mom's orders all along."She practically raised you! How could you throw away all those years of history and just kick her out? Go bring her back right now!"I laughed.Did I look like an idiot? Why would I invite a rat back into my pantry and offer my dinner as its litter box?"The fact that it's been 'all those years' is exactly wh

Chapter 7
Over several days, I kept hearing Mom on the phone in the room. She kept her voice low.The person on the other end seemed to be threatening her. Every now and then, they'd argue. I guessed it was Ellie. After yelling at each other all afternoon, they seemed to reach some kind of agreement and didn't call again. The next day at noon, things blew up.I walked into my office lobby when someone suddenly lunged at me. It was Ellie. She collapsed to her knees in front of me with a thud. Tears streamed down her face as she begged, "Ms. Buckner, how can you be so heartless? My husband's counting on me to cover his surgery!"Please, Ms. Buckner, forgive me. I can't lose this job. Think of how hard I've worked all these years. Let me go back to work!"She'd timed it perfectly around lunch to make this scene.People nearby caught the scent of gossip and circled around. Strangers whispered, trying to figure out what was happening.Someone asked Ellie what was going on.Wiping her tears,

Chapter 8
Ellie grabbed my mom, pleading, "Mrs. Buckner, please, help me! Tara's going to fire me!"Mom, clearly annoyed, asked what she'd done this time.Ellie shook her head frantically. "I didn't do anything! I just followed your instructions to give her kiwi juice she's allergic to. You said she'd lash out if she saw it, but she didn't react at all!"I kept provoking her, but she suddenly turned into a different person. She kicked me out and demanded I pay back 32 thousand dollars! Mrs. Buckner, please, you have to help me!"Mom thought for a moment. "That brat has been acting strange lately."Noticing that Mom was ignoring her, Ellie began to spill everything. "Mrs. Buckner, you can't abandon me! You're the one who told me to go after Tara! I only did what you said!"Mom's expression flipped in an instant. "Ellie! Watch your mouth! One more word of that nonsense, and things would get very ugly!"The video cut to black.Mom opened her mouth, but she couldn't say a word to defend hers
