Chapter 2

Author: Whiskers
The next second, Charlie turned to me. "Is this how you act as a mother, Harps? When did you become this selfish and vicious?"

His gaze dropped to the suitcase on the floor, a trace of mockery in his eyes. "Staging a walkout, huh?"

Dakota ran straight to him and grabbed his hand. "Mom hurt Cecilia and won't even apologize."

I watched Charlie's expression darken, and for a moment, I was pulled back to when I first arrived in this house. Even the household staff used to push me around.

Back then, he would fiercely step in each time. "If anyone messes with Harps again, you're out of the Lockwood residence—no exceptions!"

Ever since Cecilia showed up, however, I began to see the real allocation of his attention. What he gave me didn't even register next to what he gave her.

When Dakota's school held a speech competition, no one informed me. They simply had Cecilia attend in my place.

Afterward, when I asked her how Dakota performed and what feedback the teacher gave, she had nothing to report. I was frantic and lashed out at her, ultimately saying a few harsh words.

That same night, she collapsed from poisoning.

The housekeeper, Moira Clarkson, pointed at me and made the call. "I saw Mrs. Lockwood go into the kitchen. It looked like she added something to Ms. Moore's bowl."

Without running a basic fact check, Charlie grabbed me by the collar and blew up. "Have you had enough? Cecilia only went to one competition, and you got jealous like that? You could've killed her!

"With a mother like you, I can't imagine what our kids will turn into."

Of course, I snapped back furiously after getting accused like that. "And what exactly can you teach them? To betray their own family? To be disloyal to their future partners?"

He lost patience and shoved me. I stumbled, lost my balance, and slammed into the cabinet beside me. A decorative piece fell cleanly and struck my forehead. Blood started running down in a glaring red.

Charlie froze for a second and stepped forward, as if to check on me, only to stop midway and pull his hand back. Coldly, he spat out, "This is what you get for hurting others."

I sank to the floor, my head spinning, the room going out of focus. Then, everything went black. When I woke up, all my memories had come back online.

My son, Dominic Lockwood, came running out from behind Charlie, crying as he rushed toward me. "Mom, don't go…"

Before I could respond, Dakota tapped him lightly on the head and whispered, almost like she was closing a deal. "If she leaves, Cecilia will be our new mom."

Dominic froze mid-cry. Just like that, the switch flipped. He wiped his tears, lifted his head, and broke into a smile. "Okay! I like Cecilia the most! She's gentler than Mom and doesn't force me to study!"

He had always been mischievous and headstrong. I kept trying to instill some structure, teaching him humility, honesty, and basic decency, but when Cecilia showed up, the entire framework shifted.

In her model, kids should be left to their natural instincts, not managed too strictly by adults. She would always say, "Harps' approach is too aggressive."

So, she let Dominic get away with everything. When he bullied other kids, she didn't correct him. Instead, she leveraged the Lockwood family's influence and forced the other child's parents to apologize.

"Boys need to be brave," she lectured. "If someone hits you, you hit back. That's what makes a man."

With that kind of backing, Dominic became unmanageable. I escalated the issue to Charlie more than once, telling him that indulgence like this would ruin the child. He dismissed it outright.

"Kids are innately kind. You're the one overthinking this."

In the end, I was isolated from every angle. Internally and externally, I had no support. Somehow, Cecilia became the one positioned as the woman who had sacrificed the most for this family.

"I have nothing left!" Cecilia screamed, too emotional to reason with. "The last thing that'll make me feel better is if I take them down with me!"Dakota and Dominic burst into terrified sobs. She looked at me, tears streaming down her face. "Mom, help! I'm scared!"Dominic, on the other hand, was completely frozen, crying silently, unable to speak."Cecilia, you're about to be a mother soon. If something happens to you, what about your baby?" I asked coldly. That question made her hesitate for a moment. Seizing the opening, Charlie rushed forward and pulled our kids away. Startled, Cecilia lashed out and started struggling with him.I swiftly dragged Dakota and Dominic to my side, moved them out of the way, and called the police.A sudden crash of shattering glass cut through the air. By the time I lowered my phone and looked over, Cecilia and Charlie were already on the ground, sprawled across a mess of broken shards.Their blood pooled across the floor, meeting each other at

Unlike Charlie, who hid behind a polished, respectable front, Cecilia was rotten to the core. In a sense, they were a perfect match."Are you planning to run back to the baby's father?" I asked. She let out a cold laugh. "He's already in prison—the same doctor who helped me trick Charlie into believing I had kidney failure and leukemia. Guess he got what he deserved. He did too many dirty things and eventually got reported."I knew who had pulled the strings behind that report—my family."Don't you love Charlie?" I asked.Cecilia burst into laughter, almost hysterical. "Of course, I do. He's hot, wealthy, and we grew up together. I'll be honest—I couldn't accept it at first."If you, a random nobody with no memory of yourself, got to be his wife, why couldn't I, his childhood sweetheart who just fell on hard times, be the same?"She tilted her head, her smile twisted. "Now that I see it, I didn't lose out to you at all. So what if you're a rich heiress? Your stupid little kids t

"Honey, you and Harper were together for nine years—she loved you so much," Cecilia added."She's still human at the end of the day. As long as you're sincere, I'm sure she'll give in. Admit your mistakes and apologize. She must be upset that you abandoned her, so you have to be earnest."She spoke with confidence, clearly knowing exactly what she was doing.Charlie seemed to realize the situation. His voice turned cold. "As you said, I abandoned her. I don't want to deceive her anymore. She's innocent in all of this.""And what about me?" Cecilia countered."I used to be a wealthy heiress, too, and look where I am. You promised me a good life and swore I'd never have to suffer. But as soon as we married, your company ran into trouble. I can't endure the pain of another family falling apart!"I couldn't listen anymore. I turned off the recording, a chill running through me.So, that was their true motive. I knew Lockwood Group had run into trouble, and yes, my family might've be

Dominic had grown a little over the past year and was starting to look like his father. He grabbed my hand, eyes brimming with tears."Mom, we misunderstood you. Cecilia is the evil one!" he cried out."Now that she has her own baby, she doesn't care about us at all. She yells at us every day! Dad fights with her for our sake all the time. He even said he wished you were here. Only you truly cared about us."Charlie knew I had poured so much effort into raising Dominic, and he nodded along. Still, concerned about his pride, he didn't say a word and simply let the kids plead on his behalf instead.I pushed Dominic away. They were my children, and it would be a lie to say I could abandon them completely. That said, the ways they had hurt me left a scar in my heart that would never fully heal."Sir, you've really got the wrong person," I said. "My name is Harper Stone, heiress of Stone Group. I'm not your wife, nor am I the mother of these two brats. You'd better leave now, or securi

Dakota and Dominic even served as the flower girl and page boy. On the big day, he accidentally stepped on Cecilia's dress, and she lost it, yelling at him in front of everyone. With me out of the picture, she no longer needed to pretend to be a kind stepmother.Back home, I started helping with the family business. Mom worried about me and kept telling me not to overwork myself.I owned 20% of the company's shares, meaning just one year's dividends matched several years of the Lockwoods' profits.I also reconnected with old friends, and they were stunned that I had disappeared for nine whole years. Of course, this had happened because Charlie never wanted me in public. So, he never took me to meet his friends. He saw me as a stray and worried my presence might embarrass him if anyone discovered our family's "secrets". I didn't bother explaining the past nine years to anyone. What was past was past.Still, walls had ears. Visiting high-end venues with my friends, I eventually ran

A circle of strangers stood around my bed."Silly girl, you're home," the woman said. "I'm your mother. As soon as we got your call, we sent people to keep an eye on the Lockwoods. I never expected that bastard would dare drag my precious daughter to the hospital to save his mistress!"Watching Mom scold them with such fury, I felt a wave of relief wash over me. At last, my good days were here.…Nine years had passed, and the elders had aged noticeably. That car accident from years ago had been secretly plotted by our family's rivals. The mastermind behind it was already behind bars, but everyone still believed I was dead."I'm so glad you're back. At last, my precious daughter has returned!"A pang of bittersweetness hit me.For the past nine years, I had almost completely lost myself. My identity had been reduced to Charlie's wife and the mother of two kids.Shifting constantly between those roles, I hadn't lived as myself in the longest time, nor had anyone truly valued me
