Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Perfect Timing
“Mom, the food’s a bit too greasy for me. Could I possibly have some salad instead?” I asked tentatively.

Although the table was full of luxurious dishes, they were all Julianne’s favorites. They did not suit my taste at all.

The steak tartare, in particular, brought back bad memories. Back when I was living in the countryside, I was forced to eat spoiled meat because I was starving. To this day, the sight of raw meat made me slightly nauseous.

My mother looked at me in annoyance.

“The cook’s gone for the day. You should be happy there’s food on the table at all. Stop being so picky.”

Julianne chimed in and deliberately placed some steak tartare on my plate.

“Zinnia, this isn’t greasy. You should eat more of it.”

I kept quiet and lowered my head as I silently counted down

Three, two, one.

The system’s alert tone rang out.

[Electric shock protocol activated.]

My mother instantly collapsed from her chair. Several of her porcelain crowns, which she had proudly maintained, chipped from the impact.

“Why am I being punished?!”

[Jenna Dawson prepared truffle risotto for Julianne Dawson but claimed to have no time to prepare a simple salad for her biological daughter. She remembers Julianne Dawson’s preferences clearly yet remains unaware of her biological daughter’s aversion to raw meat. The system has administered a Level 3 electric shock punishment, which corresponds to the degree of favoritism.]

My mother’s hands trembled from the pain as she moved away from the table.

“Ugh, fine! I’ll make your salad. Are you happy now?”

She stood up and dumped all of the steak tartare into the trash.

“My steak tartare!”

Julianne’s expression was particularly amusing to me. I struggled to hold back my laughter and felt an immense sense of satisfaction.

So, as long as I measured it up against Julianne, any request I made could be fulfilled.

For the first time, I was finally experiencing a taste of fairness.

Julianne finished her meal without a word before she ran toward her room.

With the system in place, why should I return to that damp and stuffy store room?

I needed a proper study environment if I was going to ace my exams and get out of this house for good.

“Mom, Dad, I’d like a room like my sister’s.”

As soon as I said it, Julianne froze on the staircase. She turned and yelled, “Zinnia, are you serious?! My room was custom-designed by a famous French interior architect. Some of the pieces are one-of-a-kind. How are they supposed to find an identical one for you? Besides, what would a clueless country bumpkin like you even know about living in a room like that? Don’t push your luck!”

I smiled.

“You have one. Why shouldn’t I? It’s only fair.”

Jacob, who had been silent, stepped in and shielded Julianne.

“Zinnia, that’s enough.”

However, my father and mother did not speak up immediately this time.

Julianne began to look uneasy.

“Mom, Dad, say something! I can’t sleep in just any bed. My skin is sensitive to different fabrics. This isn’t fair to me at all!”

After a long silence, my mother finally spoke.

“Annie, let Sophia use your room just for tonight. Tomorrow, I’ll have the guest room fully redecorated just for her.”

My father sighed and agreed, “Your mother’s right. We don’t want to provoke the system. I’ll check tomorrow if there’s a way to disable it before it turns this whole house upside down.”

So, they did know how to be fair.

They were just never willing to treat me fairly.

Julianne descended the stairs, and her eyes were filled with tears of resentment.

As she walked past me, she whispered menacingly, “Don’t get too cocky, Sophia. That system won’t protect you forever. You’ll regret this.”

My father hurried forward obsequiously to greet him. Then, he casually handed the man the whip he was holding.“Mr. Wachs, this is my daughter. She’s underage, and I guarantee you’ll be pleased. Feel free to have all the fun you want with her.”Mr. Wachs swept his eyes over me with a lewd and vulgar expression.“Good. I appreciate the gesture.”After that, my father led the whole family away. As he closed the door, he did not forget to add a reminder. “Now that you see how serious I am, I trust that you’ll provide us with strong support in our upcoming venture.”My heart slowly sank.I knew my parents did not love me. But I never imagined that they would go this far for their own gain.My hands and feet were tied. So, I could only watch in horror as the man stepped closer and closer to me.“Schoolgirls are always so tender. You’re exactly my type.”Without warning, he lunged at me with his large and greasy body.I twisted my body with all my strength and managed to avoid bein

The moment my mother saw me, her eyes instantly welled up with tears.“My poor baby! I can’t imagine how hard it’s been for you here all alone!”Her behavior left me completely bewildered, and I had no interest in entertaining her drama. However, my mother kept clinging to me and refused to let go.“Zinnia, you’re still underage. You can’t handle that kind of money without us. It’s time to come home.”I pulled my hand away forcefully.“Honestly? Life without parents is better than life with you. At least, I have a nice place to live and food to eat now.”My mother’s face flushed with embarrassment. Still, she remained stubborn and refused to leave.“We sent Julianne away! It’ll just be the four of us now, like a real family. We know we failed you, so give us a chance to make it right.”I looked at the coarse fabric of her dress, her cheap jewelry, and the wrinkles lining her face. They made me laugh to myself.I was not naive enough to believe that she genuinely wanted to mak

In the footage, I was sitting upright and carefully working through the problems on my paper. On the other side of the classroom, Julianne was writing furiously using a cheat sheet. She finished the ninety-minute exam in just twenty minutes. Her leisurely demeanor contrasted sharply with my intense focus.Others might not have known, but I was aware that Julianne had cheated in almost every exam to maintain her top-student image.Perhaps she was too eager to expose me. Perhaps she was panicking and grabbing at straws. But she forgot that she had been the one cheating. The journalists picked up their cameras and began filming frantically.“Hold on. I thought we were here to expose the Dawson family’s biological daughter for having poor character and cheating. How did this become about Julianne?”“Who cares?! A story’s a story. Julianne’s always throwing money at PR to have pieces about her being the elegant, scholarly heiress. This scandal’s way juicier!”“Julianne, is this the

I watched her with calm amusement.“Oh? What exactly have I done?”Julianne crossed her arms and announced to our parents with full confidence, “You guys might not know this, but I saw it myself at school. Zinnia failed three pop quizzes in a row. The trust shares are based on grades and merit. Even with the system, she shouldn’t get anything near this much.“She’s obviously cheating. Either she hacked the system or messed with her school records. She’s trying to steal what’s ours!“The police are on their way. Once she’s arrested, the shares will automatically revert to us.”My mother looked at Julianne with delighted surprise.“Sweetie, is that true?”“Absolutely.”My father’s eyes instantly lit up.“That’s my girl! Well done!”The police arrived shortly after, and Julianne pointed at me.“That’s her! That’s Zinnia! She bribed our teachers and falsified her grades. Arrest her now!”However, I stepped forward nonchalantly.“Officer, my records are real. I scored badly tho

The next morning, my father’s company published the detailed share allocations.[Zinnia Dawson: 65% of shares.][Jacob Dawson: 35% of shares.][Julianne Dawson: 0.]The whole family was watching the financial news, and they erupted in outrage.Julianne, who had suggested turning on the TV, stared at it in complete disbelief.“Dad, you promised me 40% of the shares! Why am I getting nothing? How did Zinnia end up with that much? She doesn’t deserve it!”My father’s hands trembled as he urgently called his secretary.“What’s wrong with you? I approved the distribution plan yesterday! Who told you to publish that?”His secretary sounded upset and defensive as her voice came through. “Mr. Dawson, it’s the government compliance system. It overrode our settings. You authorized this, and there’s nothing I can do.”“What kind of ridiculous system is this?! It’s my company! I have a say on how the shares are split! Get me my shares back now!” my dad roared in frustration and slammed a

I knew Julianne’s delinquent attitude at school well enough to know she was not just making empty threats.Sure enough, the next morning, the back seat of the Rolls-Royce was drenched in paint.Julianne sat in the passenger seat and smiled apologetically at me.“I was going to offer you a ride, but look at this mess. Someone accidentally spilled paint in the back. It’s totally ruined. Sorry about that.”Jacob then handed me an umbrella.“Mom, Dad, and I need the cars for work, so they’re all not available. You’ll have to walk to school.”As if afraid of being punished by the system, he quickly added, “You can have the car after school. That should be fair, right?”Fair?I snorted coldly. My phone showed a temperature of 104 degrees Fahrenheit. It was the hottest time of the day.Not only would it be cooler after school, but more cars would be available. Julianne still would not have to walk. How was that fair?Seeing Julianne’s smug expression, I understood. These two were
