Chapter 5

Author: J.X Cross
The day we are supposed to meet finally arrives.

I put on the dress I pick out days ago, fasten the Van Cleef & Arpels necklace Richard sends me around my neck, and get my hair trimmed into the style that suits me best.

As I cross the campus quad, a guy I don’t recognize suddenly stops me.

His ears turn red as he asks if he can have my Instagram.

For a second, I don’t even process what he is asking.

It isn’t until he awkwardly repeats himself that I realize he is actually asking for my contact information.

I politely turn him down and hurry toward the student center.

The delay makes me a little late.

From a distance, I spot a sleek black Porsche parked along the curb.

Richard is already there.

I take a deep breath and start walking toward him. Then I see Sophie step in front of him first.

“Hi, Richard.”

She smiles naturally, warmly.

“I’m Sophie. You’ve seen my pictures.”

She has clearly dressed up for this.

Everything is carefully chosen, from her dress to her hair, as if she has rehearsed this moment in advance.

Richard looks at her with a calm, unreadable expression.

I stop walking.

The translucent messages appear again after being silent for so long.

【Our girl finally makes her move! Who wouldn’t fall for that face?】

【But did Emily actually lose the weight?】

【Who cares? Even if she shows up now, she’ll only make Sophie look even better.】

Sophie pulls up my old photos on her phone and holds them out to Richard.

“I really didn’t want to tell you any of this.”

She lightly bites her lip, looking genuinely troubled.

“But I can’t stand by and watch you keep getting lied to.”

“This is what Emily looks like. She keeps sending you edited pictures. I’ve told her not to do this, but she only wants to get something out of you.”

Her voice is soft, but loud enough for the people nearby to hear.

Several students turn to look.

Their whispers quickly follow.

“No way. Is this some kind of catfishing scam? Is she just after his money?”

“That’s messed up.”

“Poor guy. He really showed up for a catfish?”

For a moment, the attention makes me want to turn around and leave.

But I stop myself.

I’m not the girl I used to be anymore.

The eyes fixed on me from every direction, along with the guy who just blushed while asking for my Instagram, remind me of something.

I have every right to walk toward Richard with my head held high.

I take a deep breath.

Then I walk toward him, one step at a time.

Richard looks down at the photo in his hand.

He doesn’t ask something.

He doesn’t look disappointed, either.

Instead, he simply hands the phone back to Sophie.

“The person I’m here to meet today isn’t you.”

His voice is calm, almost cold.

“If Emily has something to tell me, I’ll wait for her to tell me herself.”

The smile on Sophie’s face freezes for a second.

But she quickly replaces it with a wounded expression.

“Richard, I’m just afraid you’re going to get hurt.”

“If she really has nothing to hide, then why hasn’t she shown up yet?”

The translucent messages start urging her on.

【Just a little more! If Sophie keeps trying, he’ll add her soon.】

【Men all like girls who are gentle and beautiful. Emily doesn’t stand a chance.】

Sophie opens her mouth to say something else.

I cut her off.

“Hi.”

She doesn’t recognize me.

Her eyes move over my face and dress.

For a split second, I see surprise in them.

Then comes a flash of resentment.

But she quickly puts the polite smile back on her face.

“Hi. Can I help you? Who are you looking for?”

I ignore her.

I look up and meet Richard’s confused gaze.

Then I lift my hand, letting the Van Cleef & Arpels necklace he gives me catch the light just below my collarbone.

I smile at him.

“Richard.”

“I’m here.”

Sophie still refuses to give up.That night, she sends my photos to an anonymous campus gossip account that specializes in posting rumors. Before long, my photos are posted online. The headline is glaring.【From almost two hundred pounds to this in three months. Is that actually possible?】The post is quickly shared into the student Discord. Then Sophie uses anonymous accounts to steer the comments.【I don’t believe exercise alone can make someone lose weight that fast.】【Either she secretly got surgery, or she used some sketchy medication.】【Destroying your body just to land a rich boyfriend really shouldn’t be praised.】【Now everyone is calling her an inspirational goddess. If someone copies her and gets hurt, who’s responsible?】For a while, the comment section turns into a battlefield. Some people defend me.【Do you have proof? If not, stop making things up.】【I’ve seen her at the rec center. She trains almost every day.】【She looks healthy. This looks like the result of exercise a

I originally think they will at least try to defend themselves. To my surprise, the group exchanges a few looks, and their attitude changes faster than someone flipping a page.Someone takes out his phone on the spot and transfers the money he bet against me.“Emily, I said some really awful things before. This fifty is me losing the bet, and also me apologizing.”Another person becomes even more eager and hands me the iced coffee in his hand.“I sent mine too. Honestly, you’re incredible.”“To keep going like that for three months? Not everyone can do that.”Soon, the tone of everyone around me changes completely.“Emily, you’re seriously a whole different person now.”“It’s not just that you got prettier. You’re glowing.”“Those memes before were way too much. The fact that you pushed through all of that is honestly amazing.”They crowd around me, as if they can make up for every cruel laugh with praise.Sophie’s face grows uglier and uglier.“Can you all stop being such suck-ups?”S

Sophie looks as if she has finally found my weakness. She laughs immediately.“See? I told you I wasn’t lying.”“From beginning to end, Emily is the one who lies.”She still wears that condescending expression.Only now, the look in her eyes is no longer the old contempt. It is jealousy so strong she can barely hold it back.“Emily, don’t think losing weight and getting pretty means you can erase the past.”“Everyone has seen what you look like at two hundred pounds. These photos are proof. You’ll never get away from it.”I ignore her shouting.I only look at Richard. There is no shock in his eyes. No disgust. He just looks at me.“Whether that photo is you or not doesn’t matter. You don’t have to explain it right now.”“When you’re ready, you can tell me slowly. Let’s go to dinner, okay?”The corner of my mouth lifts a little.I want to tell him now.He deserves it.“I told you before that my grandmother raised me.”“After she passed away, I lost the only family I had. The crowd falls silent all at once.A few people glance at each other, as if they have just heard something ridiculous.“Wait. She’s Emily?”“No way. Isn’t Emily that… fat girl everyone always jokes about?”“I’ve seen Emily before. She doesn’t look like this at all. Did he get the wrong person?”Sophie freezes where she stands. Her gaze drags from my face down to the hem of my dress, then climbs back to my face again. It is as if she refuses to believe it no matter what. She even pulls up old photos of me and compares them to the person standing in front of her, one by one.“Impossible.”Her voice tightens.“She’s not Emily.”“Richard, you’ve never seen her in person. You don’t know what she really looks like. There’s no way she can be Emily.”Richard ignores every doubtful voice around us.He only looks at me, his gaze deeper than before, and somehow even quieter.“Come on.”He takes my hand gently.“I made a reservation. Let’s go to dinner.”I don’t leave right away.Instead, I turn

Richard’s gaze settles on the necklace and lingers there for the briefest moment. The next second, he lifts his eyes to mine. For the first time, those calm, restrained eyes betray a flicker of emotion. I catch a fleeting flash of wonder in them.I see his Adam’s apple bob slightly.“Is it you?”His voice is low, but clear enough for me to hear.In that moment, all the pain I endure over the past three months, every drop of sweat I shed, suddenly feels worth it.The floating comments, however, descend into chaos.【Wait, who is this gorgeous girl? Is she here to steal Richard too?】【No way. Is Richard’s car too flashy, so now it’s attracting random girls?】【Hold on… why does her face look kind of familiar?】I curve my lips, about to greet Richard properly. But Sophie’s expression changes all at once. She steps forward and shoves me.“Who the hell are you?”“Richard doesn’t even go to our school. Did you mistake him for someone else?”I am caught off guard and stumble backward. Before I
