RIVER

As soon as I step out, I have no idea where I am supposed to go. I figure that the first thing would be to cross the road, but before I can take a step forward, I feel a tug and pull on my hand. I am spun around, and I am face-to-face with Arlin. He has a smirk on his face, and even though it's the kind of expression that Taylor usually carries, his is more chilling and sends a kind of wave down my spine.

"Where are you going?" He asked in a low tone, and I wanted to take a step back, but his grip on my elbow tightened with each passing minute. Or maybe it is my brain that is making it feel that way.

"Home," I say, explaining it for him if he did not understand what I meant when I stormed out on him.

"So I brought you out on this date, and you decided to embarrass me?" He asked, and I could see the anger ticking in his eyes as his jaw tightened.

"Embrace you?" I ask with a gasp as I try to take my hand out of his. "Lying to me and bringing me here, and I am the one who is doing

River just obliterated Arlin in the street, and I, for one, am eating it up. But tell me… do you think this is the last we’ll see of him, or is this the kind of boy who slithers back after being told off? Drop your thoughts, or I swear the next time Arlin appears, I’ll let him get one smug line in before River shuts him down again. Don’t tempt me, besties. COMMENT.

RIVERI look down at the tickets he had shoved in my hand and then back up at his face. "What is this, and why?" I ask. He looks confused at my question, as if that was not what he expected from me."Tickets to the game""Why?" I ask, wondering if he thought I was interested in the game just because I asked."Earlier today, you spoke about how..." He was stuttering and overgesturing with his hands. He looked flustered, as if I had put him on the spit, so I nodded and took a step back to create a bigger gap between us."Thank you for this.""There are three tickets, so you can tag along with your friends," he said, the pressure suddenly lifting off his shoulders. It was almost visible how I saw the flustered look fly away from his face in the moment."Good night, Taylor," I say and open my door."Good night, sweetheart," his voice carried into my room before I could shut the door. I wonder when I became comfortable with hearing the name 'sweetheart' from him. I hated nicknames, but fro

  • My Roommate is a Boy    TICKET TO TROUBLE

RIVERLater that evening, even though I was itching to understand what Taylor meant in the morning, I had managed to spend the day keeping the recurring voice out of my head. By the time I am done hiking up the hill, all I wish for is to taste the rice and kimchi I had last night, and even with the hospitality of the boys, I do not think my social skills could carry me successfully for one night.I enter the house, and a pot seems to be sizzling on the stove while no one is in sight. I walk up to the pot and peep in through the glass cover. Spaghetti is boiling in the pot, and I am not sure if it is supposed to be boiling for this long."What are you doing, sweetheart?""Ah!" I scream, startled by how close he is to me, and I push myself back, my legs betraying me and my body going heavily first for the floor. I close my eyes and brace myself for the impact, but the hard, cold floor never touches my skin. I feel hands holding me, and when I look up, blue eyes are staring at me. I do n

  • My Roommate is a Boy   SWEETHEART, WITH LIPSTICK

RIVER"River, the soup is ready for breakfast."Out of being startled by the knock on my door, the lip liner in my hand moves out of my lip frame and marks the skin near my mouth, and I sigh. I look at myself in the mirror and wonder what I was doing. My aunt had packed me a bag of makeup, saying I would need it in the university, even though I had said I wouldn't, but here I was trying on the makeup after watching a couple of videos on social media. However, I could not pinpoint who it was I was trying to impress. I was not going to lie to myself and say that I was doing it because I wanted to, because all of this was not a three-step makeup routine, as the videos claimed. I wipe off the mark on my chin, and the knock comes again."Aren't you coming?" he asked."Coming!" I said, making my voice firm so he could hear what I had said. I finish up the look with some eyeliner and a lip combo. I stare at myself in the mirror and resist every urge to wipe off my hard work. If I got many st

  • My Roommate is a Boy   ONE OF THE BOYS I SHOULD AVOID

RIVERI had not expected Taylor to show up here; I had sent the message to him just because it had been something my dad forced me to do when I was young, and somehow it had been ingrained into my head. "Always tell others you live with when you are going to be out late so they don't worry." I didn't think that Taylor would have been worried about me staying out until eight pm.I staggered to my feet and stared at the door. Taylor's eyes caught mine, and I saw the smirk that had been his signature grow bigger."Sweetheart?" he called and then took a step into the house, squeezing himself between the doorframe and Javier, who had not allowed him to come in yet."CXoem in? I guess," Javier said as he closed the door and turned to the room. He began picking up the pieces of clothes left on the couch, and I saw him and Matt pass a glance around. Matt cleared his throat and stumbled to his feet, and it was then I realised that I had been standing with a spoon in hand."Taylor? "We did not

  • My Roommate is a Boy   THE BOY ACROSS THE STREET

RIVER"Come on in," Javier said as he opened the door."Javier, is that you?" a voice called from one of the rooms."No, it's the spirit of Christmases past," Javier yelled back to his roommate as he rolled his eyes."Of course it has to be; I was wondering who else had keys to freely enter our apartment," he replied, and soon a boy with brown hair and gorgeous pale green eyes appeared in the doorway of the room, staring at me, who was still standing awkwardly at the door. "And of course you set me up by not telling me that we had company," he said as he took a step back and then seconds later reappeared with a shirt now covering his perfectly toned chest."I also emphasise the need for being modest in the shared space, but you don't seem to adhere to it, so I shouldn't be responsible for your nakedness in the presence of our guest," Javier countered as he gestured to me to get deeper into the house. Unlike our house that lacked flavour, I could tell that these guys both liked footbal

  • My Roommate is a Boy   OPPOSITE DOORS

RIVERI am on the bus going back home after a long day of running to attend classes. I had still not familiarised myself with the terrain of the school, so when I had to go to another building for lectures, I was quite lost. I think back to the day and the conversation I had with Lana and Elise about Arlin and his antics."I was almost too sure that he was a good boy," Lana said as she popped a roll of bread into her mouth and began chewing. "He was giving off some kind of good vibe; I guess I was wrong," she added once she had swallowed her mouthful of food. "Huh! I would have sworn that he was a gentleman; how could he think to act that way?" Elise carried on. They had both wanted to crucify me because, apparently, Arlin had gone ahead to try and smear my name. He told Elise that I had begged for a date and embarrassed him when we got to the restaurant because I found a cuter guy. If he wanted to slander my name, he should have thought of a better lie. I did not necessarily care a
