Chapter 3

Author: Incense
I curled up in agony, unable to make a sound. My belly burned as if it were on fire. Blood poured out endlessly, quickly staining the ground in front of the General's Manor red.

I reached out and grabbed the hem of Jasper's robe, begging, "Please… call a royal physician… my child…"

I had already cast everything else aside. All I wanted was for someone—anyone—to save my child.

Clutching my stomach with one hand, I vaguely remembered how he had still been moving inside me that very morning.

Now, I could feel his life slipping away at a very fast rate.

The next second, Jasper kicked my hand away without mercy. "It's too late to beg now."

Pauline stood beside him, looking down at me. "Jasper, even at a time like this, this vile woman still refuses to name her lover. She hasn't realized her mistake at all."

Jasper sneered. "A treacherous, shameless whore like you deserves to be drowned for your immoral ways. Today, you'll serve as a warning to the others. With you as an example, I'd like to see if any other woman dares to be unfaithful like you."

Two soldiers grabbed me from either side and hauled me up, tearing my wounds open even further.

I yelled, "Jasper, what are you trying to do? Let go of me! If you dare harm my child, you will regret it! You all will regret it!"

No one answered me.

Instead, they threw me onto the ground roughly and bound my hands to something hard. It wasn't until I heard the sound of hooves striking the ground right beside me that I realized that Jasper had tied me to a carriage.

"Jasper, let me go!" Panic warped my voice.

Jasper seemed pleased by the sight of my fear. "You dared betray me. This is only a public parade. What are you afraid of?"

Pauline looked at the luxurious silk clothes that were still clinging to my body. A flash of jealousy flitted across her eyes.

"Jasper, this harlot brought such disgrace upon you, yet she still has the nerve to wear clothes this expensive," she remarked indignantly.

As her words fell, Jasper drew his sword and flicked it twice. Its cold light sliced through the air.

Then, I felt a chill rush over me as my clothes slid from my body.

Gasps and obscene laughter broke free from the surrounding crowd. I tried to cover myself, but my hands were bound tight.

"Jasper, you'll regret doing this to me!" I shouted.

Shrill laughter echoed from all directions.

Jasper mounted his horse and said arrogantly, "There is no one in this world who can make me regret anything! Move!"

At his command, the horse surged forward, dragging the carriage at full speed. I was tied to it from behind. So, my entire back erupted in searing pain as it scraped against the ground from being dragged along.

The townsfolk lining the road cheered at the sight. Some even hurled stones at me.

I screamed despite myself, but my cries were swallowed by the rushing wind. Wounds tore open on my skin and got bigger as time passed. The bloody trail stretched from the General's Manor into the streets and alleys.

The pain in my belly had long since been replaced by numbness. I felt as if something was about to come out.

"No… Jasper, please stop…" I begged between sobs, my tears that were mixed with blood streaked across my entire face.

Jasper dragged me all the way from the General's Manor to the city gates, where a large crowd had already gathered to watch the spectacle. I was like a dead rat tied behind the carriage, with only the faintest breaths proving that I was still alive.

"My child…" I murmured.

Jasper dismounted his horse. Seeing my miserable state, he curved his lips into a satisfied smile.

He sneered, "This is the fate of those who betray me, Isabella. As for your bastard child, beg me properly, and perhaps I might spare him."

Hearing that, I no longer cared whether it was true or false. I begged again and again.

"Please, Jasper. I'm willing to be your slave or anything you want… Just spare my child! I'll do anything you ask!"

Jasper grabbed my hair and forced my head up. "Then repent in front of the people. Tell them exactly what sins you committed."

I murmured numbly, "I am a whore. I shouldn't have slept with another man. I disgraced the General's Manor. I am a sinner…"

Upon hearing this, Jasper was finally satisfied.

He laughed smugly and said, "Since you admit your wrongdoings, I'll spare your life. But this abomination absolutely cannot be kept alive. I'll send him to reunite with his father right now!"

The tip of his sword pointed at my swollen belly. There was no way of knowing whether my child was alive or dead.

I no longer had the strength to struggle as despair filled my eyes.

A flash of cold light passed before me, and I felt a sharp pain below my waist. At the same time, a piercing voice suddenly rang out.

My expression softened slightly. "Please sit."A maid brought over a chair, but Agnes didn't move. "I'm unworthy of being your mother-in-law, Your Majesty.""Then, why have you come today?" I asked.Jasper blurted desperately, "Mother, save me!"Agnes bowed and said, "I have come to ask Your Majesty for one thing."My gaze chilled slightly. "Speak."I knew the General's Manor possessed a token of unconditional pardon bestowed by the late king. They had always kept it in their private chapel. If Agnes showed it to beg for Jasper to be released, there would be nothing I could do.Agnes said steadily, "My son has committed heinous crimes. I beg His Majesty and Her Majesty not to show mercy. You need not relent because of the past contributions of the past generals.""Mother?" Jasper stared at her in disbelief, unable to accept that she would abandon him so mercilessly.I, too, was momentarily stunned. But when my eyes fell on her slightly misshapen arm, understanding dawned insta

I let out a soft laugh. "Pauline, you have a young and promising general like Jasper so utterly devoted to you. Isn't that enough for you?"At my words, Pauline looked at me with open contempt. "Isabella, you're the Queen now. Of course you can say something like this so callously. Jasper may look young and promising, but isn't he just living off his father's legacy? "He got to where he is today with the foundation his father laid down. Does he have even a single military achievement to his own name? If I had been born the legitimate daughter, forget being a general's wife—the position of Queen should have been mine!"I gently rubbed my fingers together with a faint smile playing at my lips. Only after venting did Pauline belatedly sense that something was wrong."Isabella, why did you summon me here? Where is Jasper? What did you do to him?" she finally asked.Thinking of the soldiers who had been executed in the dungeon, fear crept onto her face. She hurriedly said, "It wasn't

When Mother's body was to be buried, Father told me that she was of a lowly status and was unworthy of being in the Slade family's official records. He had also said that she was even less worthy of being buried in the Slades' cemetery.I never imagined that after so many years of marriage and even after bearing him children, Mother would end up in such a miserable state. The other members of the Slade family denied me at every turn as well, and there was nothing I could do.In the end, I could only take Mother's body with me back to the General's Manor. But Agnes put Jasper first and was concerned that he might return at any moment. She said Mother's corpse would pollute our living environment and refused to let me enter the manor, no matter what I said. With no other path left, I went up the mountain to the church there. Ever since I was little, I had seen Mother go there to pray every single day. She had been so devout. I was sure the God she was praying to wouldn't just turn a

When I opened my eyes, the first thing I saw was an opulent room.I slowly turned my head and saw a palace maid beside me, wringing a cloth in her hands. She turned and met my gaze. Then, her face lit up with joy."Her Majesty is awake! I'll inform His Majesty at once!"Before long, Nathaniel hurried in and sat beside the bed. "Isabella, are you feeling any better?"At the sight of him, tears immediately streamed down my face. "Your Majesty… I never thought I'd still have the chance to see you again…"At those words, Nathaniel's heart melted. "Don't worry. I will not spare anyone who harmed you and our child."Hearing this, I reached out and touched my flat abdomen. The pain from realizing my loss ran so deep that it stole my breath. From the very beginning, my marriage into the General's Manor had been a lie. I had finally broken free from it and found another path for myself. I even had a child of my own. Why was Jasper so unwilling to let me go?I sobbed, "Your Majesty, Jasp

The royal physicians arrived quickly. When they saw the injuries on my body, they all sucked in sharp breaths.Nathaniel pressed urgently, "How is she? Can she still be saved?"One of the physicians replied tremblingly, "It is fortunate that Her Majesty had been taking good care of herself for the past few months. Otherwise, she would not have held on until Your Majesty arrived."Nathaniel's heart missed a beat. He asked instinctively, "What about the child?"The physicians fell silent instantly, exchanging uneasy glances. No one dared to speak.Nathaniel looked at my collapsed belly and said in disbelief, "Where is the child?"Boris wept as he lifted a bundle of cloth, carrying something small inside. "Your Majesty, the Crown Prince is gone!"Nathaniel couldn't believe his ears. His shaking hand hovered above the lifeless infant. He couldn't bring himself to lift the cloth for a long while.Boris wailed, "Your Majesty, I am sorry for your loss!"Jasper and Pauline were still

"The King has arrived!"Jasper froze mid-motion.Everyone's gaze shifted to the golden carriage behind him. One by one, they dropped to their knees and cried out, "Greetings, Your Majesty!"Jasper threw down his sword as well and knelt to pay his respects. The king, Nathaniel Stuart, sat in the carriage with an unreadable expression. Only the chief esquire, Boris Banner, who was at his side, had a visibly anxious look on his face.Jasper assumed Nathaniel was displeased because he had delayed entering the palace to report for duty. He hurriedly apologized for his tardiness. "Your Majesty, I have failed to enter the palace at once to report my return. I am sorry about that. You see, a grave matter has occurred in my household, and I was forced to deal with it first."Boris' heart sank. Normally, at this hour, the shadow guards would enter the palace to report what I had eaten for my midday meal. But today, there had been no reports at all. When their men were sent to check the
