Scarlett

Adrian’s mansion, some years ago…

The atmosphere in the study was tense, thick with unspoken expectations and quiet disappointment. The golden chandeliers cast a soft glow, but it did nothing to warm the coldness in the room.

Dorothy sat elegantly on the leather chair, her posture straight, her expression composed, but her eyes were sharp.

Adrian stood a few feet away, his back partly turned to her, a glass of untouched whiskey resting in his hand. He leaned back, fingers steepled.

"You have to start thinking seriously, Adrian, this is a crucial consideration." Dorothy said, breaking the silence. Her voice was calm, but firm enough to leave no room for misinterpretation.

Adrian didn’t respond immediately.

"She’s my wife, Mother,” he finally said, his tone controlled, though strained. "Not a business contract to be terminated at will."

Dorothy’s lips pressed into a thin line. "Then perhaps you should remind yourself what kind of family you were born into."

He turned to face her now, his jaw tight.

"This family has a name. A legacy," she continued. "And that legacy requires an heir."

Adrian’s grip on the glass tightened slightly.

"Scarlett has had years," Dorothy added, her voice sharpening. "Years, Adrian. And yet....nothing."

The word echoed heavier than it should have.

A flicker of pain crossed Adrian’s eyes, but he masked it quickly.

"We don’t know if it’s her fault," he said quietly.

Dorothy let out a soft, almost dismissive laugh. "Then whose fault would it be? Yours? Are you saying you're sterile?" she challenged, raising a brow.

"No, mother."

"Then whose fault? because you keep defending her."

The question hung between them like a blade.

Adrian said nothing.

Dorothy leaned forward slightly, her tone lowering, more deliberate now. "Love is not enough to sustain a family like ours. You need a woman who can give you a child. A son. Kids."

Adrian’s expression hardened. "I’m not replacing my wife."

Dorothy didn’t flinch.

"Then you will lose everything this family stands for," she replied coldly. "Because whether you like it or not, Scarlett is failing in her duty."

Those words cut deeper than intended.

Adrian exhaled slowly, running a hand through his hair. "She’s trying."

"Trying is not the same as succeeding," Dorothy said, her voice final.

Silence filled the room again, heavy, suffocating. Then, without hesitation, she delivered the blow.

"You should divorce her."

The words landed like thunder.

Outside the slightly ajar door, I stood frozen.

I had come with a small, hopeful smile, intending to call him to breakfast, but instead, I found myself rooted to the spot, my world collapsing with every word I had just heard.

Divorce.

Because I couldn’t give him a child.

My fingers trembled as they clutched the edge of the wall for support. My breathing became shallow, uneven, as if the air had suddenly grown too heavy.

Inside, Adrian’s silence stretched on.

I waited desperately, painfully for him to say something. To defend me. To choose me.

But the silence was louder than any words. A tear slipped down my cheek. Then another.

Quickly, I covered my mouth to suppress a sob, my shoulders shaking as the reality sank in.

I didn’t stay to hear more.

Step by step, I backed away from the door, my heart breaking in quiet pieces with every movement. The mansion that once felt like home now felt unbearably cold.

And as I turned and walked down the long hallway, tears streaming freely down my face. It felt like I had just lost my place in Adrian’s life, long before he ever said the words.

End of Flashback

****

My chest burned with anger.

"There was no truth!" I snapped. "I never cheated on him. I did nothing wrong to receive this ill treatment from you Dorothy Mattson."

Dorothy tilted her head, studying me like I was something mildly amusing.

"That doesn’t really matter now, does it?"

The coldness in her voice made my skin crawl.

She stopped a few feet away from me.

"You signed the divorce papers," she said calmly.

"It’s over."

A painful silence filled the room.

I lifted my chin slightly.

"I’m leaving tonight."

"Good."

The word came out instantly.

Dorothy’s eyes glittered with satisfaction.

"That’s exactly what I wanted."

My heart skipped.

"What do you mean?"

She stepped closer, lowering her voice.

"Let me make something very clear, Scarlett."

The way she said my name sent chills down my spine.

"You will leave this city."

My brows furrowed. "I already plan to."

Dorothy’s smile turned colder.

"Not just tonight."

Her eyes darkened.

"Forever."

My pulse quickened.

"You don’t get to control my life."

"Oh, but I do," she said softly.

Her gaze flicked toward the front door.

"If you stay in this city, I can make sure the scandal tonight follows you everywhere."

My stomach twisted.

"No company will hire you."

"No business will work with you."

Her voice dropped to a whisper.

"You’ll be known as the woman who cheated on Adrian Mattson."

I felt like someone had punched me in the chest.

She was right. With Adrian’s influence, my reputation could be destroyed completely.

Dorothy watched my reaction with clear satisfaction.

"You’re smart," she said. "You know how this works."

I swallowed hard.

"What do you want?"

Her answer came instantly. "Disappear."

The word hung heavily in the air.

"Leave the city tonight," she continued. "And never come back."

"And if I don’t?" I asked quietly.

Dorothy’s eyes hardened.

"Then I will make sure your life becomes a living nightmare."

Silence filled the apartment. My hand slowly moved to my stomach protectively but Dorothy didn't notice or if she did, she didn't comment.

I had already lost everything tonight. My marriage, reputation and my home. But now there was something more important than all of that.

My baby.

I couldn’t risk raising my child in a city where Adrian’s family could destroy us.

I looked up at Dorothy again.

"Fine," I said softly.

Her lips curved slightly. "I’m glad you’re being reasonable."

"I’ll leave tonight."

Her smile widened. "Good girl."

I turned away from her and walked back toward the bedroom.

My hands felt steadier now. The decision had already been made. Within thirty minutes, my suitcase was packed. I only packed the essentials. My clothes, passport, a few personal items.

Nothing else mattered.

When I returned to the living room, Dorothy was still there, watching me.

"Goodbye," I said quietly.

She simply nodded.

As I walked toward the door, she added one final sentence.

"Trust me, Scarlett."

Her voice was smooth as silk.

"My son will never look for you."

My chest tightened but I didn’t respond.

I stepped out of the apartment and closed the door behind me. The sound echoed down the hallway like the end of a chapter.

By sunrise, I would be gone.

And Adrian Mattson would never know that somewhere in the world.

His child was growing inside me.

Scarlett Something felt wrong and I couldn't explain it. I couldn't point to one specific thing and say, that's the problem. But ever since the reporters had shown up outside my house days ago, I'd been unable to shake the feeling. The feeling that eyes were constantly following me, they were studying every move I made. As though someone was standing just outside my field of vision, patiently waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. I hated how paranoid it made me feel. I hated how every unknown phone number made my stomach tighten. Most of all, I hated that deep down, I knew I wasn't imagining it. Someone was doing this. Someone was deliberately trying to disrupt my life. I had a feeling things were only getting started. I forced a smile as I sat in the school auditorium. The large room buzzed with excited chatter. Children ran between rows of chairs while parents laughed and took photographs. Teachers moved around trying and mostly failing to keep everyon

Avery I hated her. I hated everything about her. The feeling burned through me like acid as I stared at the photographs scattered across my coffee table. Scarlett. Adrian. The twins. A perfect little family. A perfect little reunion. My nails dug into my palms as I picked up one of the photographs. Scarlett was smiling. The kind of smile that came from genuine happiness. The kind of smile I hadn't seen on Adrian's face in years. Adrian stood beside her, his focus wasn't at the camera but at Scarlett, my doom. As if she was the only person in the world worth looking at. The sight made my stomach twist. Every photograph felt like a slap across my face. Every smile felt like a cruel reminder. I had spent five years, loving Adrian, waiting for him, supporting him, defending him. Standing beside him through business scandals, family drama, and endless stress. Five years believing that eventually he would see me. Eventually he would choose me. Eventually he would realiz

  • My Ruthless Billionaire Ex Wants Me Back   Chapter 34

Adrian The silence was unbearable. "You're flirting." Liam looked entirely too proud of himself. As if he had just solved an impossible mystery. As if he deserved some kind of award for exposing us. Beside him, Lily gasped dramatically, placing both hands over her mouth like she'd just witnessed the biggest scandal in history. My eyes immediately found Scarlett and that was a mistake. Because her face had turned a shade of red I'd never seen before. Her eyes widened. Her lips parted. Judging by the look she was currently giving our son, she was debating whether grounding him until adulthood would be considered excessive. "Excuse me?" she finally managed. Liam shrugged. "What?" "Nothing is happening." "Uh-huh." I blinked. Where exactly had a five-year-old learned sarcasm? Because it certainly wasn't from me. At least, I hoped not. Lily walked further into the office and folded her arms. "You were looking at each other." Scarlett looked horrified.

  • My Ruthless Billionaire Ex Wants Me Back   Chapter 33

Scarlett I couldn't stop thinking about it. Hours had passed, yet the memory refused to leave me alone. I had tried everything. I buried myself in work and even forced myself to focus on tasks that normally demanded my full attention. None of it worked. No matter how hard I tried, my mind kept wandering back to Adrian's bedroom. Back to the way his eyes had darkened when he looked at me. The way he moaned my name as he touched himself. This was so clear that he hadn't slept with Avery, he wanted me. He needed me. My mind went back to the tension that had wrapped itself around us like a living thing. I groaned and shut my laptop harder than necessary. I wasn't some lovestruck teenager daydreaming about her first crush. I was a grown woman. A successful businesswoman who managed an international company. A mother raising two incredible children. A woman who had survived heartbreak, betrayal, divorce, and years of rebuilding herself from the ground up. So why was I

  • My Ruthless Billionaire Ex Wants Me Back   Chapter 32

Scarlett The mansion felt unusually quiet after the twins left for school. For the first time in what felt like forever, there was no laughter echoing through the hallways. No cartoon theme songs blasting from the television. No Lily asking endless questions about everything she saw. No Liam passionately explaining why dinosaurs were superior to every other creature that had ever existed. Just silence. A strange, unfamiliar silence. I stood in the kitchen holding my coffee mug and realized how much life the twins brought into every room they entered. The house felt bigger without them. Emptier and lonelier. Even Dorothy had disappeared into her office for the morning, while Adrian had spent most of breakfast handling phone calls and business meetings. The entire mansion felt suspended in a strange calm. A calm that gave me far too much time to think. Especially when most of my thoughts lately seemed to revolve around one person. Adrian. I sighed softly

  • My Ruthless Billionaire Ex Wants Me Back   Chapter 31

Scarlett I couldn't sleep. No matter how many times I closed my eyes. No matter how many times I turned over in bed and tried to force myself to relax, seep simply refused to come. The guest bedroom felt unfamiliar. The silence felt unfamiliar. Even the air felt unfamiliar. Everything about this place reminded me of a version of myself that no longer existed. Five years ago, I had walked out of this mansion with a broken heart and a suitcase full of shattered dreams. I had promised myself I would never return. Never. Yet somehow life had brought me right back to the place where everything had fallen apart, back under Adrian Mattson's roof. Back inside the house where I had once been his wife. Back inside the walls that still held memories I wasn't ready to face. I released a slow breath and sat up. The digital clock beside the bed glowed softly in the darkness. 2:17 a.m. Great. Another sleepless night. I rubbed my face tiredly before slipping out of bed, maybe a glass

  • My Ruthless Billionaire Ex Wants Me Back   Chapter 16

Like something invisible had already started connecting them before any of us were ready fo

  • My Ruthless Billionaire Ex Wants Me Back   Chapter 15

Scarlett Something felt wrong the second I woke up that morning. It wasn’t logical. Nothing had happened yet. No calls. No messages. No emergencies waiting for me the moment I opened my eyes, and still, the feeling sat heavily in my chest like a quiet warning I couldn’t ignore. I felt restles

Adrian Routine. That was the key to all of this. Not force, nor pressure. Not showing up at Scarlett’s house demanding access to children who didn’t even know the truth yet. If I pushed too hard, she would shut every door in my face before I even had the chance to step through them properly

  • My Ruthless Billionaire Ex Wants Me Back   Chapter 13

Scarlett I shouldn’t have opened the gate. The thought circled endlessly in my mind long after Adrian’s car disappeared down the street. Even after the sound of the engine faded completely. Even after the silence returned to the house. I still stood there near the entrance, unmoving, my fin
