Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Mint Latte
Jay glanced back at me.

"Julia's leg is injured. I'll take her first. Wait for me in the consultation room," he said, then strode away, carrying Julia in his arms.

Leaning against his shoulder, she looked at me and flashed a triumphant smile.

I wasn't surprised by his choice.

The so-called devotion he had faked for me collapsed the moment Julia appeared.

And yet he still thought he hid it well.

I couldn't stop the mocking curl of my lips.

Turning away, I forced myself toward the consultation room.

The doctor warned me to keep calm. My body was fragile after the miscarriage. Too much grief would only make things worse.

That was when a message popped up on my phone.

Julia: [The moment I beckon, he comes back to me. What do you have to compete with?]

The loved are always fearless.

But I wasn't going to compete. I admitted defeat.

Pocketing my phone, I went alone to collect my medicine. Jay never came. Not a single call, not a single text.

This time, I didn't wait.

Back home, my screen lit up with a message from my father: [Your visa is ready. Once your records are canceled, you can leave anytime.]

I replied with a single word: [Okay.]

While packing the last of my luggage, I happened to see Julia's latest post.

A candlelit dinner for two. Hands clasped across the table. On one long, slender finger gleamed a ring.

I recognized Jay's hand instantly.

Without hesitation, I tapped "like."

A moment later, his call came through. His voice overflowed with apology.

"Emma, I'm sorry. I meant to drop Julia home first, then go back to the hospital for you. But her stomach started hurting, so I took her out to eat instead."

Before he could finish, a woman's voice drifted clearly through the receiver.

"Jay, who are you talking to?"

"Work," he answered quickly, muffling the phone—yet I heard it all.

Then came his gentle coaxing. "Emma, just rest. If your stomach hurts, take your medicine. I'll explain everything once I'm back."

I had no interest in his lies anymore. I hung up.

After resting through the night, my strength returned. I went to the company the next morning to resign.

My colleagues were warm and insistent, clamoring for a farewell meal.

Unfamiliar with restaurants, I chose one Jay had often brought me to with good food and a decent atmosphere.

Halfway through, I excused myself for the restroom.

And there, I overheard a familiar voice—Julia's—speaking with her friend.

The friend sounded worried. "You've secretly gotten back with Billy. If Jay finds out…"

Julia replied, utterly unbothered, "He wouldn't believe it even if he did. He's my biggest simp. One wave of my hand, and he abandoned the woman who'd stayed by his side for seven years without hesitation. Of course, he'll forgive me.

"Besides, if you don't tell and I don't tell, who will know the baby in my belly belongs to Billy?"

I sat frozen in the stall, waiting until their voices faded, then finally switched off my phone's recording mode.

A simp who grovels in love never meets a good end.

I was one. And so was Jay.

Back in the private room, I saw everyone had nearly finished eating. I rose to my feet, ready to settle the bill.

Jay turned to me, his expression full of helpless pleading."Emma, I love you. I can marry you. I can make our relationship public. Just forgive me, please? As long as you come back, I'll do anything. I know you're only with him to spite me. You've succeeded. I surrender. I really can't live without you!""Jay."I cut him off without hesitation."I once liked you. But that was only because I had never been loved properly before. I mistook the scraps of kindness you tossed me for love."But now I have something real, something good. And I can tell you, without the slightest hesitation… I don't love you anymore. In fact, the sight of you disgusts me.""I—" He stood there, shattered, words choking in his throat. He wanted to speak, but nothing came out.I went on, "We've known each other for so many years. I hope we can part with at least a shred of dignity. Don't make me despise you any more than I already do."With that, I no longer spared him a glance. I took Chuck's hand and w

Julia gave a bleak, broken smile. At last, she understood it wasn't Emma's love that had been a joke, but her own years of self-righteous devotion were nothing more than a carefully woven lie."You want to know where Emma is? Take me to the hospital, and I'll tell you!"…Whether Jay regretted it or not no longer mattered to me. I didn't care, and I refused to care.In my world, his name had been erased for good.My life now was peaceful and fulfilling: language classes, photography lessons, feeding stray cats and dogs, and strolling through the park in the evening breeze. Everything felt unhurried and serene."Emma?"Chuck's voice pulled me from my feigned nap."What is it?" I asked curiously. He handed me a sketch. On the paper was a radiant young girl, her hair dancing with the wind as she lounged lazily on a deck chair. Sunlight poured over her face, gilding her features with a soft golden glow."This is… me?""Who else could it be?" he teased.I smiled as I accepted the

Like a moth to a flame, I had once thrown myself headlong into the warmth I craved, only to forget that such devotion was always one-sided. The fire never yearned for the moth.Because I was never good at socializing, I found daily interactions difficult, yet in other ways, my solitude made life easier, even more comfortable. One afternoon, while photographing at Richter National Park, I came across a man sketching quietly by the lake. He had clear features, a tall, upright frame, and a warmth in his bearing that drew the eye. When he noticed my lingering gaze, he smiled. "I see you here often, taking photos. And every day you feed the stray cats and talk to them."Heat rushed to my cheeks as he laughed, repeating the little details I never thought anyone had noticed."Hello, I'm Chuck Bennet.""Emma Bourne."Turned out, Chuck was a fellow countryman. In a foreign land, it felt rare and precious to meet someone from home. An easy sense of familiarity settled between us. We exch

Julia watched Jay, frantic as he redialed my number again and again, her anxiety spiraling into fury. With one violent sweep, she sent everything on the table crashing to the floor, shattering into pieces."Jay, what the hell? Today is our engagement ceremony, and you run off to chase that bitch instead?"Her voice trembled with rage. "Do you think I don't know? You were with her for more than two years, and yet you kept telling me you loved me. Do you even know what love is? I told you I'd let it go, that I wouldn't hold it against you—and now you humiliate me in front of everyone!"His gaze fixed on her, cold and sharp, eyes dark with scrutiny. "The child in your belly… it's not mine, is it?"For a brief second, embarrassment flickered across Julia's face, but she quickly recovered."You're talking nonsense. How could it not be yours?"Jay didn't bother arguing. He simply pressed play on the recorder. Her own voice filled the room—her secret conversation with her best friend

At last, I could leave. For the first time in days, my eyes lit up, and a rare smile curved my lips.Me: [Thank you, Dad.]I placed the recording and the abortion report on the table as my parting gift, then pulled my suitcase toward the airport.Jay's proposal was being livestreamed, playing on the screens even at the terminal. Every detail mirrored the scene I once dreamed of for myself… but it wasn't mine.Jay appeared in a perfectly tailored suit, his eyes brimming with joy. He dropped to one knee before Julia."Julia, will you marry me?"Julia's lips curved in a triumphant smile. With a coy softness, she answered, "I will."Fireworks burst, confetti rained, and cheers filled the air.I watched his radiant smile and found myself smiling too.It was good. He could chase his true love, and I could chase my freedom. Two paths, forever parted, each finding peace on their own.I sent him a message and boarded a one-way journey with no return. At the engagement party, as Jay

I hadn't expected to run into Julia the moment I stepped out.Her face wore a warm, friendly smile as she said to me, "What a surprise, you came to this restaurant too. I thought it was a bit of a hidden gem. Jay picked this place to celebrate my twentieth birthday. I love the food here. I heard he spent over a month deciding on it."Though we both lived under the Bourne family's roof, I had nothing to say to her.I was about to leave when she suddenly grabbed my hand, her tone edged with mockery."Emma, you do have good taste. But this restaurant isn't really for you. Coming here once in a while is fine, but don't embarrass yourself by clinging where you don't belong."I knew what she meant—her veiled warning for me to stay away from Jay.I was about to shake her off in irritation when, to my shock, she suddenly staggered backward and fell hard to the ground.I froze. Before I could react, Jay came rushing over.Without a word, his hand struck across my face.A fiery sting sp
