Chapter 1

“Edwin, if you really didn’t want me to go, you could have just said so. Why did you pour that stuff into my water...?”

Evan Lowe trembled from head to toe, sobbing so hard he could barely catch his breath.

“Mom, Dad, if Edwin can’t stand having me around, then I won’t go on this trip. I don’t want to be an eyesore.”

The more pitifully he cried, the more distressed Mom became. Her eyes reddened as she snatched up a bottle of disinfectant from the entryway cabinet and hurled it at my face.

“Look how considerate Evan is! Then look at you! You’re so vicious! How did I ever give birth to something like you?”

The plastic bottle struck my cheek hard enough to make it throb. I clenched my teeth as the metallic taste of blood spread through my mouth.

Whenever I opened my cursed mouth, someone was bound to bleed.

Yet during the six months since I returned to the Lowe family, they had treated me well.

I had always been sensitive to the cold, so Mom knitted sweaters for me herself and piled extra blankets onto my bed.

Whenever Dad came home from work, he would bring me a warm cinnamon roll from the bakery around the corner, saying it had been my favorite when I was little.

Even my sister, Sharon Lowe, with her fiery temper, slipped me a bank card on payday and told me to spend whatever I wanted.

To hold on to this hard-won family affection, I kept my mouth firmly shut.

I was afraid that if I said a word, this family would fall apart.

Sharon came out of the bathroom, snatched my train ticket from my hand, and tore it to pieces.

“Evan can barely bring himself to step on an ant, yet you were vicious enough to try to poison him with disinfectant!”

She flung the scraps in my face. “Since you can’t stand seeing anyone else happy, you can stay home over the weekend! You’re not going anywhere!”

She turned to Mom and Dad. “Dad, change the flight bookings. We’ll take Evan with us and leave this country bumpkin at home to reflect on himself!”

Dad shoved me into the spare bedroom with a stony expression, then locked the door from the outside.

“Without my permission, no one is to give him anything to eat. Let him go hungry for a few days so he’ll learn his lesson.”

As I listened to their cheerful voices fade away outside the door, I sank onto the cold floor.

For the entire long weekend, I was locked inside the windowless spare bedroom.

I used the two downtown storefronts as collateral to secure a bank loan.Within six months, I transformed that tiny takeaway in my old neighborhood into a thriving restaurant chain known across the region. On the day the flagship restaurant opened, I drove out to a shared apartment complex in the suburbs.Wendy still had a coin-sized scar on her forehead. She was sitting in the cold wind, washing vegetables for someone.I walked over and placed an employment contract in her hands."Wendy, my restaurant needs a front-of-house manager. Room and board included, with a monthly salary of $4,000. Would you like to come work for me?"She froze. The moment she recognized me, tears spilled from her eyes. Her hands trembled as she held the contract."I will work for you for the rest of my life!"After leaving that filthy, toxic household behind, my business continued to grow, and I finally learned to live freely.Even my notorious jinx had changed. One day, a delivery driver came to my restauran

I looked at Sharon’s pathetic face, smeared with tears and snot, and let out a cold laugh.I casually grabbed the pressure-washer hose from the doorway and twisted open the valve.A freezing jet of water blasted Sharon in the face, sending her tumbling twice before she slammed onto the curb."Go cry somewhere else. Don’t dirty my floor!"Mom screamed in fright and scrambled over to help her.I dropped the hose, went back inside, and pulled down the shop’s metal security gate.Half a month later, the Lowe company was unable to cover the $1.4 million hole left by Evan’s drug spending. Its cash flow collapsed completely, and the company declared bankruptcy.Loan sharks showed up at the Lowe mansion every day, pounding on the gates and leaving threats scrawled across the walls. One evening, just after I closed up shop, my dad, Gregory Lowe, stopped me beneath a dim streetlamp. His hair had turned completely white, and his back was bent. There wasn’t a trace left of the authority he had on

Half a month later. The Lowe family had become notorious because of Evan’s scandal. The news that the family’s adopted son used drugs, slept around, and had syphilis became the joke of every social gathering.Their business partners canceled their contracts one after another, while the banks came knocking to collect the $1.4 million shortfall.I moved back to my old neighborhood, rented a small storefront, and opened a takeaway serving my signature slow-cooked meats—the one thing I knew how to do best.Business was shockingly good. I was on my feet from morning to night, earning every penny honestly and working for it with my own hands. One afternoon, I was busy boxing up an order of my signature spicy chicken wings when a black Maybach pulled up outside the shop.Mom climbed out with Sharon supporting her.In only half a month, she looked ten years older. Half her hair had turned white, and exhaustion hollowed out her face.Sharon’s eyes were deeply sunken. When Mom saw me standing be

"Stop! How dare you attack him in front of the police!"The two officers rushed forward, wrenched Dad’s arms behind his back, and forcibly pulled him away.Evan’s nose was streaming with blood. His once-neatly styled hair hung in disarray, and he lay sprawled on the hospital bed like a corpse."Evan Lowe, this is no longer just about drug use."The officer in charge drew the handcuffs from his belt, his voice cold as ice."Based on the messages on your phone, you’re suspected of multiple criminal transactions. You’re being placed under criminal detention."The icy handcuffs snapped shut around his unbandaged left wrist.Evan completely panicked. Despite the agony from his severed fingers, he began struggling like a madman."I’m not going to the police station! I’m sick! I have late-stage syphilis! You can’t arrest me!"Sharon! Help me! They corrupted me!"He crawled desperately toward Sharon, trying to grab her pant leg. However, Sharon recoiled as if she had seen a ghost and stumbled

The treatment-room doors opened, and Evan was wheeled out, his face deathly pale, before being transferred to a regular ward. The two police officers followed close behind and strode into the room.Sharon, together with Mom and Dad, seemed to snap out of a dream and hurried after them.I pushed myself up on my numb knees and walked to the ward entrance, watching coldly from the doorway. On the bed, Evan had just come out of anesthesia. He stared at his heavily bandaged right hand and silently shed tears. He visibly flinched when he saw the police enter. The officer in charge showed his badge, his voice stern."Evan Lowe, your blood test shows that you’ve been using the new drug xylazine for a long time."We’re questioning you as part of an official investigation. Where did you get the drugs?"Extreme fear flashed through Evan’s eyes. But he had been playing the innocent victim for more than a decade. After only one second of panic, his tears began streaming down his face.He dropped to

"Don’t touch me. Your hand is so badly infected, the bones are probably already rotting. If a few fingers accidentally snapped off and landed on the floor, you’d only accuse me of breaking them."Sharon exploded, pointing at me as she cursed."What the hell are you talking about? Evan was only trying to help you up, and you still dare to curse him—"Before she could finish, Evan let out a piercing scream."Ah! My hand hurts!"Two sharp cracks rang out.His bandaged index and middle fingers snapped clean off at the base. The two severed fingers, slick with pus and blood, slid free and landed with a wet slap on the white consent form.Evan stared at the fingers in horror and began screaming hysterically."Ahhh! My fingers fell off!"He flung his hand around in panic, trying to pick up the severed fingers from the table. The moment he applied pressure, his ring finger gave a sharp crack and dropped to the floor."Evan!"Mom rolled her eyes back and fainted straight onto the sofa.Dad’s fa
