Chapter 2

Author: Cash Machine
Lucas still wasn't satisfied. "Signing a pledge isn't enough. Cancel all of Daphne's upcoming orders right now."

"Sure."

I opened the campus gig platform. Daphne's status was so painfully straightforward that it almost broke my heart.

[Desperate for money. Trying to survive. Urgent.]

Below it was a list of her bookings for the next two weeks: buying me breakfast before morning classes, helping me organize the mistakes I'd made on practice tests during lunch break, saving me a spot in the shade during PE, taking my basketball shoes to the gym after school, and practicing tennis with me on weekends.

Daphne had originally charged just 40 dollars for tennis practice. But she thought my skills were so terrible that practicing with me would ruin her mood, so she'd stubbornly raised the price to 100 dollars.

Right in front of Lucas, I canceled every order, one by one.

[Order withdrawn.]

[Exclusive booking privileges disabled.]

[Outstanding balance payment suspended.]

Lucas' tense expression finally softened. He thought he'd freed Daphne from my clutches.

To me, it looked more like a termination notice.

Suddenly, a guy nearby raised his hand. "Hey, Dominic, do you still need someone to save you a seat? Daphne charges 40 dollars. I'll do it for 35 dollars."

Another student immediately chimed in, "I'll do it for 32 dollars. I'll even wipe down your desk for free."

Lucas stared at them in disbelief. "How can you willingly subject yourselves to this kind of humiliation just for money?"

The first guy scratched his head. "It's just saving a seat. What's so humiliating about that? My mom makes me get up early to buy groceries, and she doesn't even pay me a cent."

Someone nearby burst out laughing.

Lucas's face turned pale.

I waved the students off. "I'm not hiring anyone for now. I don't want someone else getting all worked up on your behalf again."

Lucas carefully tucked away the pledge, his eyes bright with the satisfaction of victory. "When Daphne comes back, she'll thank me. Starting today, she won't have to put up with your attitude just to cover her living expenses."

I glanced at the remaining balance on her campus card: 1.08 dollars.

Fair enough. She wouldn't have to put up with my attitude anymore. She'd just have to answer to her bank balance instead.

…

The next morning, I'd barely stepped into the classroom when every conversation around me came to an abrupt halt.

The guy in front of me hurriedly flipped his phone facedown. He looked at me as if I were some criminal whose crimes had just been exposed on the evening news.

I set down my backpack. "What? Did the campus forum convict me overnight?"

My deskmate slid his phone over to me.

Lucas had posted another lengthy exposé in the early hours of the morning.

[Who will save Daphne Wilson from being conditioned by money?]

This time, he'd attached plenty of photos: Daphne carrying my basketball shoes, waiting in line to buy me cake, and picking up my jacket beside the sports field. One photo even showed her kneeling at the foot of the steps, her head bowed as she tied my shoelaces.

Lucas had added a special caption: [She used to be so proud. Now, for a few hundred bucks, she's forced to bow her head to Dominic Harris in front of everyone.]

The comments section was ablaze with outrage.

[So having money means you can treat people like dirt?]

[Does making the campus bell kneel and serve him give him some kind of sick thrill?]

[Dominic is absolutely shameless. He's taking advantage of her misfortune to force her into some twisted romance.]

[I feel so bad for Daphne. She used to be too proud to even read the love letters people sent her. Now she has to put up with this just to eat.]

…

Lucas approached me, his eyes red. "Have you seen it? I'm not the only one who thinks you're in the wrong."

I looked at the photos and nodded. "Yeah, I've seen it."

His expression relaxed. "So you're willing to apologize now?"

"No. I've just figured out why the school's average literature grade never improves," I said flatly.

Lucas' smile froze.

Just then, someone at the back of the classroom suddenly shouted, "Wait a second! I found Daphne's gig account!"

While I recovered from my foot injury, our parents put Daphne in charge of driving me to and from school. Every morning, she brought breakfast to my classroom, and after school, she carried my backpack. At first, the whole school found our arrangement fascinating. But eventually, everyone realized there was nothing heartwarming about our sibling relationship. All we ever did was get on each other's nerves.I opened the breakfast bag and frowned. "Why isn't there any sugar in my latte?"Daphne tossed a straw onto my desk. "The doctor told you to cut back on sugar."I rummaged through the bag again. "Why are there only egg whites?"She wiped the corner of her mouth and replied without the slightest hint of shame, "I ate the yolks."I looked up at her. "Are you seriously charging me a commission just for bringing me breakfast?"Daphne leaned against my desk and scoffed. "Delivery fee."My deskmate, however, looked thoroughly envious. "Your sister even remembers that you don't eat

The next day, the school released an official statement. All allegations of so-called "financial bullying" were formally withdrawn. My disciplinary record was cleared, and every related post on the campus forum was deleted. The school also issued a public apology on its official website and notice boards. The most prominent line read: [After verification, we have confirmed that Daphne Wilson voluntarily accepted all orders. No coercion, control, or other misconduct was involved.]The comment section was quickly flooded with reactions from students.[Translation: Daphne genuinely wanted to earn that money.][Another translation: Lucas ruined her livelihood.][Is Boss Dominic still hiring? I'd like to put my dignity under monthly management.]After reading the statement, Daphne had only one thing on her mind. "Where's my 350 dollars?"The platform released her payment that same day, along with an additional 25 dollars in compensation for the delay.Daphne stared at the notificat

The police quickly recovered the records Lucas had deleted. In addition to the fake text message, they found several messages he'd sent to Richard.Lucas: [Dominic Harris is already on his way to the outskirts of town.]Lucas: [As long as he can't make it back in time, the disciplinary action will be approved without a hitch.]Lucas: [Once Daphne gets her freedom back, she'll definitely thank me.]The evidence shattered Lucas' last shred of hope. His face was deathly pale, and tears streamed down his cheeks. "I was just trying to help Daphne. I never expected things to turn out like this."Daphne didn't even spare him a glance. "Don't use me as an excuse. I never asked you to do any of this."The principal held a brief, hushed discussion with several school administrators before stepping onto the stage. "After an emergency review, the school has decided to revoke the disciplinary action against Dominic Harris and withdraw the findings of the so-called financial bullying investiga

The police arrived at the gymnasium shortly afterward. After reviewing the text message and system logs, they confiscated Lucas' phone and the computer from the student council office. They also instructed everyone involved to remain on-site and cooperate with the investigation.Lucas, who had insisted just moments earlier that it was all a joke, fell completely silent. The gymnasium doors opened again. Our mother hurried inside, with our father close on her heels. Rainwater still clung to his coat. The moment our mother saw me covered in mud, she stopped dead in her tracks. "Dominic!"She crouched in front of me and reached for my knee, but hesitated for fear of hurting me. "How did you scrape your hand? Can you still move your foot?"I lifted my swollen right foot slightly. "Not really."Her eyes immediately reddened. She turned to Daphne. "Is this how you look after your little brother?"Caught off guard by the scolding, Daphne protested, "I just got back from my competitio

The tears hadn't even fallen from Lucas' eyes before his expression froze. "Daphne, it's not about the money. It's about your dignity."Daphne nodded. "My dignity is worth 350 dollars. When are you paying me back?"Peals of laughter erupted from the bleachers.Lucas gripped the guarantee letter tightly, his face flushed bright red. "I was only trying to help you.""But I never asked you to." Daphne stared at the refund page, her voice cold. "I did the work. I earned that money. You refunded it without my permission, and now you expect me to thank you?"Lucas had no response.I braced myself against the edge of the table and pulled out my phone. "Now that we've settled the money issue, let's talk about something else."I projected a text message from an unknown number onto the big screen.[Daphne's old injury has flared up. She's been taken to the rehabilitation center on the outskirts of town. Her emergency contact must arrive as soon as possible to sign the necessary paperwork

The gym fell silent. Only the faint electrical hum of the sound system broke the stillness.Lucas stood frozen for several seconds, the pledge still clutched in his hand. "What did you just say?"Daphne stared at the refund page, her expression icy. "He's my biological younger brother. I was the one who asked him for work, and I set my own prices. What gives you the right to refund my money without my permission?"The crowd erupted."Her biological brother?""So there was never any financial bullying?""Daphne really did choose to work for Dominic?"Lucas shook his head violently. "That's impossible! You don't even have the same last name!"Daphne shot him a sharp glance. "I took our dad's last name, and he took our mom's. What, do siblings have to share the same last name for people to recognize them as family?"Lucas' expression stiffened, but he soon seemed to find another loophole. "But you never talk to each other at school. You've never even admitted he's your brother. A
