Chapter 4

Author: Serene Peace
Grandma didn't even glance at the wreck. Instead, she lifted her chin with pride.

"So what if some girl outside the Morgan family died? Yale can do no wrong in my eyes. Why are you sticking your nose into this?"

I stared at her in shock.

So she had known Yale was coming here to hit Sophie today.

But Sophie was her own granddaughter too.

My chest tightened painfully as the truth finally sank in. This was who the Morgan family really was.

Still, one question kept nagging at me.

Who was the girl who had died?

And why had she been riding in the car that was supposed to take Sophie?

"Grandma, what if it were one of the Morgans lying dead in that car? Would you still talk about it like it was nothing?"

Her face changed instantly.

She slapped me hard across the face.

"Watch your mouth, you wretched girl! Don't you dare curse this family. You could drop dead, and the Morgans would still be perfectly fine!"

Then something seemed to occur to her, and she turned sharply to Laura.

"Call Daniel. Ask if Rachel made it to the interview."

The phone rang only a few times before he answered.

"Daniel? Are you and Rachel at the interview site yet?"

His impatient voice came through the speaker.

"Do you have to bother me over everything? She's taking an exam, not going to war. Why would I need to drive her? I told her to go on her own."

He hung up before Laura could say anything else.

For the first time, unease crept across Grandma's face.

"Rachel went alone? What if something happened to her?"

Laura didn't seem worried at all. She even took the opportunity to sneer at Sophie.

"Our Rachel is nothing like that unlucky girl. She's not going to get herself killed in some car accident."

I had no interest in arguing with her anymore. I turned and started toward the wrecked sedan.

Laura immediately panicked.

"Stop her! She's going to the interview site to ruin everything! We can't let her mess things up for Rachel!"

"What could she possibly do there? Is showing up somehow going to stop Rachel from taking the interview?" Grandma said flippantly.

Laura nearly shouted in frustration.

"If she makes a scene at the interview site and it comes up in the background check, Rachel could lose the job!"

Understanding dawned on Grandma's face. She whipped around and glared at Megan.

"Look at the ungrateful daughter you raised! This is what happens when they don't even carry our family name. Outsiders will always be outsiders!"

Mom's face flushed with humiliation.

Then she stormed over and kicked me hard in the stomach.

"Yale already told you he didn't mean to do it! Why won't you let this go?

"Rachel worked so hard to come in second. Why are you so determined to ruin this for her? Would it kill you to let her get the job? Sophie is your sister, and Rachel is your cousin. They're both family, so why are you treating them so differently?"

Her expression twisted with anger.

"If I'd known you'd grow up this vicious, I should've strangled you the day you were born!"

She put everything she had into that kick.

I staggered back several steps, my stomach twisting with pain, and let out a bitter laugh.

Strangled me at birth?

Maybe she should have.

When I was little and our families ate together, Rachel would throw a tantrum whenever she didn't like the food and dump everything she refused to eat into my bowl.

The first time I tried to say no, one of the adults slapped me.

"You're already becoming a picky eater at your age? If Rachel gives it to you, you eat it!"

Then, in high school, Sophie once came home thrilled because she'd ranked first in her entire grade.

We rushed to tell Mom the good news.

Her response was immediate.

"Get on your knees! Who told you to score that high? Rachel's at home crying because of you. From now on, you're not allowed to rank above her!"

And now, apparently, making way for the Morgans wasn't enough.

We were expected to give them our lives too.

Maybe Mom was right. If that was all we were born for, she might as well have strangled us at birth.

I closed my eyes for a moment and made up my mind.

Then I turned toward the wrecked car.

I was going to find out exactly who they had killed.

By the time Megan finished telling us what life with the Morgans had become, tears were streaming down her face."Please," she begged. "They don't even treat me like a person. They used to talk about how we're all family, but the second I ran out of money, they started hitting me every day. I'm treated worse than a stray in that house."She looked from Michael to Sophie and me."I finally understand now. You were the only ones who ever truly cared about me. You're my real family. Please let me come back. I swear I'll never hurt any of you again. I'll be the mother I should've been."For years, Sophie and I had told ourselves that Mom behaved the way she did because Evelyn had raised her to put the Morgan family first. Whenever we were mistreated at Grandma Morgan's house, or whenever we had a conflict with Rachel or Yale, we were always expected to be the ones who gave in.Now there was no denying the truth.Mom had never really thought of us as her family. Even after marrying Dad and

Dad wasted no time ending the marriage. Mom tried to hold the divorce hostage by demanding the house, apparently convinced he'd never agree to give it up. He did without a second thought. Getting away from her mattered more.Once the divorce papers were signed, Dad took Sophie and me to live with Grandma Shaw, and we severed all contact with Mom.Sophie's required health screening came back clean, which left only the background investigation for her civil service appointment. After the scene Mom had caused in front of the whole neighborhood, every neighbor the investigators spoke to went out of their way to defend Sophie."We've watched Sophie grow up. She's always been a good, respectful kid.""Her mother has treated her terribly for years and lies about her all the time, so please don't believe anything that woman tells you.""That poor girl got stuck with a mother like that, but she's always worked hard and made something of herself. She'll do a good job."Thanks to them, the backgr

The police took Yale and Laura into custody, and Michael brought Sophie and me home. Megan tried to follow us, but none of us wanted her there.Once we were alone, Sophie finally told me what had happened. It turned out Sophie had been reborn too, and she'd woken up a day before I had.In her previous life, she'd seen Yale driving the van that killed her. Once she remembered that Rachel had finished second on the written exam, the rest wasn't hard to piece together. The Morgans had wanted Sophie out of the way so Rachel could take the position. That was why Sophie had called Dad the day before and insisted he come home. That morning, Sophie quietly switched assigned cars with Rachel. What she hadn't known was that the Morgans had deliberately kept Rachel in the dark about the plan, afraid the pressure would throw her off before the interview. So Rachel had gotten into Sophie's car willingly without realizing it was the one Yale intended to hit. That was how their own scheme ended up ki

The entire family stared at Sophie as if they'd seen a ghost. The girl they were so sure was dead was standing right in front of them, alive and well.Laura's face drained of color. "Y-You... how are you still alive? Weren't you dead?"Sophie gave her a mocking smile. "Who said I was dead? I just got back from my interview."Laura's eyes widened. "Then... who was in that car?"I hurried over to Dad and Sophie. Before I could say anything, Sophie put on an innocent look."You mean the car you arranged for me? I switched cars with Rachel this morning."My head snapped toward her. That had never happened in my previous life.Could Sophie have come back too?As if she'd read my mind, she caught my eye and winked.Suddenly, everything made sense. No wonder the wrecked car had been the one assigned to Sophie. She had been reborn too.Laura's legs gave out beneath her."No... That's impossible. How could it be Rachel?"I gave her a cold smile. "Why don't you make a call and find out? They pro

Mom finally opened the trunk and pulled me out, though she made no effort to untie me."Rachel's celebration dinner is later," she said impatiently. "You're staying here. Behave yourself and don't even think about going anywhere."I looked at her without a trace of warmth. "And you think any of that matters more than someone's life?"Laura gave a derisive laugh. "Rachel just landed a coveted civil service job. Of course it matters."Grandma was even more smug. "Some people are just born with miserable lives. Rachel is the one who's going places. You'd better watch yourself, because once she moves up in government, you'll regret getting on her bad side. The Morgans finally have someone in government. Let's see who still dares look down on us after this."I couldn't help laughing."You really think getting a civil service job makes her some kind of big shot? After everything you've done, Rachel will be lucky to keep the job even if she gets it."That set Yale off."You bitch! Your own si

The moment they saw me heading for the wreck, they panicked. Mom hurried after me and tried to stop me.I ignored them and reached for the door handle, but Mom rushed forward and pinned my hand beneath hers."Nora, stop this. Your sister's gone. If you have to blame something, blame her bad luck."Come home with me. From now on, everything in the house will be yours. No one will be there to compete with you anymore. Sophie's already gone, so just let her rest."She looked at me almost pleadingly, as if I were a child throwing an unreasonable tantrum. But I refused to let this go.Even if the girl inside wasn't Sophie, she had still been a living, breathing person. I couldn't stand by and let her die without anyone even bothering to find out the truth.I stubbornly pulled the door open. The gruesome sight inside hit me all over again. One glance was enough to bring back the memory of Sophie dying in my arms in my previous life with such force that it nearly overwhelmed me.I forced myse
