Chapter 2

Author: OstRich
Rebecca did that on purpose. After all, my birthday had been forcibly moved up by a month years ago when she said she preferred celebrating hers alone. I had not had a birthday party in nearly 15 years.

Sure enough, my mom's tone turned cold after hearing her suggestion. "Maisie's birthday had already passed. Come here and see the custom tiara I ordered for you," she said.

My dad shot me a sideways glance. "You should learn from Rebecca. Even after what you put her through, she still thinks about celebrating your birthday!"

Ezekiel looked at me, too, his brows faintly furrowed.

I suddenly remembered our wedding night, when he pressed my hand against his burning chest and whispered, "Maisie, I'll only ever be yours. No one can take me away from you."

Now, that same man calmly said, "You should go to your room. Rebecca gets emotionally unstable when she sees you."

My eyes stung. I nodded hard, afraid that if I spoke, he would hear how my voice trembled. Once I was back in my room, I slid down against the door and let the tears fall freely.

Later, I pulled out my phone and booked the earliest appointment for an abortion. Then, I sent a message to an international number.

[I accept the position with the team. Pick me up at the airport the day after tomorrow.]

After sending the message, I felt utterly drained.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. When I opened it, Ezekiel was standing there.

He led me into the living room, where my parents and Rebecca sat waiting like a jury. Just as I expected, they confessed that Rebecca was pregnant. She leaned into Ezekiel's arms, looking fragile and pitiful.

"Maisie, I wasn't thinking clearly because of my illness... I didn't mean to get pregnant. Please forgive me, okay?" she pleaded.

Ezekiel held Rebecca close, his tone firm. "This isn't Rebecca's fault. She's a victim too. If she hadn't tried to save you back then, she and I would never have gotten involved with each other.

"Maisie, if you have any conscience at all, you'll accept this baby. Otherwise..." He trailed off meaningfully, while my parents shot me threatening looks.

Back then, when Rebecca and I were kidnapped, I was beaten until I was barely conscious.

Rebecca had stepped in front of me, crying as she shouted, "She's my sister! You're not allowed to touch her!"

It moved me deeply because she had hated me her entire life. I foolishly believed that if I had not been born, she would have been our parents' one and only darling.

At that moment, I forgave her for everything and even begged the kidnappers to spare her.

My parents arrived just in time to save us: me, bloodied and half-dead, and Rebecca, perfectly unharmed.

When I woke up, my dad slapped me across the face while my mom stood to the side, crying.

That was when I learned that Rebecca had been so traumatized that her mental state had completely deteriorated. I had spent this entire year drowning in guilt, spending every single day reflecting on what happened.

Whenever I saw Rebecca and Ezekiel being intimate or when everyone blamed me, I could only swallow all my grievances and tell myself that Rebecca's condition was partly my fault.

Yet, after everything, they still wanted to keep lying to me and use the kidnapping to emotionally blackmail me.

I did love Ezekiel, but not enough to raise his illegitimate child!

At that thought, I could not help but let out a bitter laugh.

Suddenly, a glass shattered at my feet.

"What are you laughing at? If Rebecca hadn't saved you, you wouldn't even be standing here right now! You should be repaying her for the rest of your life. Don't you understand that?" my dad shouted.

I was wearing a short skirt, and the glass shards cut into my calf, the pain searing through my skin and nerves.

Rebecca immediately turned to soothe him. "Dad, don't be mad. It's my fault for betraying Maisie. It's only natural that she's upset."

My mom quickly jumped in and said, "The one who should be sorry is Maisie! If she hadn't been selfish, you wouldn't have had to risk your life for her, and you wouldn't have gotten sick!"

Ezekiel stepped forward, his presence suffocating as he finished what he had not said earlier.

"Maisie, my child can't be born a bastard. And besides, Rebecca's health has always been fragile. The doctors said she can only carry one child in her lifetime. You're her sister... Don't you have a heart?"

Ezekiel's face gradually blurred before my eyes.

I bit down hard on the inside of my lip, using the pain to force myself to stay calm. Then, I asked, "Ezekiel, if I were pregnant with another man's child, would you raise it for me?"

Her health deteriorated rapidly as she lay in bed all day, with even the best medicine having no effect.Meanwhile, Connor seemed to have aged 20 years overnight, and his carefully maintained hair had turned completely white. He clung to his phone, and every time it rang, his first question was always, "Have you found Maisie? Where is she? Please tell her we know we did her wrong. We just want her to come home."Ezekiel had disappeared after leaving the hospital that day and had not been seen since. As her belly grew bigger each day, Rebecca was too afraid to leave the house, terrified friends would ask who the father was. Later, she snuck out to find Ezekiel and

Maisie's Perspective:I had just gotten off the plane and had no idea what had happened after I left. My phone screen was empty, but for the first time, I did not feel that familiar ache.Instead, I felt a strange sense of lightness and relief. The person who came to pick me up was one of the project leaders and also my college senior, Ophelia Klein. Stylish as always, she took my suitcase, hugged me, and smiled."I told the project lead yesterday that Ezekiel probably couldn't bear to let you go and might delay your flight. I didn't expect you to show up a whole night early. Did you two fight?"She had always known my relationship with my family was not good. Back in college, she had once seen me having dinner off-campus with Rebecca and my parents. The entire time, my parents had been constantly serving Rebecca food while completely failing to notice that I was allergic to seafood and feeling sick. From that day on, Ophelia started looking at me the way she looked at stray cats

Agatha shouted, "And what did you do? Not only did you refuse to leave, but you got pregnant! Do you have any idea how much effort the whole family put into making Maisie accept this baby? And now you're saying you want to marry Ezekiel?!"She hissed, "Tell me the truth. Did you plan this from the very beginning? Did you scheme to make Maisie and Ezekiel divorce? Answer me!"That was the first time Rebecca had ever faced her parents' disappointment and accusations. In the past, those looks had always been directed at Maisie, and only now did she understand how much it hurt to have the needle turned on herself. She had never imagined her parents had zero intention of letting her marry Ezekiel. She thought Maisie and Ezekiel's divorce would be a cause for celebration, but now she realized she had been completely wrong.Aside from herself, no one else wanted Ezekiel and Maisie to divorce.Feeling cornered and humiliated, Rebecca bit her lip as tears streamed down her face. "Then, wha

Ezekiel's mind went completely blank. The hallway buzzed with voices, yet he could not hear a thing. It was not until Maisie's mother, Agatha Holton, spoke that he was pulled back to reality, and he snapped out of it."Ezekiel, Rebecca's feeling uncomfortable again. What are you standing there for? Go and take care of her!"Ezekiel turned around with a look of disbelief on his face. He mumbled, "Maisie... wants to divorce me...""What?" Agatha's expression mirrored Ezekiel's shock.Everyone in the family knew how deeply Maisie loved Ezekiel and how she had always compromised for him. That was why they had the audacity to weave such a ridiculous lie, letting him and Rebecca have an affair right under Maisie's nose. The worst outcome they had imagined was Maisie running away from home for a while before giving in and coming back to accept Ezekiel and Rebecca's child. After all, children starved for love would compromise over the smallest crumbs of affection. No one had expected Ma

"That's impossible! Maisie has had a bad habit of lying since she was a kid. She must be making this up!" my dad scoffed. How ridiculous. They were the ones who had been lying all this time!My dad's words not only dismissed my mom's concerns but also Ezekiel's.He gave me one final look. "When you finally come to your senses, I'll take you to the hospital."After that, the four of them turned and left without looking back.My heart was completely shattered. I threw up a mouthful of blood and had no idea how long I lay there before I finally managed to crawl off the floor. Blood dripped one drop after another onto the ground.Holding onto the railing, I made my way downstairs, every step feeling like my bones were being ripped apart. My body was breaking down, but the baby inside me, the one that was slipping away, was somehow the only thing keeping me going.Just like that dead kitten. When the kitten died, I once thought about jumping out the window. However, I did not. I tol

  • My Sister, His Mistress   Chapter 3

Ezekiel's eyes widened in shock, and Rebecca quickly stepped between us.With an aggrieved tone, she said, "Maisie, if you don't want to, that's fine. Don't make things harder for Ezekiel. I'll go to the hospital right now and end the pregnancy!"Her tone was so determined that Ezekiel immediately wrapped his arms around her waist. However, the look he gave me was cold enough to send chills down my spine. "Maisie Shaffer, Rebecca is your sister. Do you really have to push her this far?!"My mom's expression was full of disgust. "I told you we shouldn't have said anything to her. She's been jealous of Rebecca since they were kids and always has to compete for everything. How could she possibly accept this baby?"As she spoke, my mom shoved me hard. "Get out! You're only going to upset Rebecca further!"I stumbled back, my heart pounding painfully against my ribs, every beat making my nerves shake. My eyes burned red as I stood frozen in place, shouting, "Mom! Am I not your daughte
