Chapter 2

Author: Little Sunflower
The women in our family had special genes. For generations, Hart women could only give birth to daughters, and those daughters had to take their mother's surname. Only then would they have a chance to inherit the exchange system.

This was just a legend passed down among the Hart women. I never imagined Mom would actually inherit the exchange system.

The first time I realized something was wrong was after my college entrance exam results came out.

I had always been an excellent student, but I only scored 700 points. Meanwhile, my sister Poppy, who had partied for three years straight, scored 1350.

Poppy became the biggest underdog story that year and was interviewed constantly by the media. While classmates and relatives showered her with praise, I became a joke.

"This is hilarious. The top student only got 700? She must have been cheating on every test before."

"She always studied so hard. How did she only get 700? Was the exam really that brutal? I got 1100."

"Damn, Poppy really hit the jackpot, though! She can go anywhere she wants now."

After listening to everyone mock me, I immediately requested a score review. However, the state examination board came back with ‘no errors found’.

I went home defeated and started preparing to repeat my senior year.

That summer was torture.

Poppy sprawled on the couch, watching TV and eating watermelon. She went on trips around the country with Mom and had packages delivered every single day. She was living her best life.

I locked myself in my room every day reviewing material, gearing up for round two of senior year.

Poppy loved rubbing it in. "Elisa, you're just not built for standardized tests. You crack under pressure and always bomb the big exams. Just get a job at some factory and call it a day."

Whenever Poppy went after me like this, Mom would stop her. Then, she would turn to me with encouragement. "Elisa, don't worry about repeating. You'll do great next year."

I thought it was odd that my scores had tanked so much, yet Mom did not seem surprised at all. However, hearing support from my mother, who usually ignored me, made me brush off the weird feelings I had.

The next year, I ranked third in the state and got into Whitmore University's finance program.

Finally, I could hold my head high. However, Mom insisted I come home after graduation and get a government job.

I refused.

She cried, threw fits, and threatened suicide. I had no choice but to pretend I was applying for government positions while I was actually prepping for investment banking interviews.

After my interview, the professor who referred me said I was a shoo-in. The offer would arrive in a few days.

I called Mom to share the news. "Mom, I got it! I have a job!"

She sounded thrilled. "Are you sure? Did you really get it?"

"Yes, I'm positive! The interview went so well! But it's not..."

She hung up before I could finish.

I decided to wait for the official offer before explaining everything. I wanted to tell her that investment banking paid incredibly well.

A few days later, my guaranteed offer disappeared. My professor told me they had given it to someone named Poppy Hart instead.

Furious, I rushed home to confront Poppy. However, I stopped when I heard her and Mom talking.

"I swapped your exam scores for you and got you a stable job, too. You'll coast through life now. That makes me feel so much better."

Poppy nestled against Mom, grinning. "Mom, you're amazing. I love you so much. Will the last swap be for Elisa's husband?"

Mom shook her head. "Of course not. I'll find you a good husband myself. The last swap needs to be saved for emergencies, so you'll have a backup plan when you're in labor or if something terrible happens."

Poppy looked even happier. "You're the best. Thank god Aunt Margaret dumped Elisa on you before she died. With her around, I don't have to lift a finger. I’ll just swap everything with her!"

Mom stroked Poppy's hair affectionately. Inside the room was a picture of perfect maternal love.

I stood frozen in the doorway, ice running through my veins.

Fury boiled up inside me. I dug my nails into my palms so hard that I nearly drew blood, barely keeping myself under control.

This was the ugly truth. The woman I called ‘Mom’ was actually my aunt.

She had an exchange system that she could use three times, and she had already stolen my exam scores and my job.

A few days later, Mom showed up outside my office building."Elisa, you knew, didn't you?"I paused while stirring my coffee. "Knew what?""Don't play dumb. You figured out a long time ago that your exam scores and job were swapped with Poppy’s. I underestimated you."I did not respond. She continued talking on her own."You're ruthless. You deliberately found James to trick us."I remained silent. She changed tactics. "But Elisa, here's what you don't know. Even though each host of the system only gets three swaps, the system passes on when the host dies."If you push us too far, I'd rather die and let Poppy inherit the system. Then, she can keep swapping with you for the rest of your life. You'll never escape us."I smiled."You really think I don't know anything? The inheritance is random. If you die, the system might end up with me instead."After she left in anger, my relaxed expression returned to how I truly felt inside. I was not as calm as I had looked. I had overlo

A week after the wedding, I deliberately went home for the weekend.Poppy answered the door with a sullen expression. When she saw me, her expression soured. She blocked the entrance."What are you doing here?"I pointed at her face. "What happened to you? Did someone hit you?"Poppy shoved my hand away. "None of your business. If you've got nothing to say, get lost. You're not welcome here."I laughed at Poppy's stubbornness. She was always like this. She always wanted to compete with me. Whenever things went well, she could not wait to show off. Whenever things went badly, she would never breathe a word.Struggling in school, failing at work—she never told me about any of it.She always had to prove that she was better than me. If I could handle something, she had to be able to handle it too. This marriage was the same. She probably thought that if I could handle a man like James, she should be able to as well.Even though she was being abused, she had to pretend everything

I stormed out of the house looking furious, but the moment I was outside, I burst out laughing.I had finally handed off the James bomb to someone else. Mom had no more swaps left. Now all I had to do was sit back and enjoy the show.Soon enough, relatives brought me the news that James and Poppy were getting married.Shortly after, I got another call from Mom. I thought she was calling to invite me to the wedding, but instead, she was interrogating me."Elisa, what are you scheming?"I played confused. "Mom, what's wrong? I don't understand what you're talking about."Mom let out a cold laugh. "Drop the act. Why does James have an ex-wife?"I feigned shock. "What? He was married before? Mom, why are you asking me about this? Ask Poppy. Isn't he her boyfriend?"Mom ignored me and hung up.I sneered. The fact that James had been married before was exactly why I chose him.His last wife was a wealthy foreign woman. After he staged an accident and killed her, he inherited a fort

Poppy and James were already tangled together. The pleasure on Poppy's face outweighed any pain. She kept her voice down, afraid Mom and I would hear.Perfect. The plan was almost complete.Early the next morning, I heard her and Mom arguing in hushed voices in the living room."I felt bad for him sleeping on the couch alone. I was just trying to bring him a blanket. How was I supposed to know he'd jump on me?"You have to help me! You've got one swap left, right? Let's just make this work."Mom, please help me. Otherwise, I'll never be happy."A few seconds later, I heard Poppy laugh."Mom, I knew you'd help out! Thank you so much."I had no energy to listen to the rest. After hearing what I needed to hear, my eyelids finally gave out, and I fell asleep.By the time I woke up at noon, Poppy and James were all over each other.Poppy sat in James's lap. The two of them were kissing passionately on the couch, completely absorbed in each other. The weight on my chest finally l

Not long after the trip, James started pressuring me to go home with him."I can't wait to marry you, babe. I'm dying to make you my wife."More like dying to kill me! I shivered.I decided to turn up the heat on Poppy.I made sure to bring James home while Poppy was there. I even invited all our aunts and extended family over to meet my boyfriend.James showed up with expensive gifts and health supplements that instantly won everyone over.Compliments flowed freely."In our whole family, Elisa is the most accomplished. She was brilliant in school, excels at work, and even her boyfriend is top tier.""Exactly! James is such a catch. He's perfect for our Elisa!""I have to say, your mom raised two amazing daughters. I heard Poppy's engagement is settled too, right? How's that going?"Poppy's expression darkened. She looked at Mom with reddening eyes.Mom sighed. "Unfortunately, Poppy and the Gardner boy weren't a good match. He was too reserved. It just didn't work out."One

After getting off the hot air balloon, we returned to the hotel, where an elaborate proposal setup was waiting.Poppy stormed ahead angrily while Ralph trailed behind, trying to appease her. James and I walked at the back with his friends.Honestly, I could not blame Poppy for looking down on Ralph. What kind of man was so cheap? This entire trip, James and his friends paid for everything: food, activities, flights, and hotels. Ralph had not contributed even a single cent. He even tried to piggyback off James's proposal setup for me.Right after I accepted James's diamond ring, Ralph got down on one knee in front of Poppy with a soda can pull tab."Poppy, this place is so romantic. Will you marry me?"James's friends cracked up at the scene."Is this guy for real? He mooches off everyone else's food and fun, and now he's mooching off someone else's proposal?""This is better than reality TV. What, you can't afford your own moment?""I've never actually seen someone propose wit
