Chapter 2

مؤلف: Perfect Timing
I glanced at the barrage of comments flying before my eyes, feeling like my food tasted even better than before.

After the meal, Stephen said a little awkwardly, "Nadia, I'm sorry that you're going to suffer with us. We were selfish for pretending to be rich—we wanted to adopt a daughter to care for us in our old age."

Linda pulled out a bank card. "This is for you. It has every cent we've saved up over the years. Consider it our way of making it up to you."

[What a joke. Your life's savings can't even compare to Nancy's monthly allowance!]

[Mrs. Quill gave Nancy 500 thousand dollars as pocket money without even batting an eye.]

I pushed the bank card back to them. "Mom, Dad, you should keep this. Don't worry about me. I'll study hard, make a ton of money, and give you both a great life."

Stephen and Linda were so overwhelmed that they couldn't even speak. They just kept stroking my head, praising me for being thoughtful and sensible.

The heavens had given me a second chance at life; I'd escaped the Quill family's gilded cage and met such kind adoptive parents. There was no way I was going to repeat the same mistakes.

I was going to use everything I'd learned in my last life to change my family's fate. And everyone who had hurt us would pay the price they deserved!

Right then, the comments flooded the space before me.

[Oh my god. The male lead, Eugene Lloyd, just showed up! He and Nancy are finally meeting!]

[Look at how shy Nancy is right now. They're such a perfect match—they're totally made for each other!]

The corner of my lips lifted. So, Eugene was the male lead.

Perfect. I would make good use of him.

When the admission notice from a top-ranked high school arrived at our doorstep, Stephen and Linda were so excited that their voices trembled.

"Nadia, it really is from that prestigious high school, and you ranked first! You're amazing!"

In my last life, I'd received an elite education in the Quill family. Getting first place in the entrance exam for a prestigious high school was nothing to me.

Stephen and Linda were so happy that they took me into town and bought me several new outfits, grinning from ear to ear. "Whatever other kids have, our daughter has to have too!"

The comments went wild again.

[What? Why does Nadia get to attend a prestigious high school? And as the top scorer, no less. That means she and Eugene will be in the same class!]

[Nancy had to pull strings just to get in, and her parents beat her over it.]

[Hang in there, Nancy! Your parents are just hitting you for your own good. They want you to be ambitious and driven!]

[This is how elite education in powerful families works. With great power comes great responsibility, after all. You'll be fine once you get past this!]

As I watched the comments roll by, I could practically picture the kind of life Nancy was enduring in the Quill household right now.

I'd had more than enough of that life in my last one. This time around, I would let Nancy get a proper experience of that hell.

On the first day of school, Nancy spotted me as soon as I stepped into the classroom. She was draped in luxury brands from head to toe, but it couldn't hide how pale she looked.

She looked down at me from her high horse, her voice dripping with contempt when she spoke. "Well, if it isn't Nadia Walker. Oh, wait—you're Nadia Colson now. I really didn't expect this, you know.

"You sure are lucky, even after being adopted by that poor couple. They were even willing to grovel and beg so you could get into this high school?"

At her words, the classmates around us started whispering among themselves.

"So her top score is fake? I saw her marks and thought she was some kind of genius."

"I was actually planning to ask her for tips, but it turns out this is what she's actually like. Gross."

"Let's just stay away from her from now on."

Nancy's smile grew even smugger when she saw that she'd gotten exactly what she wanted.

[Nancy really is smart. It's only the first day of school, yet she's already managed to get the whole class to ostracize Nadia.]

[Nadia just got insanely lucky. Why should she be allowed to outshine Nancy?]

Nancy leaned in close to me and hissed, "Blame yourself for having bad luck. Look at you—every inch of you screams 'poor'. You're not like me. My walk-in closet is full of designer labels, something you'll never have in this life or the next."

I lifted my gaze and saw Eugene standing not far away, looking at me with thinly veiled disdain.

I smirked coldly, unbothered by his attitude. It wouldn't be long before he came looking for me on his own.

Mr. Lloyd's voice shook as he spoke. "Nadia, how did you even do that? That was a college-level advanced calculus question, yet you solved it with such a smooth, clear line of thought."Eugene jumped in first. "Dad, I told you ages ago that Nadia's a total genius when it comes to this stuff!"Nancy froze, then blurted in disbelief, "No way. How could you possibly solve a college-level question? You're nothing but an idiot!"Right then, the butler hurried back to report, "Sir, I've looked into it. This was all Ms. Quill's doing. She bribed the principal and had her grades swapped with Ms. Colson's."[No way. How could they have found out?][Wait, I remember now—Eugene's parents are on the school board. Of course they could find out!]David slapped Nancy hard across the face at the butler's words. "How dare you tamper with the grades, you ungrateful monster? Bringing you home from the orphanage was the biggest mistake we ever made! Go home right now to pack your things. Then, get t

Nancy snorted. "I knew it, Nadia. I kept saying you got your past grades by cheating, didn't I? Now that the midterms are being strictly proctored, your tricks are useless. That's why your true colors are finally showing."After she said that, the way Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd looked at me changed. Mr. Lloyd was a college professor, and if there was one thing he despised, it was cheating. He scoffed harshly. "Before this, Eugene called and told me there was a girl in his class with outstanding grades. I trusted his judgment, but it's clear he misread you very badly. Do the decent thing. I won't ask you to return the two million you took, but you're not to take another step into our home from now on."Eugene rushed to defend me. "Mom, Dad, you've got it wrong! There's no way Nadia cheated. She's been tutoring me this whole time; I wouldn't have the grades I have now without her. If anyone's score is fake, it's Nancy's!"Nancy's expression twisted, and she started weeping. "Eugene, I know N

Very soon, it was time for the midterm exams. Throughout the month before it, Nancy actually behaved herself. But thanks to the comments, I got to know that things hadn't exactly gone smoothly for her. Right before we entered the classroom, she looked at me smugly. "Just you wait, Nadia. I'm going to crush you in this exam. If you think you can get into the Quill family, you're dead wrong! Dream on!"[That's right! Nancy has fully leveled up now. Crushing the evil villainess will be a piece of cake!][I just hope Nadia doesn't get stupidly lucky again. As long as she performs normally, there's no way she can beat Nancy!]I ignored Nancy.Even with my past experience, I still prepared thoroughly for the midterm exams. Whoever ranked first this time would get a spot in the competition team. And if anyone placed in the competition, they would have a shot at guaranteed admission into the most prestigious colleges in the country.I figured that had to be why Nancy was so desperate to

[What the hell? Nadia's been reborn? That shouldn't be the case. It's not part of the story.][Why would Nancy think Nadia has been reborn? Has she noticed something?]I froze, not expecting Nancy to guess the truth. Still, all I did was smile before leaving the room. I didn't answer her question. It wasn't time yet.…A week later, Nancy was able to walk to school on her own, though just barely.Between classes, Eugene caught me and asked, "Nadia, what's your stance on the Quill family's offer?"I looked at him calmly. "Didn't I already give them my answer? I won't do it.""But why? The Quills are more than willing to adopt you. Do you even realize—"I cut him off before he could finish. "I do. I just don't want it. Nancy can have that opportunity instead."As I turned the corner, I saw Nancy at the far end of the hallway, glaring at me with pure hatred. She steadied herself against the wall and moved toward me step by step. "Don't get cocky, Nadia. Just because Mom, Dad, and

Eugene's brows drew together as he snapped, "Mr. and Mrs. Quill, what you've done to Nancy is abuse. It's illegal!"With a look from David, the butler immediately went to call the family doctor.Over an hour later, the bleeding finally stopped. Nancy woke up, but she was still extremely weak. The moment she opened her eyes and saw David and Helen, she instinctively shrank back. Then, her gaze landed on me, and it instantly turned vicious. "What are you doing here, Nadia? You came to laugh at me, didn't you? Well, listen up. Even if I've fallen this low, I still have things you'll never be able to have!"[That's right. Even if Nancy is down for now, she's still the female lead. She'll rise again!][Don't get cocky, Nadia. Nancy is only temporarily down on her luck!]Before I could say anything, Eugene stepped forward. "How could you say that, Nancy? If Nadia hadn't insisted on coming to check on you today, you might already be dead."Nancy snorted. "I don't believe for a second t

I smirked and turned to Eugene. "By the way, Nancy lives next door to you guys, right?"He nodded, confused about where I was going with this. "Yeah, why?"I grabbed him and headed for the door. "Let's go visit her."He was confused. "Aren't you two on bad terms? Why would you wanna go to her place?"I thought for a second, then said, "She's actually my biological sister. We were adopted by different families, and I want to see what her life is like now."In my last life, Nancy had caused Stephen and Linda to die a miserable death, and she'd stabbed me to death. She would be getting off easy if she just got beaten to death right now.I would make her pay for all the suffering we went through in our last life a hundredfold. I would make sure she was tortured to death in the cage that was the Quill family.[Something's off. Why is Nadia suddenly going to check on Nancy?][Wait, can she see our comments or something?][No way. It has to be a coincidence. She probably just thinks
