Chapter 3

Author: Fierce Sleeping Dog
The lights inside were blindingly bright.

A steaming pot of beef stew sat in the middle of the living room table, surrounded by platters of mashed potatoes, fresh bread, and a colorful assortment of vegetables.

Five people were scattered across the couch and dining chairs.

Three women and two men all turned to look at me at once.

Jayda stood by the kitchen doorway, holding a platter of freshly sliced watermelon.

"Honey? Aren't you supposed to be back next week?"

A tall guy sitting at the head of the table stood up with a beer can clutched in his hand.

It was Bryce Sharpe, Jayda's classmate from college.

Startled, Bryce paused for a second before bursting into a loud laugh as if realizing what was going on.

"Hey, Cedric! Long time no see!"

The other friends around the table joined in the laughter, instantly breaking the tension.

"Cedric, Jayda was just complaining in our group chat about how you're always away on business trips and never home, and here you come dropping in out of nowhere!"

"Come sit down, Cedric! Perfect timing. The stew just started boiling!"

Jayda snapped back to reality. She set the fruit tray on the table and trotted over to the entryway.

She reached out to take my soaked blazer, her brow slightly furrowed and her eyes filled with genuine concern and gentle reproach.

"How did you get so drenched? Didn't you say you couldn't step away from Halewyn?"

Her warm hand brushed against my cheek, carrying the faint scent of her citrus perfume.

My nerves, stretched so tight they had been on the verge of snapping, suddenly went slack.

A massive wave of exhaustion and humiliation washed over me.

How had I turned into such a paranoid, pathetic madman?

"The project… hit an unexpected snag, so I didn't need to stay on site anymore." I heard my own voice, dry like sandpaper.

"I wanted to give you a surprise, so I didn't call ahead."

Jayda burst into a chuckle, then took my hand and pulled me inside.

I ended up downing a whole case of beer with Bryce and the others.

I threw back drinks relentlessly, trying to drown out the absurdity and self-reproach from moments earlier with alcohol.

The gathering dragged on until past 1:00 am.

Once our friends left, the place was a complete disaster area.

As I helped Jayda clean up the leftover food on the table, I wrapped my arms around her slender waist from behind.

"Jayda, you must be exhausted."

Jayda turned around, teasingly tapping the tip of my nose. "Silly, it was nothing."

She leaned naturally against my chest, listening to my still-erratic heartbeat.

"Jayden ended up going on a road trip with his girlfriend today. I almost went along, but he told me not to ruin his date. I figured I'd be bored at home alone, so I called a few old classmates over."

I buried my face deep into the crook of her neck, breathing in that familiar scent as the final shred of doubt inside me vanished into thin air.

That night, I fell into a deep, heavy sleep.

Two weeks later, Jayda sat in the detention center's visitation room, separated from me by thick bulletproof glass. Her hair had been cut short, and she wore a gray prison uniform. Her once-delicate face looked gaunt and withered, like that of a woman in her 60s.She clutched the divorce agreement that I had already signed.Under the terms stating she voluntarily renounced all marital assets and assumed full liability for Crestline Materials' debts, she pressed her thumbprint with trembling hands. The moment she set down the pen, she raised her bloodshot eyes to look at me. "Cedric… if I hadn't lied to you about Jayden being home during that business trip, if those extra 44 pounds hadn't shown up on that scale… would our ending have been different?"I stood up, adjusted the collar of my trench coat, and looked down at her through the glass. "Jayda, the smart scale only measured weight. The thing that lost its measure was your own heart."With that, I didn't spare her another glan

Jayden was tossed through the doors of the ballroom like a sack of garbage. His face was bruised and battered, and his clothes were completely disheveled.Holding him were several burly men wearing floral shirts and covered in tattoos.Jayden crawled on the floor, weeping violently while still clutching that Porsche key for dear life. "They're taking my car! They're going to chop off my hands!"A scar-faced man leading the group let out a cold sneer. He pulled a thick stack of loan and mortgage contracts from his jacket and threw them directly at Jayda's face.Paper sheets scattered all across the floor with a loud rustle."Jayden Cohen, legal rep of Crestline Materials, and Jayda Cohen, joint guarantor. Take a long, hard look!"The scar-faced man's rough voice echoed throughout the hall."The 600 thousand dollars in bridge loans you borrowed by mortgaging your school-district apartment come with daily interest rates. As of 3:00 pm today, you are in total default!"Add that to

On screen, Daxton was pinned right on top of Jayda, completely naked."When the year-end audit rolls around, he'll be packing his bags to go eat dirt at the Northwest branch."Jayda giggled seductively, saying, "He's such a blockhead. He does whatever you tell him to do. A little sweet-talking, and he'll sign without a second thought."Seeing this scene, every single person among the crowd of hundreds froze dead in their tracks.Jayda's face instantly turned pale.Up on stage, all color drained from Daxton's flushed face in a heartbeat."Turn it off! Fucking turn it off!" Daxton screamed heart-wrenching roars into the microphone while charging toward the backstage controller like a lunatic.Countless camera flashes went off wildly as reporters rushed to the edge of the stage."Mr. Estrada! Who is the woman you slept with in the video?""Mr. Estrada, rumors say you married into the Collins family to get ahead. Does Mr. Collins know about these shady dealings of yours?"The mic

On Friday afternoon, Grandmont Hotel's third-floor ballroom hosted the company's 20th-anniversary gala. The city's most prominent developers, business leaders, and political figures were all in attendance.Jayda had gone all out with a full skincare treatment and wore an expensive, floor-length black dress with an open back."Honey, Mr. Estrada is the star of the show today. I heard the chairman is going to announce his promotion to CEO on the spot." Jayda probed seemingly offhandedly in the car while touching up her lipstick in the vanity mirror."Once he gets promoted, you'll surely rise through the ranks right alongside him, right?"Holding the steering wheel with one hand, I turned to glance at her.Around her neck hung a dazzling diamond necklace. That was a birthday present Daxton had purchased for her using company funds."Of course. Today, everyone will remember Mr. Estrada's name," I replied casually.Jayda didn't catch the murderous intent in my voice. She was too busy

After stepping out of the cafe, I dialed Jayden's number. He picked up almost immediately, and the clatter of poker chips and cards came through the phone."Yo, Cedric! What's up? I'm on a winning streak here!" Jayden's voice was slick and glib, dripping with the frivolous attitude of a complete slack-off."Jayden, where are you? Wrap things up and get over to my office right now," I said, my tone sounding thick with uncontrollable urgency and excitement."Mr. Estrada just made the final call. That eight-million-dollar material procurement package for Eastside is all yours!"The other end of the line went dead silent, followed by a loud crash as poker chips were slammed across the table."Holy shit! Cedric! Are you serious? Eight million dollars?" Jayden's raspy, coarse voice nearly shattered my speaker."Would I joke around with you about something like this? I've already drafted the contract."Lowering my voice, I cautioned him with exaggerated secrecy. "But you'll need to br

Soon, Ariel made an appointment to meet me at Buttercup Cafe.At 11:50 am, I arrived at the designated place, and Ariel was already there waiting for me.I pulled back the chair opposite her and sat down before casually pushing the manila envelope I had brought along to the center of the table."Ms. Collins, here's what you asked for."Ariel's fingers holding her cigarette paused briefly. She let out a cold sneer, then reached out to untie the string on the manila envelope. There wasn't much inside. Just a dozen or so sheets of A4 paper and a metallic flash drive. They contained complete bank statements showing Daxton transferring funds overseas in batches through Jayda's private account over the past six months. There were also several ultra-HD snapshots of Jayda and Daxton passionately kissing in the underground garage of a five-star hotel. As Ariel flipped through them page by page, her face grew paler while her gaze turned increasingly vicious. When she spotted the advanc
