Chapter 3

Author: Against the Flow
No matter how much I begged, it was useless. Even though I was always at the top of my class, my parents acted like they didn't notice at all.

Soon, they found me a job as a cleaner and forced me to work to support the family.

"Make sure to send me your salary as soon as you get paid! Carl, Tony, and Sandy all need money. We're all counting on you."

Every word out of Miranda's mouth was for her other children, but she never thought about me.

The cleaning job had me up early and working late into the night. I was often so exhausted, I couldn't even stand up straight. Luckily, the place I worked at was a school, so I would frequently listen to lessons from outside the classroom.

My boss noticed how hardworking and eager I was to learn, so he gave me an easier office job. He even tutored me and helped me apply to a technical school so I could get an education and learn some skills.

I sent half my salary home, keeping only some for myself in preparation for school.

Once, I was a day late sending the money because I had a cold. My parents showed up and started yelling and beating me. In the chaos, my offer letter and the tuition I had worked so hard to save up fell out of my books.

When Miranda saw them, she picked the letter up and tore it into pieces. "You still want to go to school? Secretly saving money so you can study?! Stop dreaming!"

Arnold kicked me hard. "Ungrateful brat! How dare you hide money from us!"

I crashed into the wall and coughed up blood, but they acted like they didn't see me injured at all and just kept beating me. I begged them to spare me, to give me one more chance.

"I'm sorry! I'll never do it again, but I really want to go to school. Mom, Dad, I'm begging you. I promise I'll work myself to the bone for you."

But they didn't listen. Arnold's frenzied slaps just kept landing on my face. "Look at your useless self! What's the point of studying? We'll never agree to it!"

I tried to pick up the torn offer letter, but Miranda got there first and threw it straight into a burning fire stove.

I could only watch as the letter turned to ashes. At that moment, I felt my whole world fall apart. They searched my room, took all my money, and even took everything valuable with them.

Before leaving, Miranda ordered me with a brutal expression, "Sandy needs money for her school dorm! Get a second job after work. From now on, if you don't send at least six hundred a month to us, you'll regret it."

I broke down crying as I watched them leave.

I had nothing left.

While my parents thought only of Sandy's needs, they never once considered how I was supposed to survive without a cent.

Ha!

Whatever warmth I had for my family was completely extinguished that day.

My monthly pay was just over two hundred. To meet Miranda's demand of six hundred a month, I started working odd jobs after my shifts every day. I did everything from construction work to food delivery. No matter how dirty or exhausting the job was, I would do it as long as I could make money.

Once, I passed out from exhaustion while delivering food. The manager found me, told me to go home and rest, and not to push myself so hard.

I couldn't afford to lose the job, so I begged. "Please don't fire me! I promise I'll work hard. Just give me another chance."

He sighed and helped me up, but I was so weak I could barely stand. Feeling helpless, the manager pressed a few ten-dollar bills into my hand and told me to get better before coming back to work.

I was so grateful, I thanked him repeatedly, clutching the money in my hand. That day was my birthday, and I wanted to eat some meat for once.

Unexpectedly, I ran into my parents and Sandy at the restaurant.

Arnold saw me and slapped me hard across the face.

That was how Sandy lost the vision in her right eye. Only a cornea transplant could restore her sight. When what happened reached my parents, the story turned into me attacking Sandy with a dagger. By then, I was too exhausted to even try to defend myself when it came to all their misunderstanding toward me.At that time, Arnold beat me viciously. "You ungrateful brat! Since you hurt her, you should give her your cornea to make up for it!"Miranda also sobbed uncontrollably. "She was so beautiful and talented, but now she's lost her eye… What will she do in the future? You must take responsibility!"Carl and Tony had no objections. In fact, they both supported the idea of me donating my cornea. I cried and refused, so Arnold locked me up and tried to force me into surgery. The next day, they actually took me to the hospital.I looked at my parents in disbelief, feeling completely powerless for the first time in my life. As the doctor approached, I jumped from the second floor fro

My parents thought it was just kids fooling around and not something out of the ordinary, so they never looked into it.The second time I met Sandy was by the river. Carl nearly drowned, and I ran to her family and begged her parents for help. Her parents went into the water to save Carl as they held their hands together. They managed to pull him out, but then the current suddenly became so strong that it immediately swept them away.By the time the rescue team arrived, it was too late. Her parents were already gone. If they hadn't tried to save Carl, he would have died, and they would still be alive. After my parents took Sandy in, she started to hate me. She told me that if I hadn't called her parents for help, they wouldn't have died. Thus, she did everything she could to win over my parents' affection, take what was mine, and create chaos at home. She even used her status as the daughter of Carl's savior to drive a wedge between me and my brothers. At first, my parents still

Before Sandy came to live with us, I lived harmoniously with my two older brothers Carl and Tony. They cared about me a lot, too. After Sandy arrived, everything changed. They started ignoring me, doting on her instead. I wanted so badly to fit in and play with them, but they always shut me out.One time, as I was trying to win them over, I carefully made drinks for everyone. Tony and Sandy both refused, but Carl drank it. He ended up poisoned and was rushed to the hospital for emergency treatment. The doctor said it was rat poison. My parents screamed at me, calling me cold-blooded and accused me of poisoning Carl. No matter how I tried to explain that I didn't do it, they wouldn't believe me. They even threw me out, and I was homeless for three whole days. When I was nearly starving to death and sneaked back home, only then did I overhear Tony and Sandy talking. Tony said he saw Sandy buying rat poison and suspected her. Sandy denied it, saying she bought it to get rid of the r

I shook my head, still refusing. When Mr. Smith saw my resistance, he dropped all pretense and said coldly, "Looks like you still haven't made up your mind, but I've already paid fifty thousand dollars in cash for the wedding gift. She has to come with me to get the marriage certificate today."That was when it hit me. This was the real reason they called me back. They didn't care about my consent and had already sold me off.How devious!I pointed at Sandy furiously, who was pretending not to be there, and offered her to Mr. Smith instead. "I'm not interested, but she's a great choice. She's pretty and educated, definitely a perfect match for you."As soon as I said that, Miranda slapped me hard across the face. The burning pain made me gasp."You ungrateful brat! She's your sister! How can you throw her under the bus like that?" Miranda looked so furious she seemed ready to kill me right then and there. So, she knew exactly the kind of hell she was pushing me into. She couldn'

The judge announced sternly, "Jurors, you may now deliver your verdict on this charge. Guilty or not guilty?"After some deliberation, the jurors began to cast their votes.I watched calmly, not the least bit anxious. On the other hand, my parents were clearly worried, the fear evident in their eyes.In the end, the jury delivered a unanimous verdict. One hundred votes declared me not guilty on the charge of violating the filial support law.Next, Arnold brought up the second charge against me.He claimed that I had pocketed the money from selling the house and run off with fifty thousand dollars, which was meant to be my wedding gift. I disappeared, leaving my parents with debt and chased by creditors every day. When the crowd heard this, they looked at me with renewed suspicion and doubt."She could have done it, but only because her parents treated her so badly. Maybe it was her way of getting revenge.""That's right! Her whole family is bringing the charges, after all!""
