Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
It rained heavily on the day of my discharge. I was soaked through when I returned to Quest Villa.

As soon as Zac saw me, he covered his nose in disgust. "You reek!"

The summer rain had a muddy smell, but it was not unpleasant. He was saying that just to make Winona smile.

Sure enough, his exaggerated performance made Winona, who was wearing my pajamas, cover her mouth and chuckle softly. Her eyes were brimming with pride and provocation as she looked at me.

I simply ignored her and turned around to go upstairs.

Sterling hurried out of the kitchen, frowning and looking at me with disgust. "Winona put aside work today to spend time with Zac. It's one thing that you're not grateful, but who are you showing that attitude to?"

I stood on the steps, my gaze indifferent. "Yeah, that's why I'm letting her have you. Let's get divorced."

My voice was soft but clear.

A trace of disdain flashed in Sterling's eyes. "Sienna, where did you learn this bad habit? You're always threatening to divorce. Do you think you can threaten me?"

Winona also stood up, speaking in a coquettish voice as she advised me, but she was actually fanning the flames. "Sienna, don't get me wrong. Sterling and I may be childhood sweethearts, but he's a good husband who puts his family first. You should cherish him. How can you threaten him with divorce at every turn?"

Sure enough, Sterling's eyes showed even more disgust toward me after she finished speaking.

I nodded nonchalantly. "You're right, so you can have this man. Cherish him."

After saying that, I turned around and went upstairs, ignoring the secretly delighted Winona and the gloomy-looking Sterling behind me.

I packed everything that belonged to me in the bedroom into the suitcase and put the signed divorce agreement and the mother-son disownment letter on the dressing table. Finally, I took off the wedding ring on my ring finger.

Sterling did not catch up with me. He thought that I was just throwing a tantrum, so he went into the kitchen to continue cooking. He was not good at cooking, but he could learn patiently for Winona.

As for me, he had only ever fed me a bowl of cold oatmeal in the six years of our marriage. He had even bought it from a shop outside.

Winona posted a photo of the table full of delicious food and Sterling's busy figure on social media.

The caption wrote: [There'll always be someone who remembers what your favorite food is.]

Just one minute after the photo was posted, my mother-in-law and sister-in-law eagerly liked it.

My mother-in-law even commented: [Winona's lovable, unlike the woman who married into the family with great effort but is still annoying after six years.]

My sister-in-law also chimed in: [I'll just say it straight. Please marry my brother. His current wife is just not good enough!]

I casually liked the post, but it disappeared when I refreshed the feed again. I did not bother with it and went downstairs with my suitcase.

Seeing me carrying my suitcase, Sterling scolded me coldly, "Winona's social media post was a joke. Do you have to make a fuss?"

Winona's eyes were also red as she gave a crocodile-tear apology. "Sienna, I didn't know you would get jealous. If I had known, I wouldn't have come here today and pissed you off..."

I looked at Sterling calmly and said indifferently, "I've put the divorce agreement on the dresser. See you at the courthouse tomorrow morning."

While we were talking, the cab arrived. I turned around to leave.

Sterling was about to say something, but Zac stopped him. "Let her go!"

He seemed to hate me to the core, his expression showing his disgust for me. He spat at me, pulled off the good luck charm that I spent a lot of effort getting, and threw it at me. "Get lost! Ms. White will be my new mother from now on."

"Okay." I threw the charm into the trash can at the gate, opened the car door, and got in. "Let's go, sir."

The car drove away, leaving Quest Villa far behind.

Sterling's POV:In his eyes, Sienna was always quiet and reserved. She was boring, just like her job. Sienna was even more incomparable to Winona. For some reason, every time Sterling returned to his family's house drunk and frustrated, his irritable heart would always calm down after seeing Sienna chatting happily with his grandfather. However, what happened later was an accident. Sterling had not meant to hurt Sienna.Later, when his grandfather ordered him to marry Sienna, he was unexpectedly relieved and somewhat... glad and excited.Life after marriage remained as plain as ever.Sienna was fully devoted to her restoration work, which made Sterling very jealous. Ultimately, all the tomb robbers were captured, and Sterling was promptly sent to the hospital. He was shot in the back because I pushed him.I drove Miley to the city hospital to visit him as he had already come out of the operating room. He had a bandage around his chest. When he saw me, his eyes lit up before quickly dimming.I put the flowers in the vase and comforted him, saying, "Your mother picked up Zac. Summer vacation is coming to an end."Sterling nodded.I glanced at Miley, who was obediently waiting at the door. After much deliberation, I added, "I will take Miley away from here and send her to study in the city. You... I don't want her to have anything to do with the Quest family. Let's get divorced when you recover."Sterling found it hard to accept. His eyes suddenly turned red.I suddenly could not remember what the Sterling who had drunk himself silly and raced recklessly for Winona looked like anymore. He said in a humble yet compromising tone, "So... is it r

Sterling was much quieter after that day. It was not just that he felt guilty toward me. Quest Group was being criticized by netizens due to Winona's reputation.I had avoided going online for years and only found out recently that it was revealed that Winona's reputation as an award-winning screenwriter was fake. It happened right before the movie based on her was released. Her award-winning work was just a blatant compilation of others' work. She plagiarized the original works of no less than 20 rookie screenwriters.Sterling kept public opinion under fire. For some unknown reason, Sterling suddenly unfollowed Winona two years ago. It was only then that netizens brought up the matter again.Winona went from being hailed as a genius to being scolded online as a plagiarizing fraud, but none of that had anything to do with me.The excavation work of the tomb and the surrounding burial pits was coming to an end after three years. Once all the cultural relics were successfully restore

Sterling and Zac's appearance was just a minor episode in my peaceful life. I did not take it seriously at first. Unexpectedly, Sterling bought the house next door and moved in.Zac, the young heir who had been spoiled since childhood, actually imitated Miley to please me.Miley would always get up early to herd sheep. Before leaving, she would make lemonade for me to take to work.Hence, Zac made me a pot of tea using my favorite Earl Grey. He waited at my door with a flask in his arms, staring longingly through the fence. It seemed he had been worried about missing me. However, Miley and Goldie chased him until he almost lost his shoes. Zac was afraid of dogs.Miley said to him smugly, "Don't compete with me for Mom!"Zac was scared to death but still insisted, saying, "She's my mom too. She gave birth to me!"Miley retorted, "Why would Mom rather have me, the one she found, than you? Reflect on that!"Zac was reduced to tears but could do nothing.Zac and Miley bickered wi

I carried Miley home.Sterling refused to leave but was scared to get too close to me, so he could only hold Zac's hand as they followed me from a distance.I just ignored them as I carried Miley home and applied medicine to her wounds. Zac was two years older than her, and he was evidently stronger. Miley's knees and elbows had superficial injuries.I patiently coaxed her as I finally finished applying the medicine.Looking back, I saw Zac looking at me with tears in his eyes. "Mom, my hand hurts too."I looked at the wound on his tender palm that was dusted with sand, but I was indifferent. I loved him to the core in the past. Even a casual cough from him was enough to make me tense, what more a wound like that. "I still have work to do this afternoon. Be good at home, or the wounds will bleed again," I gently instructed Miley. With her big, round eyes wide open, she timidly glanced at Sterling and Zac behind me before glancing back at me. She asked anxiously, "Mommy, are you

Three years later."Mommy..." A child's innocent voice rang outside the small yard.I took off my apron and pushed the door open with a smile. A dirty little girl plunged into my arms like a cannonball."Did you fight with Goldie again?"Goldie was a male puppy born to the German Shepherd owned by the village chief. It was just a little over eight months old.The little girl grinned sheepishly, showing her front teeth. "I won!" She sounded rather proud."Do you still remember the words I taught you yesterday?" I casually picked up a towel and wiped her face. After a few wipes, the pinkish-white towel turned black, and the little girl's freckled, chubby face was revealed. Her name was Miley Mackie. She was an orphan I adopted after coming to the Patagonian Desert three years ago."Mommy, I'm hungry..." Miley stuck out her tongue as her big, round eyes rolled around. Then, she began changing the subject. "I cut a large basket of grass for the village chief's lambs this morning!"
