Chapter 4

作者: Perfect Timing
I rejected her request at once. "No way, Daisy! If you slip and fall or knock into something while you're here, you're going to pin the blame on us, anyway! I—"

Daisy put on a pitiful look and said, "What are you saying, Winter? Are you seriously treating me like an outsider now? Aren't we family?"

Seeing that I was firm in my decision, Daisy then changed her target to Jerome. "Jerome, it's going to be a waste of money and resources if you hire two nannies to look after Winter and me.

"If I stay with you for now, Nancy will then be able to take care of us both at the same time. Wouldn't that be easier and lighter on your pocket?"

Before Jerome could get in a word, I said, "Money isn't the main problem right now, Daisy. If you really don't want to go back to your village, then we can arrange for you to stay at the hospital instead. It's safe and even more convenient for you there.

"I'm just looking out for both you and your baby!"

Jerome thought that my suggestion was a good one, too. He agreed with me and said, "She's right, Mom. You're going into labor soon, so it would be better if you stayed at the hospital for the time being."

A split second later, Daisy fell on her butt on the ground and began to throw a huge tantrum.

That gave me and Jerome a huge shock. After all, she was putting her baby's life in danger.

Jerome hurried up to her to help her up, but she kept clawing at his arms while sobbing hysterically.

"Perry! Look at what your son and daughter-in-law are doing to me! They want to kick me out of the house and have me spend the night all alone in the cold by myself!

"It was a miracle that I'd even managed to get pregnant with your baby at such an old age, and it's been so hard on me, but look at what your son is doing to me! Perry, I don't want to live anymore! Take me away!"

I finally witnessed a scene so ridiculous that I used to think it would only happen in low-budget soap operas on TV.

Eventually, Jerome gave in and softened his tone. "Alright, that's enough, Mom. Winter was just not in a good mood because of her pregnancy. Don't hold her words against her. You can stay here if you want."

Daisy's expression immediately switched as a huge smile appeared on her face. She accepted Jerome's offered hand and got back onto her feet, without a single trace of the crocodile tears she'd cried earlier.

"Of course I'd never hold it against her. We're family!"

As expected, over the next few days, Daisy wouldn't stop trying to brainwash me into having a cesarean procedure by repeating it to me every single day.

I didn't take any of her words to heart and refused to listen to her. After all, her expected delivery time was more than a week earlier than mine. If things went on like this, she would eventually have to give birth before I did.

I even made sure to get someone to install the hidden security cameras all throughout the house while Daisy and Nancy were both asleep one afternoon.

Since my soft-hearted husband, so loyal to his mother, had graciously welcomed a wolf into our sheep pen, I had to be on my guard always and be prepared for anything.

The days passed quickly, and I finally made it to the day when Daisy went into labor.

Nancy's face was pale as she helped Daisy shuffle into the living room. She then yelled at me, who was happily munching on some pumpkin seeds, "Winter, I think Daisy is going into labor. Quick, call the hospital!"

I was just about to stand up and grab my phone when a dangerous thought occurred to me.

Daisy was as pale as a ghost as she clutched her tummy in great pain. Her water already broke, and she was dripping everywhere she went.

If I found an excuse to delay getting Daisy to the hospital, would that mean something terrible would happen to her and the bastard that she still hadn't been able to give birth to?

However, I quickly snapped back to my senses. Nancy was also present. She would intervene at once because she'd never let Daisy suffer too much.

Before I could reorganize my thoughts, Nancy suddenly let go of Daisy and ran to the nearest phone to call the ambulance because she saw that I'd frozen in place.

But, while she was hurrying past me, Nancy slipped and started falling toward me. I couldn't avoid her in time, and she fell flat right on top of me.

The sudden sharp pain in my belly was so great that I blacked out at once.

Yet, right before the lights went out, I swear I saw a smug, victorious grin on Daisy's face as she stood there, watching me.

When I came to, I realized that I was lying in a hospital bed. Instinctively, I reached down and touched my belly, but it was as flat as a pancake. My baby was gone.

Jerome was sitting right next to my bed. He heaved a sigh of relief when he saw that I was awake.

"Dear, Nancy told me that you slipped and fell at home, so you were brought to the hospital along with Mom and underwent a cesarean. The baby's already born. Our little Corey Dyson is a very healthy baby boy."

I frowned. Did I slip and fall, or was I shoved to the ground?

I had been in such a fright back then that my memory had gone fuzzy. However, the first thing I had to do was make sure that my baby had not been switched.

I asked Jerome, "Where's my baby?"

Jerome brought the baby over and placed him in my arms.

I'd only taken a peek at him and immediately found myself about to faint once more.

This face was all too familiar. It was Casey! This was not Corey—not my baby! In the end, Daisy still managed to switch babies with me.

  • My Son's Loyalty Dies With Me   Chapter 10

Some days ago, I had told the entire household that I was switching out everybody's toothbrushes and replacing them with new ones. Then, I immediately sent Daisy's and Jerome's toothbrushes to a lab to get tested. As it turned out, the results were the same as it was in my past life. Jerome was not Daisy's biological son.Jerome had to take a good minute to let it all sink in. He suddenly recalled the "dream" I'd told him about last time, and it was then that realization finally dawned on him.Daisy had schemed to switch our babies from the very start. But when the plan failed, she then forced us to take her in so she could live with us and tamper with the washing detergent. She'd done everything to poison and kill Corey all along, so that her own son, Casey, would inherit the family fortune in the future.Jerome was still holding the report in his hands when they began to shake uncontrollably. He gritted his teeth and said, "Wow, Mom, you had everything beautifully planned out fro

As expected, Casey's condition just kept worsening as the days went by. In fact, he even started throwing up and getting diarrhea. It was obvious that he was very, very sick.Daisy couldn't hold it in any longer. She said that she was taking Casey to the pediatrician no matter what, so I quickly followed along with worry written all over my face. When we got to the hospital, the doctor frowned as soon as he saw Casey's symptoms. "What's wrong with all of you? This child is obviously having liver problems. Why would you only bring him to us now?"Daisy was in great disbelief, her face scrunching up like a piece of paper. "What? Doctor, are you saying that my son has liver problems?"The doctor said that he still needed to give Casey a thorough check-up before coming to a conclusion, but his preliminary diagnosis was liver failure. When Daisy heard that Casey's liver was damaged, she got such a fright that she fainted on the spot.It was only then that I spilled the beans to the

After Casey's and Corey's clothes were dry, Nancy brought them back in for us. Daisy then piped up that she wanted to dress the babies up in their newly-washed clothes. I picked out an outfit for Corey, and she chose the same outfit for Casey as well. Before putting the clothes on Corey, I made a big show of deeply inhaling his clothes and exclaiming, "This smells so good!"Daisy smiled widely and nodded in agreement. "I agree. The baby detergent you bought smells heavenly!"Her smile grew even wider, with a hint of relief, after I dressed Corey up in his clothes. She knew very well that the jasmine-scented benzene detergent was harmful to babies, so she purposely steered Casey clear of Corey. When I returned, I saw both babies happily chewing and sucking on their sleeves and hems. I hurriedly went over to Corey and removed his hand from his mouth. Then, I chided Nancy, "Nancy, you have to watch them properly and make sure they don't put things into their mouths!"Nancy just chu

I nodded slightly at Jerome and turned to open the door. "Sorry. I was a little rude earlier. Feel free to live with us if you want to."That night, Jerome and I watched a replay of the footage from the hidden surveillance cameras together. The video showed Daisy leaning back comfortably on our couch, as if she owned the place, while Nancy waited on her hand and foot.Nancy then said remorsefully, "I'm sorry, Daisy. It was because of my oversight that they managed to switch the babies back! How do you think they knew? Do you think they might have found out?"Daisy teased Casey as she smiled coldly. "It's fine. We managed to worm our way into their home now, anyway. You know that it's very normal for infants to get sudden death syndrome at any point in time, Nancy."Once we get rid of Winter's baby, she won't be able to conceive again in such a short time, either. She'll have no other choice but to focus on bringing Casey up, especially if he keeps appearing in her line of sight du

After a month of recovering from giving birth, Daisy and I both checked out of the postpartum recovery and retreat center and went home. Daisy should be returning to her home in her village, but to our surprise, she arrived at our door with Casey in her arms and an expectant look on her face as she stared at Jerome, Corey, Nancy, and me."Mom? Why are you waiting at our door?" Jerome asked.Daisy smiled widely and said, "Jerome, why are you saying that as if you're not pleased to see me? Isn't your home my home, too? It's hard for me to care for a baby on my own back home. If I stayed with you, I'd at least have someone to turn to if things went wrong!"I frowned. "Daisy, we can always hire another nanny to help you out at home. Or, Nancy can go back with you if she doesn't mind. I'll get another nanny for myself."No matter what, I didn't want Daisy in my home anymore. When Daisy heard that I wanted to get rid of both her and Nancy, she began to get anxious. "Jerome, look at wh

I was fuming. I refused to let the same thing happen as it did in my past life.Since Daisy was most likely occupied on the operating table during the cesarean procedure, she couldn't have been the one who switched the babies. So, who could have done it?Meanwhile, Jerome thought that I was mad at him for not being there to protect me when I fell. He looked at me, guilt written in his eyes, and apologized."Dear, I'm so sorry for failing you. If I hadn't been busy working overtime at the company, this would never have happened to you. I nearly had a heart attack when I got Nancy's call. But luckily, you and Corey are both safe and sound."Just then, Nancy, who was keeping watch over Daisy at the bed next to mine, spoke up. "Mr. Dyson, please be quiet. Daisy is still asleep."I stared at Nancy's face. Could Nancy be Daisy's accomplice, after all?I turned and looked at the bed next to me. Daisy was holding my son in her arms as she slept. At that sight, I instinctively clenched my
