Chapter 2

Author: Triple Threat
It turned out the one who should have been apologizing was not me.

My hand clenched around my purse until my knuckles went white. My gaze slowly swept across the young woman's guilty, helpless face before landing on the garish blue stones glinting at her earlobes. I smirked.

"Your earrings are beautiful, Ms. Yates. Did your boyfriend give them to you? They must be expensive."

Last month on Valentine's Day, I stumbled across Victor's purchase history. One pure gold bracelet and one pair of sapphire earrings.

The bracelet cost one thousand dollars, and it was on my wrist. Meanwhile, the earrings cost eight thousand dollars, and he had given them to the woman standing in front of me.

When Samantha Yates heard my words, her face drained of all color in an instant. Her lips trembled for a long time, but she could not squeeze out a single word.

Pathetic!

Without sparing her another glance, I turned and walked away.

On the way home, I called my father. He was Victor's boss and the man in charge of Lloyd Industries. "Dad, I need a favor."

I had changed my phone wallpaper from our family photo to one of just me and Tony. My voice was unnervingly calm.

"That promotion to marketing director you promised Victor? Cancel it. And find me the best divorce lawyer you can. I'm divorcing Victor.

"Yes. He's having an affair with our son's teacher."

My father moved quickly. Within half an hour, a divorce attorney sent over three gigabytes of evidence and documentation.

I went through it. Beyond the social media posts I had already seen, there was another account I had never encountered before. There were a total of 83 videos, and every single one featured Victor.

I found out that last Christmas, when Victor claimed he was working late and could not come home, he had actually flown to Samantha's side to draw little stars with her in the snow.

On our son's seventh birthday, the gift Victor gave him was something Samantha had helped him pick out—a stuffed teddy bear.

In one of the videos, Samantha tucked intimate photos of herself and Victor into the bear's belly, laughing triumphantly all the while. "A surprise for Mr. Gardner's precious son. I can't wait for the day he discovers it."

In the comments, confused strangers asked questions.

[Does your boyfriend have kids from a previous marriage?]

Samantha, posting under a kitten avatar, replied: [He does, but I'll be taking over as the child's mom soon.]

She added a row of blushing emojis.

Then, there was the most recent video, uploaded the day I left for my trip. It was taken from the storage room of our house. Samantha leaned against the door with a selfie stick, smiling sweetly at the camera.

"Mr. Gardner's kid is so naughty. I'm going to lock him in this dark room as punishment."

In the background, the seven-year-old Tony begged for mercy through terrified sobs.

My hand tightened around the mouse so hard that it hurt. I shot to my feet with a bang, my mind racing back to the night my plane landed. I had called home over a dozen times. It was not until the 17th attempt that someone finally picked up.

"Why did it take you so long to answer? Where's Tony?" I was frantic, terrified something had happened at home.

On the other end, Victor's breathing grew noticeably heavier. After a long pause, he stammered an explanation, "T-Tony had a nightmare. It took me forever to get him back to sleep. Can we talk about this tomorrow?"

At the time, I did not think twice about it. Victor brushed me off, and I let him.

Now, looking back, I realized the signs had been there all along. My chest felt like it had a gaping hole in it, and cold wind whistled through.

It was not the affair that hurt. It was the fact that I never imagined Victor would let someone else harm our child.

Tony is still young. He can't grow up without a father. For our son's sake, forgive me just this once."I looked at the man before me, who was both familiar and foreign. My heart was filled with endless emotion, but I had already given him countless chances for Tony's sake back then.I let out a bitter laugh. "Victor, this is pointless. You did something wrong, plain and simple. Why do you think you deserve forgiveness? As a husband, you cheated. As a father, you stood by and watched whil

Some people believed her explanation. Of course, others did not.Victor was drawn by the commotion outside and walked over. The first second he saw me, there was a flash of admiration in his eyes. Samantha caught it immediately. She spoke through gritted teeth, her face twisted with hatred. "Victor, she's here to sabotage your promotion!"The admiration in Victor's eyes quickly faded, replaced by disgust and impatience. "Eloise, what are you doing here?"I had to admit that they were perfect for each other. Their first words upon seeing me were identical."I'm here to attend the meeting."Victor flew into a rage. He stepped forward and slapped me hard across the face. "Wasn't ruining Samantha enough for you? Now, you have to ruin me too?"He instinctively assumed I was here to cause trouble. My statement about attending the meeting only confirmed his suspicions.People in the live stream began listing my supposed crimes—evil birth mother, gold-digging ex-wife, shameless nanny.

The implication was clear to anyone with half a brain. Who else could conduct a live stream but Samantha?Victor was pleased with himself as he thought the vice president seemed to know so much about his personal life. With that, he decided the marketing position was as good as his—especially after all the gifts he had sent.I watched Victor's delighted expression on the security monitors, a faint smile tugging at my lips. While instructing Amanda to audit the company accounts, I pulled out my phone and sent him a message.[Victor, after all these days, don't you have anything to explain to me?]His response was harsh.[Explain what? It was all a misunderstanding. You're the one making a big deal out of nothing. Eloise, let me tell you something. If you don't apologize to Samantha, I'll never forgive you! If you hadn't neglected our son, Samantha wouldn't have had to step up and be Tony's mother!]I never imagined the man I had loved for so many years would slander me like this.

What gives her the right to come back now that he's successful?"Ms. Lloyd shamelessly clung to him again, this time as a nanny. To avoid traumatizing the child, everyone was told Ms. Lloyd was the family's nanny."I've tried so hard to be a good mother to Tony, yet he rejects me so. Only now do I understand how difficult it is to be a stepmother, how hard it is to reach a child's heart."That day, after Ms. Lloyd failed to win him back, she came to the school and caused a huge scene. I lost my job because of it. But I'll face life positively and bravely move forward, because my boyfriend needs me."Samantha went on and on with her sanctimonious speech. Watching the video only made me laugh.Victor posted a caption on social media at the same time. [The road ahead is difficult, but I will always be your shield. We fear no rumors. Within moments, her body swayed unsteadily, and she staggered backward.Victor caught her in his arms and shouted at me, "Do you know she has a heart condition?""What's that got to do with me?"Victor scooped Samantha up in his arms. As he passed by me, he spoke through gritted teeth. "If anything happens to Samantha, I won't forgive you. Eloise, you've really disappointed me!"Watching Victor rush away, bitterness rose in my chest. I never thought I would one day hear him threaten me.He was disappointed in me?Victor, oh Victor. I had been disappointed in him for a long time now. It was just that after so many years together, I still held onto a shred of hope for him.I really had to thank Samantha.
