Chapter 2

Author: Cocojam
Rhys and the doctors worked with tense precision.

Eventually, a beating wolf heart was pulled from my chest.

He didn't even look closely. He escorted the heart straight into Cora's OR.

My chest was hollow. My body lay alone on the table.

The heart monitor flatlined with a harsh, endless beep. The guards were startled.

"How is she dead? Isn't she a double-heart wolf?" one guard asked, confused.

"You actually believed the Alpha's coaxing?" another guard sneered coldly. "Good that she's dead. That's what she gets for defying the Alpha and leaving her sister to die."

"What do we do now?"

"She's returned to the Moon Goddess. Let the pack handle it. If nobody claims her, toss her in the freezer."

With that, all the wolves left the room.

Over in the other room, Rhys was watching Cora for signs of rejection. Suddenly, a sharp, piercing pain hit his left chest. His inner Alpha wolf let out an uneasy growl.

He pressed hard against his chest.

Right there, a strong heart was beating wildly and vividly.

"Aurora..." he muttered with a frown.

He reached out through the bond. He finally relaxed when he sensed a trace of Aurora's life force was still there.

Losing a heart would obviously take a toll.

Rhys figured he would go see me once Cora finished her shifting recovery and settled down.

‘Just coax her a bit, and everything would be fine.’ He thought.

Rhys stepped out to check on me. He bumped into the guard.

"Where is my mate?"

The guard paused. "Isn't she resting?"

"Don't worry, Alpha. Someone will watch over her. The healers will take good care of your future Luna."

Rhys didn't catch the lie. He thought the guard made sense.

With him around, the pack would look out for me.

So Rhys went back to his Alpha suite to handle pack business.

A day later, Cora woke up.

Rhys was by her side. "Cora, you're finally awake."

Seeing him, Cora burst into happy tears.

Rhys hugged her.

"Don't worry. The surgery was a success. Your heart will never fail again."

Cora felt the surging power inside her.

The defect that plagued her for years was gone. She cried and clung to Rhys.

Rhys patted her back. He told her to stay calm.

A pack doctor saw them and joked.

"The Alpha cares so much for the Luna's sister. Outsiders might think she is your mate."

Rhys frowned.

"Watch your mouth. Aurora is my mate."

Cora's eyes darkened. She grabbed her chest, interrupting him.

Rhys swallowed his annoyance and patted her back.

"I told you not to get worked up. You need rest to fuse with your new heart."

Seeing Cora like this reminded him of me.

He hadn't seen me since the surgery.

"Cora, rest well. I'm going to see Aurora. She just lost a heart. She must be throwing a tantrum, waiting for me to coax her."

He stood up.

But Cora grabbed his hand.

"I hid this surgery from my parents. This is the crucial time for my power fusion. If no one is here, I'm scared something will go wrong. My sister has your mate bond to protect her, but I have nothing..."

Rhys saw her pitiful look. His heart softened.

He figured the healers were taking care of me out of respect for him. He relaxed.

"Alright. I'll stay a few more days. As a Luna, Aurora shouldn't be so fragile."

He sat back down. Cora finally closed her eyes.

Down in the underground freezer, two low-ranking guards stared at my body.

"Two days and nobody claimed her. What do we do?"

The other guard was cleaning. "Who cares? Just wrap it up so we can get our food."

They roughly rolled my body into a cheap linen cloth.

"Look at her. Died so miserably. A grand Luna without even one loyal follower to collect her body."

"A mate rejected by the Alpha is worse than an Omega. Might as well toss her in the incinerator."

"True. Shame, though. She was so young."

Three days later, Rhys was officially locked up by the Council of Elders, waiting for his final sentence. In the cold stone cell, I watched him sit on the floor like a walking corpse. Both were so haggard they barely looked human. The former Luna was placed under house arrest for covering up a murder, awaiting trial. The entire pack was reeling from the tragedy.Footsteps echoed outside the cell. Rhys didn't even look up. He thought it was just another guard bringing food."Rhys..."The familiar voice made him slowly raise his head.It was Mia.She stood outside the iron bars with red eyes. She was holding a tiny package."I came to... bring you something." Mia's voice choked up. "The last thing Aurora left behind."Rhys stared at her blankly. He didn't react at all.Mia pulled a

Rhys tapped the phone screen. A voice message played in the quiet room.It was Cora's voice. Sweet, but full of venomous pride:"I never even relapsed. I just wanted your healthy heart!""You're just a spare part waiting to be used anyway. You're completely unworthy of Alpha Rhys!""Giving your heart to me is at least putting trash to good use!"Everyone in the room's eyes went wide with shock.Cora went ghost-pale. She tried to make excuses, but Rhys just kept playing the messages one by one:"Mom and Dad never loved you. You're just a spare part waiting to be used!""Once I have your heart, Rhys will fall in love with the truly elegant me!""You half-breed Omega. Nobody will even care when you die!"Every sentence was as venomous as a viper. It tore Cora's fake mask right off.I watched my mother shake uncontrollably. She couldn't believe her favorite daughter was so evil."This... this isn't true..." She shook her head, trembling. But Rhys played something even more chilling. It was

Rhys snapped his head up. His blood-red eyes locked onto the small bundle.I recognized that pale blue jacket. It was what I wore right before the surgery. It still had my bloodstains on it.And my phone. The lock screen was a photo of our first date. His arm was wrapped around my slim shoulders."Give it to me!" He snatched the bundle. His hands were shaking so hard he could barely hold it.The pack Omega backed away in fear. "Alpha, the body has already been processed by the rules...""Processed? What does that mean?" Rhys's voice was a feral growl."Sent... sent to the Pack Pyre. She was turned to ash three days ago..."Hearing "turned to ash", Rhys collapsed to the ground on the spot.He had lost the chance to even take one last look at me. To hold me one last time.I was wiped from this world forever.Seeing this, the pack Omega dropped his cleaning tools and bolted.Rhys sat alone on the freezing floor. He sifted through my jacket with shaking hands. From the pocket, he pulled ou

It shattered into pieces."Where is Aurora? Hand her over!"He grabbed the werewolf surgeon by the collar and lifted him off the floor. The doctor turned ghost-white. He was shaking like a leaf."Alpha... which one do you mean...?""My Mate! Aurora! Where is she?" Rhys's eyes turned totally blood-red. His wolf side fully took over. "Where are you hiding her?""She has already returned to the Moon Goddess! The moment you took the heart to Cora's room, her monitor flatlined!""You signed the consent form yourself! We all thought... we thought she volunteered to sacrifice herself for her sister!"The words struck like lightning. Rhys let go. Elias's words crushed the former Luna's last bit of hope.Knowing she couldn't hide it anymore, her legs gave out. She fell to her knees in front of Rhys."Son! I had no choice!" She sobbed hysterically. "You were dying! Your genetic defect could have stopped your heart at any moment!""I am your mother! I couldn't just watch you die!"Rhys glared at her with bloodshot eyes. He was shaking all over. "Speak! Tell me everything!"Under everyone's gaze, the former Luna finally spilled the fifteen-year-old secret."You were fatally ill. No treatment worked. I heard about a black-market doctor who could do a heart transplant. But he needed a young, strong wolf heart.""Then I heard about Aurora. They called her a freak with two hearts. I thought... I thought she was born with two hearts.""I bribed that doctor. I kept it a secret from everyone. When she was eight..."Her voice trailed off. Rhys stared at her in total shock. He suddenly remembered my desperate cries while he pinned me to the operating table. And I drifted in the air, a weightless spirit tethered to the living heart still beating inside Rhys's chest."It was your mother!" Mia's eyes were bloodshot. My best friend pointed at the former Luna, screaming. "She paid a black-market doctor to rip out one of Aurora's hearts while she was still alive!"My parents had just walked in. The words struck them like lightning. They froze at the door. The former Luna went pale. She rushed forward in a panic, trying to cover Mia's mouth."Lunatic! What are you babbling about?" She turned to the guards, her voice shrill with panic. "Don't just stand there!
