Chapter 3

Author: Flatbread
I looked at Xeno. He was spoiled beyond all limits. I lowered my eyes and gave in. “All right. I’ll find a way.”

“Thank you, honey,” Wendy said as she wrapped her arms around me. Her tone sounded “sincere.”

“Xeno and I won’t forget everything you’ve done for this family.”

Her false sweetness made my stomach turn.

She suddenly changed her tone.

“Oh, right. Since this is a school district apartment, the property deed should be in Xeno’s name only. It will all eventually belong to him.”

I did not answer right away. My fingers curled slightly at my side.

Matthew quickly chimed in with a light and upbeat tone, “That’s a great idea, Wendy. Putting it in Xeno’s name makes the most sense. He can even use it as his wedding home in the future.”

I sneered inside, but my expression remained compliant.

“Sure. Let’s do as you say and put it in Xeno’s name.”

Wendy and Matthew exchanged glances. The same flash of delight appeared in both their eyes.

They probably believed that once Xeno’s name was on the deed, the house would fully belong to them.

They did not know that I had already prepared a big surprise for them.

After that, they only grew more brazen.

Wendy often asked me for large amounts of cash under the guise of “furnishing loans” or “making connections.” My savings dwindled at a rate that was impossible to ignore.

Matthew started coming over more frequently. He walked into my home as if it belonged to him.

He criticized my housework, complained that the groceries I bought were not fresh, and said the meals I cooked did not suit Xeno’s taste.

He even “accidentally” touched the luxury watches on my desk and wore the new clothes in my closet that still had the tags on.

“Jason, this color is too dull for you. It doesn’t suit you. I’m slimmer, so it fits me better. No need to waste it.”

He stood in front of the mirror, dressed in my expensive suit, and combed his hair.

I nodded. “If you like it, take it.”

Xeno grew increasingly impatient with me.

Everything related to his daily life needed Matthew’s approval.

He constantly said things like, “Mr. Carter said” or “Mr. Carter bought this for me.”

The limited-edition LEGO set I prepared for him was tossed into a corner. “Mr. Carter promised to take me overseas. That is much better than this stupid toy.”

Wendy no longer bothered to hide anything. She openly flirted with Matthew right in front of me.

One time, I came home early and caught Matthew walking out of the master bathroom in my pajamas.

“Jason, you’re back already? I used the bathroom. The water heater at my place is broken,” he shamelessly said. His hair was still wet.

Wendy stepped out of the study and frowned. “Jason, why didn’t you call before coming home? You scared us.”

I stood there and slowly curled up my lips. “Sorry. I’ll keep that in mind next time.”

The apartment’s paperwork went through quickly. Before signing the contract, we needed to confirm the name on the property deed.

I picked up the pen and wrote Xeno’s name in the name field.

The pen scraped across the paper. At that moment, the last trace of warmth in my heart disappeared.

“All set.” I handed the contract back.

Wendy checked it carefully. When she confirmed there were no issues, a wide smile spread across her face.

I looked at her calmly. In my heart, I swore I would make them pay for betraying me.

All the paperwork for the apartment was finally complete.

Wendy held the property deed with shaking hands. The joy on her face was impossible to hide.

She waved her hand and said, “This is such a big occasion! We have to celebrate. This weekend, we’ll hold a housewarming party at the new place and invite all our friends and family!”

She exchanged a look with Matthew, and a sharp glint appeared in her eyes.

I knew it. She was not going to hold back any longer.

That weekend, the spacious apartment in the top school district was filled with guests.

Matthew wore a brand-new suit. Wendy was in a champagne-colored dress with flawless makeup. Standing together, they looked like a perfectly matched couple.

Wendy slapped Matthew hard across the face. “Investment? You don’t know a thing about investing. That was the money keeping the company alive!”I laughed.Matthew tried to pin the blame on me. “It was him! It had to be him!”I stood up slowly and looked at him calmly.“I did have someone approach you. But it wasn’t to trick you into investing. He warned you not to touch those high-risk projects.”I shook my head. “The problem is, you were too greedy. The more he told you to be careful, the more you thought he was standing in your way. So you went to the so-called top investor your friend recommended.”Matthew trembled. “Then… that was also you?”“No,” I cut him off. “That was your friend’s cousin, a professional con artist. I looked into him and even sent you an anonymous warning email. Do you remember?”Matthew’s eyes went wide. He remembered. A month ago, he had received an anonymous email, but he thought it was a competitor trying to scare him. Without reading it, he had d

The entire hall erupted in an uproar.Calvin continued, “More than twenty years ago, Jason’s mother and I were in love. My family opposed the relationship, and we were forced to part ways. By then, she was already pregnant with Jason. She raised him alone and only told him the truth shortly before her death.”He looked at me with guilt and affection in his eyes. “When I finally found Jason, he was already married. I chose to remain in the background so I wouldn’t disrupt his life. I watched over him in silence.“Every bit of support Longwind Corp gave Wendy’s company over the years was arranged by Jason. Without him, her company would have collapsed long ago.”Wendy looked shocked. She staggered back and hit a dining table.“No… this can’t be…” she whispered. “Those partnerships… those opportunities… they were all from you…”“They were all from Jason,” Calvin said coldly. “You didn’t know how to cherish them. You betrayed his goodwill and plotted against him with this heartless m

Both of them froze.Matthew grew impatient. “What does that have to do with you?”I looked at Wendy and said slowly, word by word, “Because I’m the new CEO of Longwind Corp.”…The banquet hall fell silent for a moment.Laughter broke out.Matthew doubled over laughing. “My god, Jason. Has the divorce driven you insane? If you’re the CEO of Longwind Corp, I must be the president.”Wendy shook her head. There was pity in her voice. “Jason, I know the divorce hurt you deeply, but you really need to see a doctor. Do you honestly think someone like you could become the CEO of Longwind Corp?”The guests whispered among themselves. “Is he crazy?” “He must have lost it after the divorce.” “How pitiful.”Matthew wiped the tears from his eyes after he finished laughing. “Enough, Jason. Stop humiliating yourself. If you claim to be the CEO, where’s your invitation? Even a CEO needs an invitation to attend an event like this.”Everyone looked at me.I asked calmly, “Do I need an

I opened the door. Matthew was standing there, dressed head to toe in designer clothes, completely out of place in the run-down hallway. He exaggeratedly covered his nose. “Wow, what’s that smell? Jason, do you actually live in such a place?”I did not answer. I just looked at him calmly.Matthew walked inside on his own and scanned the modest living room. “Wow, this couch came from a second-hand market, right? That TV is smaller than my microwave. I never thought you would end up like this.”I watched him cautiously. “What exactly are you trying to do?”“I came to tell you that next Saturday night, River City International Hotel will host a business dinner. Wendy is negotiating a fifty-million-dollar deal with Longwind Corp.”He paused and studied my reaction. “Longwind Corp is one of the top companies in River City. It’s a level Wendy could not even dream of before. But now it’s different. Longwind Corp came to her. If this deal goes through, Wendy’s company could be worth at l

Matthew sneered. “What big gift can you possibly give us now? Don’t tell me it’s that old, tiny apartment of yours.” Wendy laughed too. “Jason, stop acting tough. You have nothing. We all know it.”I ignored their taunts. I reached into my handbag, took out a document, and placed it on the table.“This is a notarized release of all claims,” I explained. “I give up all claims to Xeno’s school district property. I also promise not to pursue any legal claims related to your affair, as well as the child born from it.”Both Wendy and Matthew froze. The other guests fell silent. They stared at me in surprise.“You… what did you just say?” Wendy asked in disbelief as she reached for the document. The document said exactly what I had claimed. It had my signature in black and white along with the notary’s seal.Matthew leaned in. His eyes lit up for a moment, but caution quickly replaced the excitement. “Jason… are you really doing this? Is there some kind of trap in the document?”

Wendy smiled and chatted with the guests while Matthew stood like the host and greeted everyone.Xeno moved among the guests like a little prince and enjoyed all the praise and gifts. After several rounds of drinks, Wendy decided it was time. She took Matthew and Xeno by the hand and walked to the center of the living room.“Everyone, thank you for coming to our housewarming party. Today is also a day for our family to come together.”Applause and laughter rose from the crowd.“I want to take this opportunity to say something I have kept inside for many years. It must be said.”Wendy’s tone grew stern.“My marriage to Jason has been a mistake from the start. The person I truly love is Matthew!”Her voice rose. “We have loved each other for many years, but for various reasons, we couldn’t be together. Even our child had to be raised by someone else and suffer separation from his real parents!”The guests gasped in shock.Matthew lowered his head at the right moment and wiped i
