Chapter 4

Author: Mohini
I'd been living inside one massive lie this whole time.

Seeing my bloodshot eyes, Kate smiled smugly. Then, right in front of me, she slipped the shoes onto her feet.

As Oliver's and Tim's footsteps drew closer, she suddenly screamed, "Ow! Sienna, why would you put a thumbtack in my shoe?"

The two men kicked the door open and burst in.

"Kate!"

Oliver carefully eased off her ballet shoe. Sure enough, a thumbtack was stuck in her foot, smeared with her blood.

"Sienna, you still can't stand Kate? I see you haven't fixed that rotten attitude of yours!"

Tim yanked me over and slapped me hard across the face. "Did you throw everything Mom and Dad taught you to the dogs? You have no manners at all!"

Immediately, the coppery taste of blood spread through my mouth.

I stubbornly glared into his eyes. "I didn't put a thumbtack in her shoe. She did it herself!"

He froze. Kate immediately dropped to her knees and pressed her forehead to the floor in front of me. "Sienna, if you say it was me, then it was me. I'll do whatever you say.

"Just please don't treat me like this anymore. I'll never dance again. I'll give you every honor I've ever won, okay?"

Oliver hurried to help her up and glared at me viciously. "You still dare to argue? Tell me, what did you threaten Kate with? Do you want me to send you back to prison?"

In the heat of the moment, he didn't even realize what he'd let slip. All he cared about was whether a few more tears had rolled down Kate's face.

All at once, my face turned ghostly pale. Beads of sweat as big as peas formed on my forehead and dripped onto the floor one after another.

My vision blurring, I fumbled for my pill bottle, but a leather shoe stomped down on it.

Seeing that the label identified the medication as a painkiller, Oliver's lips stiffened. He tipped the pills onto the floor and ground every last one to powder under his heel. "You think you can fool us with painkillers? If you're really suffering, Sienna, prove it!"

With that, he waved someone over to pour an entire box of thumbtacks into the ballet shoes, then forced them onto my feet.

My bloodcurdling scream echoed through the entire dance studio.

The pain inside my body and the pain in my feet hit me like ten thousand arrows at once. I wished I were dead.

Through my blurring vision, all I could see were their backs as the two of them escorted Kate away.

After they left, the men who'd kidnapped me back then showed up one after another. They forced me to dance for them in those tack-filled shoes.

Gritting my teeth, I stood and was made to spin in place.

The floor was covered in blood.

The studio's big screen showed Oliver gathering the city's top doctors to examine Kate together. "If this wound keeps Kate out of the competition, I'll tear this hospital apart!"

Tim kept texting me, telling me to go die somewhere far away and not show my face before Kate's competition.

Looking at my reflection swaying in the mirror, on the verge of collapse, I smiled, finally at peace.

When I woke up again, the specialist I knew best was standing over me.

He said a lot of things to me and told me not to be afraid.

Those might have been the last kind words I'd ever hear in this world.

Around the corner in the hallway, a crowd of reporters swarmed Kate, interviewing her about the upcoming dance competition.

Oliver and Tim flanked her, one on each side like a pair of devoted bodyguards, smiling at her with a tenderness in their eyes I'd never seen before.

But when they saw the doctor hurriedly wheeling me past, the color drained from their faces. Their voices came out hoarse, as if squeezed from their throats. "Sienna?

"Where... where are you taking Sienna?"

I had no strength left to answer. I gave them one disappointed look, then let my eyes fall shut completely.

With Oliver and Tim on Kate's side, she'd always felt untouchable and had done whatever she wanted to me.But now, I wasn't going to put up with it anymore.Kate clenched her jaw, her face blotchy and pale with rage. "Sienna, why don't you just die? Why do you have to keep living and steal my life?"She stamped her feet, falling apart.I understood how she felt, of course. She'd been the little princess for nearly ten years. Being abandoned by the two men who'd always treated her so well was practically killing her.But what about me? I'd suffered for so many years. Who was I supposed to cry to?I looked at her, expressionless. "If you want them so badly, take them. You think I'm dying to fight you for them? They're right outside the gate. Go find them."I meant to leave after that, but Kate grabbed me, her eyes red. "Are you taunting me? What do you have to be so smug about?"I couldn't be bothered to deal with her, so I shoved her hard to the ground. Before I knew it, she'd

Tim caught my meaning and fell silent. It took him a long while to speak. "It's my fault for trusting the wrong person. Kate is nothing but a schemer. She wanted to use Oliver and me to take your place."I was wrong, okay? I'm sorry. I'll never see her again."A belated apology was truly meaningless.Oliver yanked Tim aside and appeared in front of me. "Sienna, I can see it now too. Kate has ulterior motives. She's not nearly as innocent as she looks."Don't worry. No matter what, I'll marry you. No matter how you look, whether your illness is cured or not..."I slapped his hand away hard. "I don't want it!"For five years in prison, I'd lived in constant fear, secretly crying every time I looked at the scars on my face.I'd been afraid Oliver wouldn't want me anymore, that he'd be repulsed by how I looked and by the fact that I'd been in prison. But right now, the one who truly deserved to be despised was him!"You don't have to act all noble. You think I'd actually want to

"Don't listen to them! I have nothing to do with them anymore. I want euthanasia!"I didn't understand. Why wouldn't Oliver and Tim let me have my way? They'd never wanted me alive in the first place!Did they want to punish me now too, leaving me in so much pain I'd be better off dead? The doctors scrambled around me, checking my vital signs and giving me a painkiller injection. But no one said a word about euthanasia.I was about to call Tim when he and Oliver burst into the hospital room almost at the same moment."Sienna!""Are you okay? You look like you're in so much pain..."Oliver immediately whirled around and yelled at the doctors, "I told you to use the best painkillers! Where are they?"Tim clutched my hand tightly, sobbing his heart out. "Baby sister, just hang on a little longer..."As far as I could remember, he hadn't called me "baby sister" since Kate came into our family. Before, I would've been thrilled. But now, it only made me sick."Let go! Tim, I'm cu

Kate thought she could brush it off, but Oliver grabbed her by the throat. "By accident? You think we didn't hear what you just said?"You wanted to drive Sienna out and take her place as the Blanden heiress! Isn't that right?"You're also the one who framed her for scalding your face!"In Tim's eyes, Kate's face grew more and more hateful. Unable to hold back his fury, he said, "We agreed this would stay secret. You know how serious this is. Sienna is going to hate us!"Trembling, Kate looked at the two men in front of her. She'd never imagined they would react so strongly. She'd thought that over the years, she had completely won both their hearts. After all, they'd been willing to have Sienna kidnapped for her sake, and had even sent Sienna to prison. Now, she'd only told the truth, and they'd turned on her for it. She couldn't make sense of it.Kate's eyes were full of resentment. "She's dying anyway. What does it matter whether she knows the truth or not? Don't I matter

With that, the doctor walked off without looking back.Oliver stood frozen in shock. "How could she have a terminal illness? She's the Blanden heiress. What illness couldn't she get cured? Why..."The next second, Tim grabbed him by the collar. "Was it you? Did you set this up? Did you push her into euthanasia?""What the hell are you talking about?"Oliver pulled free of his grip in annoyance, his brow tightly furrowed. He turned his head to look at Sienna through the glass, his eyes rimmed with red.Even if she had a terminal illness, she shouldn't die now.The Blandens had money, and the Edmonds were the wealthiest family in all of Llavonia. He couldn't understand why Sienna would choose euthanasia."No. No way. She can't go through with euthanasia, no matter what!"He tried to force his way in like a madman, but several staff members blocked him. "Sir, please calm down. The patient is very weak. She can't handle any commotion."Oliver was on the verge of breaking down. "I

Oliver grabbed the hospital bed and roared again, "Where are you taking her? Why does she suddenly need to go into surgery?"The doctor remembered what Sienna had asked of him. After a moment's hesitation, he chose to keep her secret. "Ms. Blanden needs her appendix removed. Please step back and don't disturb the patient."Tim frowned. "Why would she need surgery out of nowhere? Making such a fuss over a little appendicitis. She's being so dramatic.""Forget it. Kate's competition is about to start. If we don't leave now, we'll be late."Oliver stayed rooted to the spot. Seeing Sienna's deathly pale face filled him with unease. Then Kate gently tugged at the hem of his shirt. "Oliver, you promised you'd be there for my competition. A real man doesn't go back on his word."Tim threw an arm around her, his eyes crinkling into a smile. "Of course he's coming. Let's go, let's go."Though Oliver still felt uneasy, he followed them anyway. At the competition venue, Kate waited backst
