"Where is it?"

My mother had my arm before I reached the dining room door. She didn't raise her voice. She never did. She steered me into the alcove under the stairs and kept hold of my sleeve, her nails pressing through the wool.

"Where is what?"

"The bracelet. Caleb's bracelet." She searched my face. "You said you'd keep it covered. It isn't covered. It isn't on you at all."

The lie came out before I had decided on it. "I took it off."

"Where is it?"My mother had my arm before I reached the dining room door. She didn't raise her voice. She never did. She steered me into the alcove under the stairs and kept hold of my sleeve, her nails pressing through the wool."Where is what?""The bracelet. Caleb's bracelet." She searched my face. "You said you'd keep it covered. It isn't covered. It isn't on you at all."The lie came out before I had decided on it. "I took it off.""Good." The tension went out of her shoulders. She let go and smoothed my sleeve flat, as if she owed it an apology. Then her eyes narrowed. "Your hair is wet.""I showered.""At this hour?""I couldn't sleep.""You look like you've been crying.""I haven't."She let that one go, which told me how worried she was about something bigger. "Mom, what is it?""Mrs. Ferrara's daughter has told three people that you left the ballroom with Caleb at eleven and never came back.""He was sick. I helped him upstairs.""Alone?""He didn't want a doctor. He didn't

  • My Step Brother's Midnight Obsession    He Said Her Name

I didn't turn around, because I couldn't make myself.I stood with one foot in the corridor and my hand on the door, and every nerve in my body was screaming at me to run. He had said my name. Not hers. Mine."Elise." It came again, slower this time, rough and cracked, like he was dragging the word up from the bottom of a well. "Don't go."My voice died in my throat. I had spent the whole night whispering I'm here , and now I couldn't make a single sound. If I turned around he would see my face, and if he saw my face, everything I had done in the dark would have a face."Come back." The bed creaked as he tried to sit up. "Please. My head... where's Vivienne?"That was what split me open. He had said my name and then asked for her, and I stood there with my heart tearing down the middle because I couldn't tell whether he had recognized me or only dreamed me, and both possibilities hurt in completely different ways.I turned around slowly. The gray light showed him half upright against

"Vivienne?" Caleb said from the bed, and his voice was slurred. "Is that you?”I stood with my back against the door in the pitch dark, and my heart was pounding so loudly I was sure he could hear it. The silver feathers of the mask brushed my cheek every time I breathed. My hand was still on the door handle, and I knew I could still turn around and leave, and every good thing I had ever been told about myself was begging me to do it.I didn't answer."Come here," he said. "Please. I don't feel right."I crossed to the bed. I didn't decide to. My legs just went. When I sat down, he found my arm in the dark and ran his hand up it until he touched my face. His fingers stopped at the edge of the mask, and I stopped breathing. I was sure he was going to pull it off and see me, and I couldn't tell whether I was more afraid of that or hoping for it.He didn't pull it off. He only moved his thumb slowly along my jaw."You're shaking," he said.I shook my head."If you don't want this, tell m

  • My Step Brother's Midnight Obsession    THE MASK SHE SHOULD NEVER HAVE WORN

Caleb was waiting at the bottom of the east staircase, and one look at my face told him I had been crying.I had spent forty minutes fixing it. Powder, a cold spoon against my eyelids, a long breath at the mirror. In eight years it had never once worked on him.He stood with his hands in the pockets of a black dinner jacket, and the lamplight in the hall did what it always did, catching the sharp line of his jaw. "What happened?""Nothing. It's dust. The east wing is full of it.""Dust doesn't make you cry for an hour." His voice dropped. "Elise."I wanted to tell him. My mother is sending me away and I'll never see you again. The words sat right behind my teeth. But my mother had said not until after the party, and I had already said okay to everything else that day, so I did what I always did. I smiled."I'm fine. Really.""You're a bad liar.""I'm an excellent liar. I've had practice."He didn't laugh. He watched me for a long moment, and I could see him weighing it, deciding to le

The box on my bed was wrapped in silver paper, and that was how I knew something was wrong.I had come straight from the station like the text ordered, still in my graduation gown, and my mother was waiting in my room with the box in her lap and her ankles crossed, the way she sat when she'd already decided how a conversation would end. My mother didn't give presents. In eight years, Rachel Moore had given me exactly one coat, the first winter, and only after Gerald noticed me shivering at dinner and raised an eyebrow."Sit," she said. "Open it. We don't have long."I sat on the edge of the narrow bed, still smelling cut grass and the sweat of the walk back. The villa roared around us. Caterers' trolleys rattled down the east corridor, someone shouted about chairs, and just outside my door two maids had stopped to whisper. Stepsister , one of them said, and laughed. My mother heard it. She didn't turn her head. The ribbon came loose in one pull. Inside was a cream envelope, and inside

  • My Step Brother's Midnight Obsession    THE HEIR WHO STOPPED THE ROOM

I had loved my stepbrother in silence for seven years, and he had never once noticed. Caleb Ashford looked at me and saw a sister, and he was gentle about it, which was the cruelest part. Everyone else in that house hurt me in ways I could brace for, but he hurt me without knowing it, every time he was kind.On the morning I graduated, I was on my knees in my room at the residence hall, taping my last box shut for the third time, when the noise from the courtyard changed. It didn't stop so much as rise in one spot, the way water starts boiling in a single place before the whole pot goes. Girls were squealing down there, somebody was chanting a name, and my stomach knew a half-second before my brain did that only one person could make a crowd sound like that.I kept to the side of the window where nobody below could see me, and looked down anyway. The courtyard had tilted. Forty people stood at angles toward the gate, where Caleb was walking in like the sun had followed him through it
