Elena's POV

“I can recommend you for their graduate recruitment process. You will still have to meet their academic requirements and pass their interviews. Your degree alone won't qualify you to practice as an attorney, so you'll also need to complete the required legal training and licensing process. But the firm has opportunities for qualified graduates to begin their careers while working toward their professional goals.”

My pulse quickened.

“You would really recommend me?”

“I wouldn't offer if I didn't think you had potential.”

He paused.

“My friend's son works there as well. Daniel Brooks. He's twenty-four and already a senior associate in the corporate transactions division. He has handled several significant acquisitions and is known for being sharp, disciplined, and difficult to impress.”

I raised an eyebrow. “Difficult to impress?”

Richard chuckled.

“Very. Don't let his age fool you. He earned his reputation through hard work. If you secure a position, he can help you understand the firm's expectations and guide you through the early stages of your career.”

Daniel Brooks.

The name settled somewhere in my mind like a small, unexpected weight. I had never met him. I knew nothing about him except what Richard had just said.

For the first time that day, something bright cut through the heaviness I had been carrying. A future that belonged to me. A career that did not depend on whether Adrian noticed me or defended someone else in front of me. An office where no one would expect me to stay quiet while another woman claimed the space I had never been allowed to occupy.

I smiled before I could stop myself.

“Thank you. Truly. That means more than I can say.”

Richard’s expression softened a fraction. “I’m glad to hear it.”

He continued talking, about timelines after graduation, about the kind of preparation I should begin now, about how the firm valued people who could think under pressure. I listened, nodding, asking a careful question here and there. The excitement stayed, warm and real.

Then, slowly, the rest of the day caught up with me.

Accepting the recommendation would mean leaving sooner after graduation. It would mean packing the few things that were truly mine, moving into that modest apartment, learning a new routine that did not include the sound of Adrian’s footsteps in the hallway or the way the light fell across the garden in the late afternoon. It would mean building a life where I no longer measured my worth by the moments he chose to protect me.

Everything I had told myself I wanted.

So why did the thought of it press against my ribs like something I could not quite breathe around?

I looked down at my hands. I remembered being sixteen and shaking after one of my father’s visits, and Adrian standing between us without hesitation. I remembered the gold necklace he had given me only days ago, the weight of it against my collarbone, the quiet way he had said it was so I would not forget I had people who cared. I remembered the way his voice softened when he thought no one was listening.

And then I remembered every time he had looked at Sophie’s carefully wounded expression and decided I was the one who needed to calm down.

Richard’s voice pulled me back. “What’s wrong? You don’t seem as excited as you were a moment ago.”

I forced the smile to stay in place. “Nothing. It’s a wonderful opportunity. I’m grateful.”

I paused.

The next words felt dangerous, almost selfish, but they came out anyway.

“Would it be possible to stay here a little longer after graduation? Just for a while. I’m not ready to leave the house yet. It’s been my home for years. I don’t want to decide something this big only because everything feels… heavy right now.”

Richard regarded me in silence. I waited for the firm refusal, the reminder that independence was non-negotiable. Instead he nodded once.

“If you want more time after you graduate, that is your decision. But understand this, Elena. You cannot put your entire future on hold because you are afraid of what comes next.”

The words landed deeper than he could have known. He had no idea that the person making the future feel frightening was the same person I had loved in silence for years. He had no idea that every plan I made still bent around the possibility of Adrian’s voice in the next room.

I swallowed. “I understand. I just need a little time. If I decide to leave after graduation and the opportunity is still open, I would like to take it.”

“Then the door stays open,” Richard said. “Think carefully about what you want. This is your life. You deserve to make something of it that belongs to you.”

For once, someone in this house was offering me a choice instead of deciding the shape of it for me. The gratitude that rose in my chest was almost painful.

“Thank you,” I said again, and meant it.

I stood, smoothed the front of my dress, and left the office. The hallway outside felt cooler. I walked slowly, letting the conversation settle. Corporate law.

Manhattan.

Daniel Brooks.

A desk that would be mine after the ceremony. A future that did not require me to sit across from Sophie and pretend her questions did not cut.

Perhaps leaving was the only way to stop measuring every quiet moment against the possibility that Adrian might one day look at me the way I had always looked at him.

Perhaps it was the only way to stop loving him at all.

I turned the corner toward my bedroom, already planning the list of things I would need to research before graduation, bar exam timelines, firm culture, and how to survive the first brutal year without collapsing.

Then a voice stopped me cold.

“Elena.”

I froze.

My heart did the same foolish thing it always did when it heard him, even after everything.

I turned.

Adrian stood a few steps away. His expression was unreadable, but his eyes moved over my face as though he had been looking for me and had finally found what he needed. There was none of the dismissive irritation from earlier in the day. Something else sat underneath, urgency, or maybe the beginning of something he had not planned to feel.

For a moment neither of us spoke.

Then he took one step closer.

“Where have you been?”

I frowned slightly. “I was with your father.”

His jaw tightened. “I know. I saw you leaving his office.”

I waited.

He did not explain why he had followed me, or why his voice sounded different. His gaze dropped briefly to my hands, then returned to my face.

“What’s this I hear about you leaving the mansion after graduation?”

The words hit harder than they should have. I had not told him.

I had not told anyone except Richard. Yet somehow the information had already reached him, and the tension in his shoulders said the thought of it mattered more than he wanted it to.

My heart stumbled once, then settled into a careful, guarded rhythm.

I lifted my chin. I would not let him see how much the concern in his voice still affected me. I would not give him that.

“Why, Adrian?” I asked quietly. “Would it make any difference to you if I left?”

Elena’s POVI turned so fast the room tilted.Victoria stood in the doorway, one hand still resting on the frame, the soft glow from the hallway spilling around her shoulders. Her silk robe was tied neatly at the waist, her hair loosely gathered, and her face was free of the careful makeup she usually wore for the household. For a second, she simply looked at me.At the way I stood beside Adrian’s bed. At my hands, still half-raised as though I had been about to touch him again. At the short black top and grey shorts barely covered by the hoodie I had hurriedly pulled back into place. My heart slammed against my ribs.“Mum.”The word came out thinner than I intended. She stepped inside without speaking and closed the door behind her. Her eyes moved towards Adrian, who lay sprawled across the mattress, one arm hanging loosely over the side. His breathing was heavy and uneven, and the sharp scent of alcohol still lingered in the room.I quickly spoke before she could ask anything.“I fo

Elena's POV“I don't understand why you need to question everything I do.”“Then help me understand.” He stepped closer. “Why are you dressed like that? Why are you carrying a bag? And why are you sneaking through the back door instead of walking out through the front like a normal person?”“Because I don't want to explain every little thing I do to you.”His expression hardened.“Watch your tone.”I let out a short, disbelieving laugh. “There it is.”“What?”“That voice. That look. The one you use whenever you think I'm doing something you don't approve of.”He stared at me.“Is that what you think this is?”“Isn't it?”He stepped closer, and I instinctively shifted backwards.“Answer my question, Elena. Where are you going?”“I already told you. For snacks.”“And I'm telling you I don't believe you.”“Then that's your problem.”His jaw tightened. He reached out and caught the edge of my hoodie, tugging it down just enough for the short black top underneath to become visible. Elena’s POVThe grey-blue dress hung in the wardrobe like a quiet promise. I had smoothed every fold, closed the door, and told myself that was enough for tonight. Tomorrow I would wear it and walk into the ceremony looking like someone who had been chosen, even if only for a handful of careful minutes by a stranger whose name I still did not know.Tonight was different.I sat on the edge of the bed with my phone in both hands, the soft instrumental playlist still playing low from the speaker. The screen glowed against the dim room. I hadn’t meant to open the app. My thumb had simply moved the way it always did when the house felt too quiet and my thoughts too loud.Sophie’s latest post was already at the top of my feed.Adrian and Sophie on the wide front steps of the mansion, late-afternoon light catching the gold of her hair and the sharp line of his jaw. His arm was around her waist. She was leaning into him the way she always did—soft, claimed, certain. The caption was short and

Elena's POV My breath caught. I read the two words again. Then a third time. The stranger’s voice rose in my memory, low, accented, the endearment spoken like it belonged only between us. *Come with me, Mi flor.* The way the words had wrapped around me in the middle of the crowded store, warmer than they should have been. A small, involuntary smile touched my mouth before I could stop it. I opened the packaging fully, careful not to tear the paper. The grey-blue dress lay folded inside with almost reverent care. The same soft fabric. The same clean lines. The same colour of early evening sky just before the streetlights came on. Beneath it, nestled in tissue paper, was the slim black jewellery box. I lifted the lid with careful fingers. The delicate gold chain and the small flower pendant rested against dark velvet, exactly as they had when he first opened the box in front of the tall mirror. I lifted the dress carefully, letting the fabric unfold against my arms. It whisp

  • My Stepbrother's Forbidden Love   Chapter Sixteen — I'm done

Elena's PovI shook my head. She didn’t scold. She simply moved to the refrigerator, pulled out a covered plate she must have set aside earlier, and slid it into the microwave. While it heated she poured a tall glass of cold orange juice and set it on the island in front of me. “Sit,” she said gently. “I kept this aside. Thought you might come down late.” The microwave beeped. She placed the plate in front of me,simple pasta with a light tomato sauce, the kind she knew I could manage when my stomach felt tight, and then took the stool across from me, not eating, just present. The quiet company of someone who had watched me grow up in this house and never once asked me to be smaller. “Is everything all right?” she asked after a moment, voice low. I nodded, eyes on the food. “Just tired.” She didn’t press. That was one of the quiet mercies of her presence. She had seen enough of this house over the years to know when silence was kinder than questions. I ate slowly. The food

  • My Stepbrother's Forbidden Love   Chapter Fifteen — Tired

Elena’s POV The car finally slowed as the iron gates of the Williams mansion parted with their usual soft electronic hum. Gravel shifted under the tyres in a familiar, grinding rhythm that had always meant home, even when home felt like a place I was only borrowing. Adrian parked with the precision he applied to everything that belonged to him. The engine settled into silence. Shopping bags rustled in the boot as one of the house staff began lifting them out. I didn’t wait. The second the vehicle stopped I pushed the door open and stepped into the late-afternoon air. It carried the first cool edge of evening, the faint scent of the garden’s late roses and cut grass drifting across the wide front lawn. I walked straight toward the double front doors without looking back. Behind me I heard Sophie’s light voice saying something soft and satisfied, the quiet click of her heels on the gravel, Adrian’s deeper murmur answering her. None of it belonged to me. Victoria stood just insi
