Chapter One: The Girl He Always Protected

Elena’s POV

“Oh my God, Elena! I’m so sorry!”

Sophie’s startled cry echoed through the sitting room just as red wine spilled across the front of my pale blue dress.

I froze.

My breath caught high in my throat. The wine dripped slowly down the bodice, seeping between my breasts, soaking the fabric against my stomach. I could feel every drop.

She immediately dropped the empty glass onto the table and rushed toward me, her eyes wide with exaggerated concern.

“Look at what I’ve done!” she gasped, pressing a hand over her mouth. “I’m such a mess today.”

I stared at the spreading stain, unable to believe what had just happened.

Sophie Bennett had been part of Adrian Williams’s life since childhood. At twenty-four, she was beautiful, wealthy, and effortlessly charming, the kind of woman people admired before she even opened her mouth. She and Adrian had grown up together, and their families had long expected their closeness to become something more permanent. Even when their relationship became complicated, Sophie had never stopped acting as though Adrian belonged to her.

But I knew a side of Sophie that most people never saw.

Sophie had been looking directly at me when she tipped the glass.

Yet now, she looked as though she might cry.

“Here, let me help you.” She reached for my dress, but I stepped back instantly.

My heels scraped softly against the polished floor.

Her hand froze midair.

For half a second something cold and flat moved across her face, annoyance, calculation, then it vanished. Her lower lip trembled. She lowered her gaze as if the rejection had wounded her.

“I was only trying to help,” she whispered. The words were soft, almost fragile. “You don’t have to look at me like that.”

“I didn’t say anything.” My voice came out quieter than I wanted.

“You didn’t have to.” She let out a shaky breath and pressed her fingertips lightly under one eye, as though holding back tears that weren’t quite there. “I know you don’t like me, Elena, but I never thought you’d accuse me of hurting you over an accident.”

An accident.

The word sat between us like a challenge.

Heat crawled up my neck. My pulse thudded in my ears.

Before I could answer, footsteps sounded in the hallway, firm, familiar, the measured stride I would have known anywhere.

Adrian appeared in the doorway.

Adrian Williams was twenty-five, the only son of Richard Williams, a billionaire businessman whose name carried considerable weight in New York's corporate circles. Tall, handsome, and effortlessly confident, Adrian had grown up surrounded by privilege. Women admired him, men wanted his approval, and people rarely questioned his decisions.

I had known him since I was fourteen, when my mother married his father and brought me into the Williams mansion. He became my stepbrother, but before that, he had been the boy who stood between me and my abusive father, the one person who made me feel safe when the rest of my world fell apart.

Unfortunately, he had never understood that the girl he protected had fallen hopelessly in love with him.

He filled the frame the way he always did: tall, dark hair slightly tousled, charcoal suit jacket open over a crisp white shirt. The afternoon light caught the sharp line of his jaw and the small scar near his left eyebrow. My chest tightened the same way it had since I was fourteen.

His green eyes moved from Sophie’s tearful face to the wine soaking my dress, then back again.

“What happened?”

Sophie suddenly turned toward him at once. Her entire posture shifted, shoulders softening, chin tilting down just enough to look vulnerable.

“Nothing, Adrian. Please, don’t make a big deal out of it.” She gave him a small, wounded smile. One hand rested lightly against her own collarbone. “I accidentally spilled my wine on Elena, and I think she’s upset with me. It’s my fault. I should have been more careful.”

She said the words so gently, so carefully, that anyone listening would have thought she was protecting me.

Then she looked down and blinked, letting a single shine of moisture gather at the corner of her eye.

Adrian’s expression softened. The hard line of his mouth eased.

And just like that, I knew whose side he would take.

Because Sophie never had to make herself look innocent.

She only had to make me look guilty.

My fingers curled into the damp fabric of my dress. The wet silk stuck to my thighs. Humiliation burned behind my eyes, hot and immediate.

“She threw it on me,” I said.

The words came out flatter than I intended.

Adrian’s gaze flicked to me. Something faintly irritated moved through his expression, the look he always wore when he thought I was being difficult.

“Elena.” My name in his mouth already sounded like a quiet reprimand. “Come on.”

Sophie lifted both hands, the picture of injured innocence. “I accidentally spilled a little wine. I didn't mean to.”

I felt the old instinct rise, the one that told me to shrink, to apologize, to make myself smaller so the room would stop looking at me. For years I had obeyed it. Today the cold wet fabric against my skin felt like proof that shrinking never stopped anything.

“She was looking right at me when she tipped the glass,” I said. My voice shook, but I forced it to stay standing. “It wasn’t an accident.”

Sophie let out a soft, wounded sound. She pressed her fingertips to her lips and turned slightly toward Adrian, as if seeking shelter.

“I don’t know what else to say,” she murmured. “I tried to apologize. I tried to help. If she wants to believe I did it on purpose…” She trailed off and gave a helpless little shrug.

Adrian ran a hand through his hair. The familiar gesture made something in my chest twist.

“Elena, Sophie doesn’t throw wine. You’re making a scene over an accident.”

The words slid between my ribs, clean and precise.

He hadn’t asked. He hadn’t even paused. He had simply chosen the easier version, the one where I was the problem.

I looked at him fully. The afternoon light caught the green of his eyes, the same shade as his father’s but warmer. Protectiveness had always lived in him like a second pulse. Today it felt selective.

“Why do you always do that?”
