Jennifer's POV

I didn't stop shaking until I'm three blocks from our apartment building.

The men Marcus left in charge dropped me off five blocks away, just like I asked. I didn't want them knowing exactly where I lived. I didn't want any connection between that night and my real life. So I made them pull over at the corner of Fletcher and Main, and I walked the rest of the way on legs that felt like they belonged to someone else.

The mask is still crushed in my fist. The lace bites into my palm. I should throw it away, but I can't seem to let go.

By the time I let myself in, it's almost five in the morning. I expect the place to be dark and quiet, Mom asleep on the couch like always, the TV still murmuring the late-night news.

It isn't.

Every light is on. The kitchen, the living room, even the hallway bathroom. And Mom is sitting at the kitchen table, wide awake, practically glowing with an energy I haven't seen in her for years. Two mugs of tea are already poured, steam curling up into the dim light, like she's been waiting for me specifically.

"Jennifer, thank god—" She's on her feet the moment I walk in, crossing the room in three quick strides and pulling me into a tight hug. "I couldn't sleep, I've been waiting, I have to tell you something—"

"Mom, it's five in the morning." My voice is hoarse from running. "What's going on? Are you okay?"

"I'm more than okay, sweetheart." She pulls back, and her eyes are shining with happy tears, the kind I haven't seen in years. "David proposed. Last night. And I said yes."

The words hit me like a physical blow. My stomach, already in my throat from everything that happened tonight, lurches violently.

"We're moving in with him," she continues, talking too fast, her hands shaking around her mug. "Today. It's happening, sweetheart. Him and his son—we're going to be a family. A real family. I know it's fast, but I am happier than I've been in years, and I need my daughter to be happy for me. Can you be happy for me, Jen?"

"I—today?" I can barely form words. "Mom, that's really sudden."

"I know. But we've been talking about it for weeks, and we just don't want to wait anymore. Life is short, Jennifer. And I want to spend whatever time I have left with someone who makes me feel alive." She squeezes my hands. "His son's name is Marcus. I haven't met him yet either, but David says he's a little guarded. And you'll have a brother—won't that be nice?"

The room tilts.

Marcus.

I heard that name shouted through gunfire less than an hour ago. I felt it whisper against my skin in that private room. I heard it in a hallway soaked in red emergency lights. But maybe it's just a coincidence. It's a common name. It has to be a different Marcus. It can't be the same man.

"Jennifer?" Mom's face clouds with concern. "You've gone completely pale. Are you okay?"

"I'm fine." The lie is automatic. "Just tired. Long night at work."

Mom accepts this with a relieved nod, launching back into her excited chatter about the move, about David, about how beautiful his house is. I nod along on autopilot, making the right sounds at the right intervals.

Marcus. It's probably not him. It can't be him.

By the time the sun comes up, I've agreed to the move. I've packed my bags. I hugged my mother and smiled like I'm happy for her.

And then we're in a car, driving across the city, and I'm watching my old life disappear in the rearview mirror.

The house is beautiful.

White stone and dark wood, a long driveway lined with manicured hedges, a fountain in the front yard. The kind of house that belongs to people who've never had to choose between rent and medication.

David is standing in the doorway, silver-haired and distinguished, his smile warm as he sweeps my mother into his arms. For a moment, I almost feel happy for her.

Then he pulls back, his eyes landing on me.

"And you must be Jennifer." He extends his hand. "Your mother has told me so much about you."

"Likewise." My voice comes out steadier than I expected. "Thank you for having us."

"Nonsense. You're family now." He gestures toward the house. "Come inside. I'll introduce you to Marcus."

My blood turns to ice. But I follow them through the front door on legs that feel like they belong to someone else. Marble floors, high ceilings, a staircase that curves up into shadow. Everything is clean, elegant and expensive. Mom keeps gasping, clutching David's arm, her eyes bright with tears.

"Marcus!" David calls out. "Come down here. I want you to meet your new sister."

A door slams upstairs. Heavy footsteps. Then he appears at the top of the stairs.

Dark hair. Dark eyes. Sharp jaw. That same coiled stillness from the club.

It's him.

My heart stops.

He walks down the stairs slowly, deliberately, his eyes sweeping over me with something I can't quite read. Then his gaze moves to my mother, and his expression twists into pure disgust.

"Absolutely not."

David's smile falters. "Marcus—"

"I told you I didn't want this." His voice is cold, flat. "I told you I wanted no part of whatever this is. And now you're bringing strangers into my house?"

"They're not strangers. This is Jennifer and her mother. They're family now."

"Family?" Marcus laughs, but there's no humor in it. "I don't even know them. And you expect me to just accept this? Accept her?"

He looks at me again, and this time I see it’s clearly disgust. Contempt. Like I'm something he scraped off the bottom of his shoe.

"Marcus, that's enough." David's voice is sharp now. "You will treat them with respect. This is my home too, and I've made a decision. You don't have to like it, but you will be civil."

Marcus stares at his father for a long moment. Then he looks back at me, his eyes cold.

"Don't get comfortable," he says. "This won't last."

He grabs a jacket from the coat rack and heads for the door.

"Where are you going?" David demands.

"Anywhere but here." The door slams behind him.

I stand frozen in the foyer, my heart pounding, my palms sweating. He didn't recognize me. Of course he didn't—I was wearing a mask, the lights were blinding, he saw me for maybe twenty minutes in a dark room. He has no reason to connect the masked dancer to the girl standing in his foyer.

But he hates me anyway.

"Jennifer, sweetheart, I'm so sorry." Mom is beside me, her hand on my arm. "He's just... he takes time to warm up to people. David warned me."

"Right." My voice comes out hollow. "Time."

I look at the door Marcus just walked through, and I feel something twist in my chest. Relief that he didn't recognize me. Horror that this is my life now. And underneath it all, a strange, sinking disappointment.

He looked at me like I was nothing.

Jennifer’s POV“Row twenty-four, seats A and B,” David said smoothly, sliding two blue boarding passes across the polished table toward us. “I think it’s important for you two to stay grounded. Humility is a valuable virtue, Jennifer.”I stared down at the small cards in complete disbelief, my jaw dropping slightly as the realization sank in.“Economy? You’re putting us in the back of a commercial flight while you and Mom sit in First Class?”“It’s good for you,” David replied calmly, picking up his espresso cup without a single shred of remorse. My mother gave me a quick, helpless look from beside him, nervously smoothing down her designer coat.“David is right, honey. It’s just a short flight, and besides, it gives you two a chance to bond without us hovering over you.”“Bonding in Economy,” I muttered under my breath, my hands clenching into tight fists on my lap. “Unbelievable.”“I think it’s a fantastic idea, Dad,” Marcus chimed in from right beside me, picking up both boarding p

Jennifer’s POVThe door clicked shut, leaving me alone in the suffocating silence of my bedroom. My mother’s harsh, desperate words still echoed in the corners of the room, hanging in the air like heavy smoke."Be the perfect daughter for once."I let out a long, shuddering exhale, running both hands through my hair as I sank onto the edge of the bed. Every muscle in my body felt stiff, wired with a toxic mix of exhaustion and white-hot anger. Perfect daughter. That was all anyone ever wanted from me…a silent, compliant accessory to David’s grand facade. I hated this house. I hated the forced smiles, the endless games, and the way David acted like he owned every breath I took. Most of all, I hated how completely trapped I was. Aspen wasn't going to be a vacation; it was going to be an isolation chamber. Seven full days locked in a mountain estate where David could control every move and Marcus could torment me at every turn.A quiet knot of panic tightened in my chest. I stood up slow

Jennifer’s POV"David, no…please, not that one," I blurted out, my voice laced with panic as I stared at the high-definition preview on the monitor. "I’m glaring right at him! It looks... it looks completely hostile.""Hostile?" David echoed with a crisp, dismissive laugh, placing a broad hand on my mother's shoulder. "Not at all, Jennifer. It looks raw. It looks like intensity and passion. It has character.""It looks like I want to tear his throat out," I muttered under my breath, my jaw clenching as Marcus stepped up right behind me, his chest almost brushing my shoulder."I think Dad has excellent taste, stepsister," Marcus purred smoothly into my ear, his tone dripping with mock affection. "It captures our relationship perfectly, don't you think?""This is the one," David declared firmly, tapping his finger against the photographer's screen before I could hurl another protest. "Frame it in gold for the main foyer. I want every guest who enters this house to see it.""David, reall

Jennifer’s POV"I don't want to stand behind Marcus," I blasted, using that as a perfect excuse. I wasn't going to let this work out as perfectly as they expected."You don't get to choose where you stand, Jennifer," David said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, low rumble as he flashed a tight, apologetic smile toward the photographer. "Sit in the chair and smile. We are not wasting this man's time with your childish outbursts.""I'm just saying…" I tried to counter, standing my ground. But my mother quickly stepped forward, cutting me off with a desperate, pleading look."Please, honey," my mom whispered, nervously clutching her hands together. "Just sit down so we can get this over with. Don't make things worse than they already are."Before I could argue with her, Marcus took a slow, deliberate step forward."It's fine, Dad," Marcus chimed in, his tone sickeningly smooth and perfectly measured. "If my stepsister is so uncomfortable standing behind me, I can stand right behind h

Jennifer’s POV"I told you yesterday, Dad, my schedule is completely full," Marcus said, his voice dropping into a hard, unyielding tone as he set his coffee cup down with a sharp clink. "I have two major client meetings in the city tonight. I am not canceling them for a photo shoot.""You will cancel them, or you will reschedule them," David replied smoothly, taking a deliberate sip of his juice without looking up from his paper. "The photographer is booked for seven sharp.""It's non-negotiable," Marcus spat, his dark eyes flashing with rare, genuine irritation as he glared across the table. "We already discussed this.""Tonight?" I chimed in, my voice laced with pure disbelief before Marcus could even fire off his next word. "You're locking me under house arrest, threatening to take my spare keys, and now you expect me to dress up and fake a smile for a camera?""You don't have a choice in the matter, Jennifer," David said, his eyes shifting coldly toward me. "Your opinion on this

  • My Stepbrother’s Masked Obsession   35

Jennifer’s POVI stood frozen in the doorway, staring down the dark, empty hallway where Marcus had vanished just seconds ago. His parting words echoed in my ears like a sinister, relentless loop."You fucked up, Jennifer. And until you realize what you did wrong, I am going to make sure this house is a living hell for you, and that's a promise."I backed into my bedroom, turned the deadbolt with a sharp, metallic click, and pressed my forehead against the cold wood. My knees gave out, and I slid down the back of the door until my hips hit the hard floorboards."What did I do?" I whispered into the quiet darkness, my voice trembling with a mixture of rage and terror. "What crime could I have possibly committed against you, Marcus?"My mind raced through every interaction, every word, every glare we had exchanged over the past month. I had stayed out of his way as much as possible. I had endured his cruel coldness at home. I had swallowed my pride when David brought us under his roof.
