           ✦ 𝐉𝐔𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐍 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐓 ✦

I woke up before my alarm even had a chance to go off on Saturday morning.

The house was completely, strangely quiet. I sat up slowly, resting my elbows on my knees as I looked around my room. The space felt entirely different today. My old wooden desk was completely bare, the high shelves that used to hold rows of finance textbooks were empty, and the walls where my old high school photos used to hang were nothing but blank plaster and tiny nail holes. Most of my life was already packed away into three heavy cardboard boxes sitting by the closet.

There was a strange, heavy tug of nostalgia in my chest as I looked around, but remarkably, there wasn't any regret.

A soft, hesitant knock sounded at my door, and it pushed open a few inches. My mom stepped inside, already wearing her silk dressing gown, her hair pinned up neatly for the ceremony. She looked beautiful, but her eyes were wide with a mix of nervous energy and pure excitement.

She looked at me sitting on the edge of the mattress and gave me a soft, searching smile. "Ready, sweetie?"

I swallowed down the slight lump in my throat, standing up and reaching for my suit jacket on the hanger. I smiled back, letting out a steady breath. "As ready as I'll ever be, Mom."

The ceremony itself was small, simple, and completely lacking the over-the-top drama of a massive commercial wedding. We held it in a quiet, sunlit garden chapel on the edge of town, with only a handful of close friends and family filling the wooden pews.

I didn't pay attention to the floral arrangements or the exact shade of the table linens. My eyes were completely fixed on my mom. When she walked down the short aisle, her hand trembling slightly against my arm, I saw Richard’s expression completely crumble. He looked so genuinely emotional, his eyes instantly bright with tears as he reached out to take her hand from mine.

As they stood at the altar exchanging their vows, my mom choked up, her voice wavering on the final promises. I watched her from the front row, noticing the way her shoulders relaxed the moment Richard squeezed her fingers to steady her. She was smiling in a way I hadn't seen since I was a kid. It was a deep, completely untroubled happiness—the kind of peace she had sacrificed for twelve long years just to make sure I had everything I needed.

Seeing that smile completely cleared away the last lingering doubts in my mind. She was happy. That thought brought me a profound sense of peace.

From the other side of the altar, I noticed Xavier’s quiet presence. He was standing as Richard’s best man, perfectly still and composed in a dark suit. But as always, he was quietly taking care of everyone without making a scene. When my mom tore up during the ring exchange, Xavier seamlessly reached into his breast pocket and passed a crisp handkerchief to his father, who gratefully handed it to her. Later, when Richard fumbled his notes for a brief second, Xavier was already there, subtly tilting the small binder so his dad could read the text clearly under the bright sun.

No drama. No announcements. Just a steady, quiet awareness of the people around him.

He’s always watching everyone else before himself, I thought, keeping my eyes on his sharp profile until the minister finally announced them as husband and wife. It was strange. The boy I remembered had always been the first to notice when I scraped my knee climbing trees or forgot my lunch before school. Somewhere along the way, I'd convinced myself that version of Xavier had disappeared. Standing there now, I wasn't so sure anymore.

The reception was a casual, warm blur of laughter and clinking glasses held in the chapel’s courtyard.

Leo showed up in a surprisingly sharp navy suit, immediately sliding into the crowd and helping the staff carry extra folding chairs into the shade without being asked. Within ten minutes, he had already made my mom laugh so hard she had to wipe her makeup, and he was currently leaning against the buffet table talking to Richard.

"Julian, come over here for a second," Richard called out cheerfully, spotting me near the punch bowl.

I walked over, adjusting my tie slightly. Richard immediately clapped a heavy, warm hand onto my shoulder, turning to introduce me to an old college friend of his who had just arrived.

"This is my son, Julian."

For just a second, my eyes drifted across the courtyard. Xavier was already looking at us. There was something unreadable in his expression before he quietly looked away, giving his father and me that moment without interrupting it. No dialogue. Just Xavier watching.

There wasn't a single second of hesitation in his voice. He didn't say stepson, he didn't stumble over the word, and he didn't say it like it was a forced title. He just claimed me, simply and warmly. A sudden wave of surprise hit my chest, followed by a quiet, deep warmth. Richard wasn't trying to replace my past or erase anyone. He was just opening his arms and welcoming me into his life. It meant a hell of a lot more than I thought it would.

"Your dad’s a good guy," Leo murmured a bit later, stepping up beside me as we watched Richard drag my mom onto the small dance floor.

"Yeah," I admitted softly. "He really is."

I looked across the courtyard and noticed Leo had actually spent the last twenty minutes helping Xavier pack up the extra boxes of ceremony programs and loading them into the storage shed. I’d watched them from a distance—Leo cracking some ridiculous joke, and Xavier actually letting out a quiet chuckle, his cold mask completely dropping as they shook hands.

Leo followed my gaze and grinned, nudging my elbow. "See? I told you. Your boy Xavier isn't nearly as scary as he looks once you get him away from his brooding corner."

"He's not my boy," I muttered quickly, my face heating up instantly as I looked away.

Before Leo could tease me any further, the photographer clapped his hands together near the center garden. "Alright, everyone! Let's get a quick family photo before the sun drops entirely. Elena, Richard, boys, get over here!"

My mom waved us over frantically. I walked toward the floral archway, my heart rate doing that familiar, stupid spike as Xavier stepped out from the shade to join us. Richard stood in the center with his arm around my mom, and the photographer waved his hand at Xavier and me.

"Closer, guys," the man yelled from behind the lens. "You look like you're standing in different countries,Step in."

Neither of us said a word. We both hesitated for a fraction of a second, the space between us feeling suddenly charged. Then, Xavier took a deliberate step to his left, and I moved to my right.

Our shoulders came together, completely brushing through the fabric of our suits. I could feel the solid warmth of his frame right beside mine, the clean, familiar scent of him catching in the afternoon breeze. The camera flashed, the white light capturing the moment, but neither of us moved away immediately.

"Perfect," the photographer said with a satisfied grin. "Now that looks like a family."

I wasn't sure why those words lingered in my mind long after the camera flash faded. We just stood there for one long, silent second, our shoulders touching, before the crowd broke apart.

By nine in the evening, the celebration was over, and the emotional climax of the day hit me in the quietest way possible.

My mom and I drove back to our old house one last time to pick up our luggage and the final boxes. Walking through the front door was jarring. The living room was completely empty, the laminate flooring echoing loudly with every step we took.

My mom walked through each room quietly, her heels clicking against the bare floorboards. She stopped in the kitchen, touching the counter where she had packed hundreds of school lunches, and then stood in the hallway, looking at the faded square on the wallpaper where our calendar used to hang. She smiled, a stray tear sliding down her cheek, but she wiped it away quickly.

I helped her carry the last two suitcases out to the porch, but before I closed the front door, I stopped. I turned around, looking back into the dark, empty hallway one last time. Every memory of my childhood was trapped in those walls—the scraped knees, the late-night study sessions, the quiet mornings before school.

I reached out, clicked the wall switch, and watched the final light go out.

"Ready?" my mom asked quietly from the porch.

I looked at the dark house one last time before nodding.

"Yeah."

This time, I didn't look back. I pulled the heavy wooden door shut until the latch clicked firmly into place, walked down the steps, and left the childhood home behind.

Richard’s car was waiting at the curb, the headlights cutting through the dark, quiet neighborhood. The drive across town to the Cole house was silent, the weight of the transition settling over all of us in the vehicle.

When Richard pulled into the driveway, the large house looked warm, the porch lights spilling a soft, golden glow across the stone path and into the front entryway. Our heavy luggage had already been brought over by the moving truck earlier in the afternoon, sitting neatly in the main hall.

Richard unlocked the front door, stepping inside and turning around with a massive, tired smile. "Welcome home, guys."

I stepped across the threshold, my sneakers silent on the heavy rug. I stood in the entrance for a long moment, looking around the wide, high-ceilinged hallway. It was the exact same city. The exact same people. But my life was completely, irreversibly different now.

I looked up the wide wooden staircase, my eyes naturally drifting toward the top landing.

Xavier was already up there, wearing a comfortable black t-shirt, effortlessly lifting one of my heavy cardboard boxes of finance books into his arms. He paused halfway up the steps, his grey eyes looking down at me standing in the doorway. The cold, unreadable distance from a few weeks ago was completely gone, replaced by a calm, steady familiarity.

"Need a hand?" he asked quietly, his voice echoing softly in the high space.

A small, genuine smile broke across my face before I could even try to hide it. "Yeah," I said. "Thanks."

Xavier gave a single, solid nod. "Come on."

I picked up my remaining backpack from the floor, took a deep breath, and followed him up the stairs, listening to the quiet sound of his footsteps ahead of mine. Somewhere between leaving my old house behind and following Xavier into this new one, I realized something.

For the first time in twe

✦ 𝐉𝐔𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐍 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐓 ✦The morning sun hit the kitchen island in soft light, filtering through the blinds.I was leaning back against the counter with my mug, watching the steam rise off my coffee. My eyes kept drifting over to the spot near the sink where Xavier and I stood last night.I took a slow sip and shook my head.*I’m overthinking this,* I thought. *He was just being normal for once.*A few seconds later, footsteps sounded on the hardwood floor. Xavier walked into the kitchen wearing a dark hoodie and sweatpants. He didn't look at me right away, heading straight for the espresso machine."Morning," I said softly."Morning," he grunted, pressing the button on the machine.Usually, this was the part where one of us left the room to avoid the awkwardness. Instead, I stayed put. I picked up the pot of hot water I had just boiled and pointed toward his mug."Want some?"Xavier looked down at the mug, then up at me. He paused for a beat before sliding his cup closer. "Yeah. Tha

✦ 𝐉𝐔𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐍 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐓 ✦When I woke up the next morning, the very first thing in my head wasn't my morning alarm. It was the low sound of Xavier’s voice from the night before, sitting right in the quiet of my bedroom.*Some things are hard to forget.*I stared at the ceiling for a long minute, letting the words bounce around my head before I caught myself and let out a dry laugh. "Why are you even overthinking this?" I muttered to the empty room. It was just nostalgia. Xavier stepped out into the hallway, a dark towel slung over his shoulder, wearing sweatpants and a plain grey t-shirt.We both stopped dead in our tracks, hovering in the middle of the hall. The silence stretched for a second. I let out a dramatic sigh. "Race you?"Xavier's ga

✦ 𝐉𝐔𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐍 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐓 ✦The stairs creaked softly under my sneakers as I followed Xavier up to the second floor. The weight of my backpack pulled at my shoulders, but I kept my eyes fixed on his back as he carried the heaviest box of my finance books ahead of me like it was nothing. At the top of the landing, he turned down the left hallway and stopped outside an open door. He pushed it back with his foot, stepped inside, and set the box down near the closet before turning around to face me."This is you," Xavier said quietly, his voice dropping to match the stillness of the house. He pointed out toward the hallway. "The bathroom is the second door on the right. Laundry room is at the very end. If you have extra coats or stuff that won't fit in here, the linen closet out there is shared storage. There’s plenty of room."I stood in the middle of the bedroom, looking at the large window facing the dark backyard, then back at him. The room was nice—way bigger than my old

✦ 𝐉𝐔𝐋𝐈𝐀𝐍 𝐇𝐀𝐑𝐓 ✦Campus was practical chaos on Friday morning, which turned out to be exactly what I needed to keep my mind busy. I spent three straight hours in the department office sorting out the final recommendation letters for the vanguard fellowship. Between tracking down professors who were already checking out for the weekend and double-checking the code requirements on my submission portal, my brain was completely fried by noon.It wasn't until I was walking down the library steps into the warm afternoon sun that a sudden thought hit me, making me pause on the concrete. I hadn't thought about Xavier all morning. Not once.A wave of pure relief washed over me. I let out a slow breath I felt like I’d been holding for weeks, a small smile touching my lips as I pulled my backpack strap tighter over my shoulder. I wasn’t dreading the thought of seeing Xavier anymore. You’re just getting used to the situation, I told myself as I grabbed my clothes. It doesn't mean anything has actually changed between you two. But deep down, even I didn't fully believe it.Campus was incredibly busy, which turned out to be a good thing. I spent the morning in the computer lab, completely focused on the final data adjustments for my fellowship application.
