Chapter 3

Penulis: Sweet Pomelo Tea
I moved the email into an encrypted folder and took a cab to the marital home Natalie and I were supposed to share after our wedding.

Before leaving, I needed to collect my personal documentation and luggage.

When I entered the code, the lock beeped and stayed locked. I tried three times with the same result.

The property manager hurried over, looking embarrassed. "Ms. Natalie changed the locks yesterday. She changed the resident registration to Mr. Ryan's name, too."

My name was now on the list of people barred from the property instead.

I stood speechless in front of the door I had picked out myself, not sure what to say at all.

Natalie arrived half an hour later. She took one look at me. "Why did you follow us here?"

I stared at her. "Where are my things?"

She avoided my eyes. "I put them in the underground parking garage. Ryan recognizes this place, and living here will help him stay calm. Once he's fully recovered, I'll move everything back."

More than a dozen cheap-looking cardboard boxes were piled in the garage's trash area.

Books I had collected for years were damaged and swollen from the rain, and the picture frame Mom had given me when I reunited with the family had broken in two. In the photo, I stood among my family. My smile was hesitant but content.

Now, a crack separated me from the rest of them.

Natalie saw what I was looking at and frowned impatiently. "They're just a few books. I'll buy you new ones if they're damaged."

"And what about the money in our marriage account?" I asked, and her expression froze.

I opened my banking app in front of her. Of the 46,000 dollars we had saved together, only three-hundred and seventy dollars remained.

"Ryan wanted another custom suit," Natalie explained as she kept her voice down. "There's his ongoing treatment too, and the deposit on the hotel for the honeymoon. I'll pay you back once things settle down."

I stared at her. "You used my savings to buy him a suit and take him on a honeymoon?"

"I'm just playing along for now," Natalie said, her patience running out. "Leon, your brother nearly died saving your life. Why do you have to keep track of every tiny thing?"

My future home, my savings, and my fiancee had become the price of repaying him for saving my life. But… I was the only one expected to pay.

I said nothing more as I picked out the documents that hadn't been ruined by the water and pushed everything else, boxes and all, back into the trash area. The things I once could not part with no longer seemed so important.

Natalie grabbed my wrist. "What kind of tantrum are you throwing again now? I'm still going to marry you once Ryan's stable. He needs a fake wedding, and you want me. Is there a problem with that?"

I slowly pried her fingers away. "No. We won't have that problem again."

As I got into the cab, an alert from the smart home system appeared on my phone.

I had installed a camera in our marital home to keep an eye on the pets. Natalie had changed the locks but forgotten that the cloud account was still connected to my phone.

I opened the application.

Ryan was sitting on the sofa in my pajamas. He turned down the thermostat with ease, then took out the coffee I had hidden at the very back of a cabinet.

When his call connected, he sounded clearheaded and sure of himself.

"I remembered everything on the third day after I woke up. Who knew pretending to have amnesia would work this well? Leon's project is about to be mine, and the house and wedding are already mine."

I couldn't hear what the person on the other end said.

Ryan laughed so hard his shoulders were shaking. "It's not like they haven't noticed the holes in my story. They had just rather believed me than him."

The signing ceremony went ahead as scheduled. Beacon Tech had completed every technical test, and Summit Group's Liverian project officially began. Applause filled the venue when the contracts were exchanged. Peter stood beside me. "When I first invited you to join us, I thought I'd have to wait another six months. What made you change your mind so suddenly?" I looked toward the audience. "I finally understood that some places aren't homes, just habits that keep you trapped." Peter handed me the pen for the signing without asking anything else. "Then I'm glad you found your way out." When it was time for the team photograph, I instinctively started moving to the side. My colleagues laughed and pushed me into the center. "Leon, if you're not going to stand in the middle, who is?" The camera flashed. I did not step back again. In the photo, everyone had a relaxed smile on their faces. Nobody needed me to give up my place, and nobody told me that standing in the center m

The day before the signing of the project, Grant arranged for the last of my belongings to be returned. We met in a conference room at a notary's office. They had already been waiting for a long time when I arrived. On the table were an inventory, bank records, and several sealed boxes. Natalie had returned all the money I had contributed to our wedding account and paid for the damage to my books, picture frames, and suit. The signed agreement ending our engagement was placed on top. "I got the deposit back from the hotel meant for the honeymoon, too," she said quietly. "I also bought another suit exactly like the original." "There's no need," I said. I crossed that item off the list. "The suit someone else wore means nothing to me. Neither does a new one." Natalie looked down and said nothing else. Claire pushed the restored watch toward me. Its broken glass had been replaced, and the repaired mechanism was ticking again. It still had its original dial, cracks and all. D

Two months later, I flew back with Summit Group's team. Our new project was ready to launch, and the signing ceremony had been scheduled at the international conference center downtown. However, someone had apparently leaked my itinerary. Before the plane landed, my assistant told me that my family and Natalie were all waiting at the airport's arrivals area. I kept to our planned route and told the team to use the exit for business class passengers. When the doors opened, I saw them at once. Mom held a heavy coat. The weather had just turned cold, and she probably still remembered that I was scared of the cold. Claire held my work notebook. Dad stood at the back, his posture not as straight as it used to be. Natalie carried a bouquet of white roses. They had once been my favorite flowers. She had never remembered that in the three years we were engaged. Now that she did, it was too late. Mom stepped forward. "Leon, it's cold outside." My assistant helped me put on

Ryan did not show much sorrow on the day he was removed from his position. He simply took off his employee badge and knocked everything in his office off to the floor. "Happy now?" Claire stood in the doorway. "Taking credit for someone else's work and misleading the media are both grounds for firing you." "Oh, that sounds so, very noble," Ryan said as he pulled an envelope of documents from his drawer and threw it at Claire's feet. "You think getting rid of me will bring Leon back?" Inside were a notice withdrawing a board appointment and a draft agreement to place company shares in trust. A year after I was reunited with the family, Dad had intended to put me on the board and transfer five percent of the company's shares to me. After the accident, he had withdrawn the appointment and marked those shares for Ryan's trust instead. Dad had signed the documents. Claire's expression changed as she looked up. "Dad said he was only postponing it." Ryan sneered. "He lied to

After all the guests had left, my family remained at the hotel. The jacket was still lying in a heap on the stage. Dad sat in the front row. He suddenly looked so much older now. Mom covered her face. "Ryan was right. We didn't just find out today that he had just recovered his memory." Claire closed her eyes. In the third week after the accident, Ryan had correctly named the floor my office was on. I had only moved to that office after returning to the family. She had known something was wrong even then, but Ryan had cried and said he had only dreamed about it, so she had chosen to believe him. Mom had also noticed long ago how easily he opened the storage cabinet that had been changed during the renovation. And Natalie had known he had recovered at least part of his memory when he recited the new lock code to our house. Dad had seen the doctor's report from Ryan's checkup before the engagement party. It stated that Ryan had no ongoing memory impairment. They had not b

The day originally set for the engagement ceremony arrived. Ryan put on my suit early that morning. His eyes were red from crying. He had the stylist cover it up with makeup and insisted on opening the banquet hall. "The invitations have already gone out, so we can't let everyone laugh at us." By the time Natalie reached the hotel, plenty of guests were already seated. Ryan approached her, adjusting his cuffs. "Natalie, I know you've been upset lately. After the ceremony, we'll go find Leon together. If we all talk to him, I'm sure he'll come home." Natalie looked at the suit. The red wine stains along the bottom had been cleaned off, and the missing buttons had been replaced. But she still remembered me asking her how I looked when I first tried it on. She had been busy replying to work messages and said absent-mindedly, "They're all the same." Now she understood that they were not. With someone else wearing the suit, the ceremony could never be the same. "The ceremony
