Chapter 4

Penulis: Sweet Pomelo Tea
I watched the footage three times.

I downloaded the original video and made two backup copies.

I no longer expected Natalie to come back to me. But Joseph and Tina… They were still my biological parents.

They might have given in out of sympathy or blinded by gratitude to the man who had saved me, but surely they would not keep treating me this way once they saw the evidence?

I returned to the Wellington residence with my laptop.

Everyone was in the living room. Ryan was holding my mom's arm as they picked out wedding invitations, while my dad and Claire were discussing the project. Natalie was sitting beside him, peeling grapes for him.

I connected my laptop to the television. "Watch this. Then I want an explanation."

The footage began playing. Ryan's laughter filled the living room. Nobody spoke.

Claire moved first. She rushed over and unplugged the television.

The last image on the screen before it went black was Ryan's smug face. "Why do you still have access to the house's security footage?"

Dad's expression was dark. "Who else has seen this video?"

As I looked at them, what little hope I had began to fade. "Aren't you going to ask why he pretended to lose his memory?"

Without warning, Mom walked up to Ryan and slapped him hard across the face. The slap rang through the room. Ryan covered his cheek as tears sprang to his eyes.

I stood frozen. For the first time in three months, someone had taken my side.

Ryan dropped to his knees and clung to my mom's legs. "I was just scared! I was afraid you wouldn't want me anymore if I told the truth! Mom, ever since Leon came back, I have been afraid of you abandoning me. I really can't lose this family!"

Mom raised her hand, then rested it on his head. "Get up."

She helped Ryan to his feet and pulled him back into her arms. "I slapped you because you lied, but you still saved Leon's life."

My throat tightened. "And? He got his memory back and still kept my identity in the family and even my job. You even took over my engagement party with Natalie for a performance just for him. Aren't you going to give me an explanation?"

Dad spoke in a low growl.

"The engagement party is over, and the company has publicly named Ryan as our son. Exposing this now would only make our family a laughingstock. Our business partners are watching this project. If we admit Ryan was pretending to have amnesia all along, who would ever trust us again?"

Claire finally admitted she had noticed that Ryan remembered things from after I came home.

Natalie spoke at last. "I told you nothing is going to change about our engagement. Once Ryan's situation is resolved, we'll still go ahead with our wedding."

She looked at me calmly, as if that could erase everything that had happened at the engagement party.

They had known something was wrong all along. Not one of them had been willing to expose him.

Mom took out her phone and drafted a public statement right in front of me. According to the statement, Ryan had only gradually recovered his memory after the engagement party.

He would still be the only son the family acknowledged in public. The plans for the wedding and the project would stay the same. As for me, I was expected to keep playing the same absurd role…

An orphan the family financially supported.

"Leon, you're our biological son." My mom's eyes filled with tears as she pleaded. "You'll always be our son, blood is stronger than water. Why do you have to fight Ryan over all this?"

I looked at her for a long time. "I understand now."

They all breathed a sigh of relief. None of them understood what I meant.

I went back to my old room, which had already been emptied. A dust cover lay over the mattress, and only a few empty hangers remained in the closet.

I didn't leave right away. I lay on the dust cover, staring at the overseas flight booking on my phone.

One way.

Five days earlier, I had still thought I might come home someday.

Now, I canceled the seat I had tentatively reserved for a return flight.

At midnight, the family's official account published its statement. Ryan had regained his memory. The wedding would proceed as planned.

My name did not appear anywhere.

The signing ceremony went ahead as scheduled. Beacon Tech had completed every technical test, and Summit Group's Liverian project officially began. Applause filled the venue when the contracts were exchanged. Peter stood beside me. "When I first invited you to join us, I thought I'd have to wait another six months. What made you change your mind so suddenly?" I looked toward the audience. "I finally understood that some places aren't homes, just habits that keep you trapped." Peter handed me the pen for the signing without asking anything else. "Then I'm glad you found your way out." When it was time for the team photograph, I instinctively started moving to the side. My colleagues laughed and pushed me into the center. "Leon, if you're not going to stand in the middle, who is?" The camera flashed. I did not step back again. In the photo, everyone had a relaxed smile on their faces. Nobody needed me to give up my place, and nobody told me that standing in the center m

The day before the signing of the project, Grant arranged for the last of my belongings to be returned. We met in a conference room at a notary's office. They had already been waiting for a long time when I arrived. On the table were an inventory, bank records, and several sealed boxes. Natalie had returned all the money I had contributed to our wedding account and paid for the damage to my books, picture frames, and suit. The signed agreement ending our engagement was placed on top. "I got the deposit back from the hotel meant for the honeymoon, too," she said quietly. "I also bought another suit exactly like the original." "There's no need," I said. I crossed that item off the list. "The suit someone else wore means nothing to me. Neither does a new one." Natalie looked down and said nothing else. Claire pushed the restored watch toward me. Its broken glass had been replaced, and the repaired mechanism was ticking again. It still had its original dial, cracks and all. D

Two months later, I flew back with Summit Group's team. Our new project was ready to launch, and the signing ceremony had been scheduled at the international conference center downtown. However, someone had apparently leaked my itinerary. Before the plane landed, my assistant told me that my family and Natalie were all waiting at the airport's arrivals area. I kept to our planned route and told the team to use the exit for business class passengers. When the doors opened, I saw them at once. Mom held a heavy coat. The weather had just turned cold, and she probably still remembered that I was scared of the cold. Claire held my work notebook. Dad stood at the back, his posture not as straight as it used to be. Natalie carried a bouquet of white roses. They had once been my favorite flowers. She had never remembered that in the three years we were engaged. Now that she did, it was too late. Mom stepped forward. "Leon, it's cold outside." My assistant helped me put on

Ryan did not show much sorrow on the day he was removed from his position. He simply took off his employee badge and knocked everything in his office off to the floor. "Happy now?" Claire stood in the doorway. "Taking credit for someone else's work and misleading the media are both grounds for firing you." "Oh, that sounds so, very noble," Ryan said as he pulled an envelope of documents from his drawer and threw it at Claire's feet. "You think getting rid of me will bring Leon back?" Inside were a notice withdrawing a board appointment and a draft agreement to place company shares in trust. A year after I was reunited with the family, Dad had intended to put me on the board and transfer five percent of the company's shares to me. After the accident, he had withdrawn the appointment and marked those shares for Ryan's trust instead. Dad had signed the documents. Claire's expression changed as she looked up. "Dad said he was only postponing it." Ryan sneered. "He lied to

After all the guests had left, my family remained at the hotel. The jacket was still lying in a heap on the stage. Dad sat in the front row. He suddenly looked so much older now. Mom covered her face. "Ryan was right. We didn't just find out today that he had just recovered his memory." Claire closed her eyes. In the third week after the accident, Ryan had correctly named the floor my office was on. I had only moved to that office after returning to the family. She had known something was wrong even then, but Ryan had cried and said he had only dreamed about it, so she had chosen to believe him. Mom had also noticed long ago how easily he opened the storage cabinet that had been changed during the renovation. And Natalie had known he had recovered at least part of his memory when he recited the new lock code to our house. Dad had seen the doctor's report from Ryan's checkup before the engagement party. It stated that Ryan had no ongoing memory impairment. They had not b

The day originally set for the engagement ceremony arrived. Ryan put on my suit early that morning. His eyes were red from crying. He had the stylist cover it up with makeup and insisted on opening the banquet hall. "The invitations have already gone out, so we can't let everyone laugh at us." By the time Natalie reached the hotel, plenty of guests were already seated. Ryan approached her, adjusting his cuffs. "Natalie, I know you've been upset lately. After the ceremony, we'll go find Leon together. If we all talk to him, I'm sure he'll come home." Natalie looked at the suit. The red wine stains along the bottom had been cleaned off, and the missing buttons had been replaced. But she still remembered me asking her how I looked when I first tried it on. She had been busy replying to work messages and said absent-mindedly, "They're all the same." Now she understood that they were not. With someone else wearing the suit, the ceremony could never be the same. "The ceremony
