Chapter 4

Penulis: Stuart Paige
"I just want Mom to be safe and healthy."

Hearing this, my dad glared at me with pure anger. "What birthday? You're nothing but an eyesore. Get back to your room."

He dumped the pasta my mom had made into the trash. I never got to eat it.

Later, Gwen purposely came to my room, her words sharp as a poisoned knife.

"You still want to eat my mom’s pasta? You’re shameless.

"Why don’t you just die, you cursed wretch?"

Furious, I pushed her, and she hit her head against the door.

That night, my dad locked me in the basement for the first time, and it marked the beginning of my misfortune.

It was so dark. I was too scared to breathe and did not dare call out for my mom. All I could do was pound on the door with all my strength.

The nightmares would not leave me. It was as if I could hear the sound of clothes being torn apart.

I curled up in pain, calling out for my grandma over and over, begging her to come save me.

The fear overwhelmed me.

The next time I woke up, I was in the hospital, with my mom holding me.

But when I saw her, I instinctively shrank into the corner, terrified.

"I don’t want Mom, I don’t want Mom," I kept repeating.

I had forgotten that this was the first time she had ever held me on her own.

Her hand froze in mid-air, and her expression grew cold. "She’s just an ungrateful brat who can’t be raised right."

I was diagnosed with a fear of the dark, and she did not show any emotion. She just turned and left the hospital.

That night, I was almost consumed by regret.

Even digging my nails into my skin could not ease the despair and anxiety I felt.

From that point on, she became a mother who despised me even more.

When I went to college, Gwen decided she wanted her own study room. My mom did not hesitate. She threw away all my things and turned my bedroom into Gwen’s study.

They could not wait to get rid of me.

It did not matter anymore. Now that I was dead, I was never going back.

……

The next day, to cheer Gwen up, Orion gave her the keys to their new house. She happily brought the whole family to see it.

I followed behind my parents and Zac.

When we arrived at the new house, my parents sank into the couch, exhausted.

I listened to them talk about me again, criticizing everything I had ever done wrong.

"Kate is so out of line. She hasn’t even bothered to return a single call.

"I’ve failed as a parent, raising a daughter like that."

My mom glanced at her phone, seeing nothing but outgoing calls.

"It’s because she’s too heartless. She’s just an ungrateful brat. If she’s so tough, she should never come back," my dad said, holding my mom’s hand.

I watched their faces up close.

I wanted to see if, besides all the hatred, there was any trace of concern for me.

No matter how hard I looked, there wasn’t.

My dad rubbed his temples, clearly irritated just thinking about me.

My mom, with her eyes closed, let out a long sigh.

From the moment I went missing until now, not a single one of them had worried that something might have happened to me.

I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes. "Mom, just how awful am I, for you to hate me so much?"

Once, when she came to pick me up, I asked her in the car, "Mom, are you picking me up so late because you don’t love me?"

She did not answer. She just rested her head against the car window, not even glancing at me.

There was enough space between us for one person. She was on one side, and I was on the other.

I guess Grandma had been lying to me all along. My mom wasn’t good at all.

After I died, I finally understood. She just did not love me.

Frustrated, I wanted to leave. But when I floated to the door, something pulled me back.

"Mom, let me call her one more time. Don’t worry," Zac said as he dialed my number.

After three rings, someone picked up.

"Kate, you’ve gone too far. You ungrateful brat, why are you only answering the phone now? Are you trying to upset us on purpose?"

There was a moment of silence before a hoarse voice came through the other end of the line.

"She’s dead. But she kept begging me to save her."

The commotion even woke up Zac and Gwen next door."Zac, Kate really is a curse."She’s even driven Mom crazy, and now we have to rely on Dad for a solution." She muttered softly.Zac's expression darkened, but he did not say anything, nor did he disagree. This was my family. They could abandon me when I was born and dig me up after I died.My mom quieted down, no longer causing a scene. She walked into my room and turned on all the lamps. It was truly beautiful. After a while, she turned them all off again, and it was pitch black."Kate, I never realized how terrifying the darkness is."That night, I should’ve gone in further. Maybe then, you wouldn’t have died."Do you hate me?"Is this your way of wanting me to atone?"……Just as the first light of dawn broke, my dad was eager to head to the countryside. He could not stand another day like this.My mom calmly made breakfast. "This whole thing is too embarrassing. Let’s not trouble anyone else."Once we’re done eati

Because the price of having a mother was just too high.……When my mom heard the truth, she was completely stunned. She finally understood why I was afraid of the dark and why I had said the same words in the hospital. She had not even thought to get me help and had instead called me an ungrateful brat. Mrs. Walker asked her one final question, "You all called Kate a curse, but who was the one who suffered after following you for all those years?"Who did she ever curse?"My mom just kept crying, saying "I’m sorry" over and over. It was the only thing she could say. She had wronged me, and she had wronged Grandma even more. This belated apology was worthless. It meant nothing to me.After returning home, my mom fell seriously ill. She spent her days clutching my photo, consumed by sorrow. Things weren’t going well for Gwen either. After learning of my death, Orion confronted Gwen, asking, "Why did you push her into the basement?" "You all bullied me! She’s de

"She’ll only hate me." My mom held the photo tightly to her chest, and finally, the tears came. "I don’t hate you. I’ve never hated you. "I just didn’t know how to face you."I clutched my chest, wiping the tears from the corners of my eyes, and the pain began to ease. She said she did not hate me, but I knew that she did not love me either. She had Zac move all the lamps out of the house, leaving none behind. Then, with great care, she placed the photo into her bag, keeping it close to her. Mom, didn’t you think it was too late to do this? I did not need those lamps anymore. They could not shine into my heart, and I was still afraid.……When we got home, the first thing my mom did was clear out Gwen’s study and fill it with the lamps. "Dad, look at Mom. What’s wrong with her?"Why bring back a dead person’s stuff? That’s so unlucky." Gwen stood at the door, gripping my dad’s arm tightly."She’s gone. What’s the point of keeping these things?"It’s bad l

"Zac, I’m so scared." Gwen could not hold it in anymore and leaned into Zac’s arms. How could she not be scared? She was the one who pushed me into the basement, where I was tortured to death. My mom gave Gwen a long, hard look. She opened her mouth a few times, but nothing came out. It wasn’t until we left the police station that Gwen finally dared to take a few deep breaths. When we got home, my mom began searching through the house. "Where’s her small cross necklace?" After repeated questioning, Gwen nervously avoided eye contact and eventually admitted it had been thrown into the basement long ago.It seemed like my mom finally realized something. Her hurried steps betrayed the calm facade she had been trying to maintain. The basement was truly dark, and even the usual lights were broken. A cold wind swept through, and I could not help but shiver. The small cross necklace lay discarded in the corner. The cross pendant was broken in two, just a few steps away f

I had imagined countless times what would happen if they found out I was dead. Would they show even the slightest bit of emotion? But my mom calmly hung up the phone and continued with her tasks. It wasn’t until Zac came rushing in, panicked. "Mom, I got a call. They said Kate’s dead." "That’s a lie. It’s just another one of her tricks," my mom immediately responded. How awful must I have been for her to not even believe I was dead? "It’s true. She’s really dead." Zac grabbed her hand, trying to calm her down.My mom’s face turned pale, and her hands started trembling. I couldn’t tell if it was because she was angry or if she had actually been affected by the news.As they were getting ready to leave, they ran into Gwen at the door. Her face was even more panicked. "I need to go grab something from the basement."My mom grabbed her shaky hand. "Why do you need to go there?" Before Gwen could answer, they pulled her along out the door.A couple of days ago, sh

After that, I did not even know where my body was. It was too dark, and even as a spirit, I was too afraid to go there. If Grandma were still here, would she hold me in her arms like she did last time? Crying and telling me, "Grandma’s here, Grandma’s here." No, she could not see me like this. Once was enough. She could not see me like this a second time. Grandma wanted me to live in the light, but I’ve always lived in darkness. Even in death, I remained in the dark.I knew one thing for sure. There would never be anyone in this world who would choose me without hesitation.I had become the child who would never be loved.I clutched my chest, trying to stay calm."Mom, I hate you all."It’s not that you abandoned me. It's that I don’t want you anymore."Being your daughter has been the greatest misfortune of my life."……After the call was cut off, Zac kept complaining about the bad luck.Gwen, feeling guilty, tried to comfort my parents.
