Chapter 4

Autor: Dayless Reverie
Samuel's POV

Seeing no further interference, the men dragged me by force into the dim underground garage.

In the stairwell, one of the men had a wildly unhinged look in his eyes as the steel pipe in his hands came crashing down.

"How dare you run? Driving a Porsche while dodging debts, huh?"

I couldn't tell how much time had passed. The ceiling blurred before my eyes as dull snaps of bones fracturing sounded and excruciating pain surged through my body.

Once they finished venting, they yanked off my luxury watch and stole my wallet and phone.

It wasn't until one of them noticed the puddle of blood beneath me that they fled in a panic.

I struggled to lower my head, greeted only by blood pooled across the ground and my own mangled, deformed ribs.

As the world spun wildly around me, it felt like I was being pulled back five years in time.

My first meeting with Rosa was at the crosswalk by the campus gate, where a car ran a red light and nearly ran her down.

I had thrown myself over her to take the hit, leaving my back scraped raw and bloody.

Afterward, she promised that as long as she was around, she'd never let me get hurt again.

Using the last of my strength, I dialed Rosa's number.

I wanted to ask her that even if our beginning was a twist of fate, did that promise to always care for me still count?

Yet when the call connected, Xander's voice came through the line instead. "Samuel, Rosa's helping me take a bath right now. Is something up?"

Rosa's voice drifted from nearby. "What is it?"

Xander let out a soft chuckle. "Samuel says his whole body hurts. He's probably just upset seeing us married."

Rosa's voice went instantly cold. "Haven't you made enough of a scene? Do you really have to ruin such an important day?"

The call disconnected right after.

As I listened to the dial tone, my call for help choked back down my blood-filled throat.

A second before total silence claimed the world, I held on with my last breath to dial the police.

Then, my consciousness plunged into complete darkness.

When I woke up, the stark white hospital ceiling filled my vision.

The doctor sighed, his tone laced with sympathy. "Good, you're awake. You suffered severe blunt force trauma and broke three ribs. If you'd dialed 911 ten minutes later, you wouldn't have made it."

I numbly placed a hand over the thick bandages wrapped around my abdomen.

Two months ago, a drunk Rosa had wrapped her arms around me with tear-brimmed eyes.

She said that after we got married, she would definitely take me to climb snow-capped mountains, dive into oceans, and travel the world.

Now, my broken body could no longer withstand any strenuous activity.

Officers arrived soon after to take my statement.

"You were targeted by violent debt collectors and robbed. Those men were violent psychiatric patients specifically hired by an illegal debt ring.

"They have a prior record of severely injuring innocent bystanders and are currently in our custody. It's a good thing you reported it in time, or the consequences would've been unimaginable."

After the police left, an eerie silence settled over the ward.

I picked up my phone from the nightstand. The screen was completely clear.

For three whole days, none of my family members or friends had asked where I was. Even my fiancee hadn't bothered.

Placidly opening my contacts, I blocked every familiar number.

Lilith, Mom, Dad, Rosa, Adam, Olivia, Harley…

The moment I was done, a deep sense of relief washed over me.

A week later, I processed my discharge while dragging my wrecked body along. I had yet to fully recover.

Since I'd left my documents behind, I obtained a temporary ID card and boarded a flight bound for Cyrenth.

As the plane took off, I cast one last glance at the city built on lies.

I would no longer pine for the past. My new life would begin here.

Third-Person POV

Meanwhile, Rosa had rented out the entire venue to celebrate her two-thousandth-day anniversary with Xander.

She shared her feelings with the crowd. "I still remember how the car couldn't brake in front of the campus gate back then, and Xander threw himself forward without a second thought to save me.

"It's a shame I was so terrified that I forgot to ask for his number. I waited by the university's gate for half a month before I finally bumped into someone who looked just like him. Who would've thought that was Xander's brother, Samuel?"

Hearing this, Lilith grabbed Rosa's arm. "Are you saying Xander saved you at the gate of Jindale University? But his health was poor. He never attended university."

Rosa froze on the spot.

Before she could process it, Harley's face suddenly turned ghost-white beside them.

"Look… Doesn't the psychotic attacker who just got arrested on TV… look like the guy who led the crowd to drag Samuel away outside the apartment that day?"

Samuel's POVIn the days that followed, they stopped showing up downstairs. Yet their traces remained everywhere.Every few days, another letter would land in my mailbox—sometimes thick, sometimes thin, in varying handwriting.I didn't open a single one. Instead, I gathered them for a week before throwing them away all at once. The research team's group email occasionally received messages bearing my name from Lilith.I set up an automatic filter to route them straight to the bin.The only moment I felt a flicker of hesitation was when a package arrived from my hometown.Opening it, I found my childhood photo album inside. A note written by Dad was tucked into the first page. "These belong solely to you. We've lost too much, but at least we can return this."I flipped through a few pages. There was a photo of me riding on Dad's shoulders at three years old and another of Mom smiling broadly beside me when I won an elementary school award.Back then, Xander hadn't been diagnos

Samuel's POVRosa had clearly been waiting for a long time.Several empty coffee cups were scattered outside her car window. Her usually immaculate hair was a mess, and her eyes were bloodshot. The second she saw me step out, she practically scrambled out of the car. "Samuel."I pulled my gaze back and started walking toward the bus stop. She hastened to follow, staying exactly one step behind me.She didn't grab me or block my path. "I know you don't want to see me. But there are things I have to tell you in person."I didn't slow down.As she followed beside me, her voice dropped low. "You were the one who saved me that day. I had the wrong person all along. If only I'd asked for your name back then, none of this would have happened."I paused and cast a glance at her.Under the morning light, her face looked drained and exhausted. It was a far cry from the spirited woman who stood before me five years ago, promising to protect me.I spoke in a flat tone. "And?"Rosa froz

Samuel's POVAnother week went by.I thought they would gradually give up.Yet when I returned from the institute that evening, a figure was standing outside the apartment building. It was Mom.She looked noticeably thinner than the last time I saw her. Her eyes were swollen and red, and she was carrying a thermos in her hands. The moment she caught sight of me, she stumbled forward a step. "Samuel—"I stopped ten feet away, refusing to step any closer. "How did you find this place?"Mom wiped her tears, her voice deeply raspy. "Your mentor wouldn't tell us. Your dad had to ask around your old classmates to get this address."I made your favorite pumpkin soup. You're out here all alone, and your body suffered such severe injuries. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been biased, and I shouldn't have helped Xander hide things from you."When she took another step forward, I took a step back.Mom froze.I looked at her and replied calmly, "Mom, back when you faked a heart condition t

Samuel's POVAutumn in Cyrenth arrived earlier than expected.Bundled in my coat, I sat in a corner of the architecture institute, organizing blueprints.Outside the window, most of the sycamore leaves had turned yellow under the faint sunlight. It had been two weeks since I moved to Cyrenth. My mentor, Lauren Hunt, didn't ask why I suddenly changed my mind. She simply handed me the keys to her spare apartment."Get settled in first. No rush. Focus on resting up before getting back to work."She probably noticed I was in rough shape, so for the first few days, she assigned me only basic support tasks.Although losing my spleen left me weaker than before and my wound still throbbed with a dull ache, it was a massive improvement from the day I stepped off the plane. That day, a cab driver had to support me into the emergency room for a follow-up.Seeing my pale face and the cold sweat beading it, he obstinately refused to let me pay the fare.A total stranger in Cyrenth showed

"Are you a family member of the victim?""I'm his fiancee."The officer slid a copy of the police report across the counter toward her."The victim was dragged into an underground garage by a psychotic debt-collecting gang. He was assaulted and robbed. According to the investigation, the victim had no outstanding debts. The suspects involved have been apprehended."Harley's hands began to tremble.Adam stood frozen as well. His voice sounded weak and uncertain as he said, "Wait, that's not right. Didn't Xander tell us that day that Samuel took out a loan shark debt and got cornered?"He told us to just stay out of it so Samuel wouldn't ruin the wedding. So why is the news saying he didn't owe any money?"Just then, Lilith received a phone call. As she listened, her face turned instantly pale. With bloodshot eyes, she rushed over and delivered a sharp
