Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Dayless Reverie
Samuel's POV

I turned and walked away, ignoring the whispers echoing behind me.

When I tried to head home to pack my things, I found myself locked out.

The fingerprint scanner flashed red repeatedly. It failed to open even after my fingertip turned raw from trying.

Our neighbor, Lacey Olson, bumped into me on her way back from grocery shopping and offered a friendly smile. "Hey young man, how come you don't have that dog with you today?"

I froze for a moment. "Ms. Olson, I don't own a dog."

Lacey waved her hand dismissively. "That can't be right. I just saw you registering the dog's nose print on the lock yesterday. That pup was quite playful too, and your parents were right beside you, helping coax it."

I stood rooted to the spot, my mind going completely blank.

I was severely allergic to dog fur. Contact caused rashes, high fevers, and even anaphylactic shock.

The one who adored dogs had always been Xander.

Of course. How simple was that?

To let Xander's dog come and go as it pleased, they erased my fingerprint to register the dog's nose print.

The home I grew up in didn't even have spare space for a single fingerprint of mine.

I let out a self-deprecating laugh, turned around, and walked downstairs.

I didn't own much in that house anyway, but my essential documents were still stored at the new apartment I shared with Rosa.

I hailed a cab to our place and used the ride to book a flight to Cyrenth.

There, a major architectural project awaited me. It was an opportunity my former mentor had saved just for me.

Before, I had chosen to stay behind for the sake of Rosa and Xander.

Now, I finally had the chance to chase my own dreams.

The moment I stepped out of the cab, several fierce-looking men wielding steel pipes swarmed and surrounded me.

The burly leader grabbed me tightly by the collar, his face twisted in anger. "Brooks! You owe our boss five million dollars and think you can just run? You're coming with us!"

They possessed overwhelming strength, forcing me to struggle frantically.

"Help! I don't know you people! You've got the wrong guy! Let me go!"

A passerby caught sight of the commotion and immediately grabbed the leader's arm. "What are you doing? Abducting someone in broad daylight? I'm calling the police!"

The leader's eyes flickered with hesitation, and he was just about to loosen his grip.

Just then, my childhood friends, Adam and Harley, rounded the corner with a few others.

They glanced over at me being pinned down and scoffed in disdain.

"Looks like Rosa was right. He really was jealous enough to come make a scene at their new home. Good thing we showed up."

Adam sneered and immediately stepped forward, pulling the helpful passerby aside. "Sir, don't get involved, and don't call the cops."

He pulled out a group photo from his bag and handed it to the passerby. "We're his friends. He's vain as hell and ran up massive debts with friends. We're just settling it privately."

Harley chimed in from the side as well, "Yeah, he just loves dodging debts. Personal drama isn't worth getting mixed up in. Just go on ahead."

The passerby looked down at the group photo, shook his head, and walked away.

In absolute despair, I stretched my hand out toward the group. "I never took out loans! Help me!"

Adam's face filled with contempt as he spat coldly onto the ground. "No wonder you could afford a luxury car. Turns out you took out loan shark debts just to flex. Pay for your own mess."

Harley hesitated briefly before turning his head away too. "Tonight is Xander's wedding night. I won't let you ruin it."

With that, they got into their car, stepped on the gas, and sped off.

Samuel's POVIn the days that followed, they stopped showing up downstairs. Yet their traces remained everywhere.Every few days, another letter would land in my mailbox—sometimes thick, sometimes thin, in varying handwriting.I didn't open a single one. Instead, I gathered them for a week before throwing them away all at once. The research team's group email occasionally received messages bearing my name from Lilith.I set up an automatic filter to route them straight to the bin.The only moment I felt a flicker of hesitation was when a package arrived from my hometown.Opening it, I found my childhood photo album inside. A note written by Dad was tucked into the first page. "These belong solely to you. We've lost too much, but at least we can return this."I flipped through a few pages. There was a photo of me riding on Dad's shoulders at three years old and another of Mom smiling broadly beside me when I won an elementary school award.Back then, Xander hadn't been diagnos

Samuel's POVRosa had clearly been waiting for a long time.Several empty coffee cups were scattered outside her car window. Her usually immaculate hair was a mess, and her eyes were bloodshot. The second she saw me step out, she practically scrambled out of the car. "Samuel."I pulled my gaze back and started walking toward the bus stop. She hastened to follow, staying exactly one step behind me.She didn't grab me or block my path. "I know you don't want to see me. But there are things I have to tell you in person."I didn't slow down.As she followed beside me, her voice dropped low. "You were the one who saved me that day. I had the wrong person all along. If only I'd asked for your name back then, none of this would have happened."I paused and cast a glance at her.Under the morning light, her face looked drained and exhausted. It was a far cry from the spirited woman who stood before me five years ago, promising to protect me.I spoke in a flat tone. "And?"Rosa froz

Samuel's POVAnother week went by.I thought they would gradually give up.Yet when I returned from the institute that evening, a figure was standing outside the apartment building. It was Mom.She looked noticeably thinner than the last time I saw her. Her eyes were swollen and red, and she was carrying a thermos in her hands. The moment she caught sight of me, she stumbled forward a step. "Samuel—"I stopped ten feet away, refusing to step any closer. "How did you find this place?"Mom wiped her tears, her voice deeply raspy. "Your mentor wouldn't tell us. Your dad had to ask around your old classmates to get this address."I made your favorite pumpkin soup. You're out here all alone, and your body suffered such severe injuries. I'm sorry. I shouldn't have been biased, and I shouldn't have helped Xander hide things from you."When she took another step forward, I took a step back.Mom froze.I looked at her and replied calmly, "Mom, back when you faked a heart condition t

Samuel's POVAutumn in Cyrenth arrived earlier than expected.Bundled in my coat, I sat in a corner of the architecture institute, organizing blueprints.Outside the window, most of the sycamore leaves had turned yellow under the faint sunlight. It had been two weeks since I moved to Cyrenth. My mentor, Lauren Hunt, didn't ask why I suddenly changed my mind. She simply handed me the keys to her spare apartment."Get settled in first. No rush. Focus on resting up before getting back to work."She probably noticed I was in rough shape, so for the first few days, she assigned me only basic support tasks.Although losing my spleen left me weaker than before and my wound still throbbed with a dull ache, it was a massive improvement from the day I stepped off the plane. That day, a cab driver had to support me into the emergency room for a follow-up.Seeing my pale face and the cold sweat beading it, he obstinately refused to let me pay the fare.A total stranger in Cyrenth showed

Third-Person POVRosa's hands trembled as she held the lease termination agreement. She dialed Samuel's company. The receptionist answered politely, "Mr. Brooks finalized his resignation a week ago.""Where did he go?""We're not at liberty to disclose that."The line went dead.Rosa sped straight to the police station. The officer on duty pulled up the police report from that day and glanced up at her. "Are you a family member of the victim?""I'm his fiancee."The officer slid a copy of the police report across the counter toward her."The victim was dragged into an underground garage by a psychotic debt-collecting gang. He was assaulted and robbed. By the time he reached the hospital, his spleen had ruptured, and he was already in hemorrhagic shock."Rosa's eyes scanned the document line by line, suddenly freezing on a specific passage."Medical examination confirms the victim suffered three broken ribs and internal bleeding of the spleen. A critical condition notice wa

Third-Person POVThe news report continued playing."City police have broken up an illegal money-lending ring involved in violent debt collection. The ring specifically hired psychiatric patients to execute violent collections and illegally seize property."The group has committed multiple offenses and severely beaten an innocent bystander on the day of the Thanksgiving holiday. According to the investigation, the victim had no outstanding debts. The suspects involved have been apprehended."Harley's hands began to tremble.Adam stood frozen as well. His voice sounded weak and uncertain as he said, "Wait, that's not right. Didn't Xander tell us that day that Samuel took out a loan shark debt and got cornered?"He told us to just stay out of it so Samuel wouldn't ruin the wedding. So why is the news saying he didn't owe any money?"Just then, Lilith received a phone call. As she listened, her face turned instantly pale. With bloodshot eyes, she rushed over and delivered a sharp
