Chapter 3

Author: Bright Lights
He even cherished the scarf Ivy gave him like a precious treasure, holding it close to his chest.

It was almost funny, really. I had once given Magnus a hand-knitted scarf, too. Back then, Magnus just took one look at it before throwing it straight onto the ground.

"Instead of wasting your time on these meaningless things, you'd be better off thinking about how to supply me with more blood!"

I originally thought he just disliked human items. Now, I realize he simply disliked the person giving them to him.

Reflecting on everything from the past, I made up my mind and blocked Magnus' number.

…

Magnus frowned as every message he sent bounced back with a red error notification.

He wrapped his arm around Ivy. "I really don't know what kind of fit Laura is throwing. She actually blocked me!"

Ivy lay exhausted in Magnus' arms, breathing heavily. "Magnus, maybe you should go soothe her."

Magnus clicked his tongue in annoyance. "It seems I've been way too good to her lately! It's made her forget her place."

Ivy's voice was soft, acting coy. "But what are you going to do without blood? If you don't have her consent, you can't just take her blood directly, or the school will punish you."

Hearing that, Magnus nonchalantly twirled a lock of Ivy's hair around his finger.

"It doesn't matter. I've already fed on her blood this week. Laura will come crawling back to me soon enough, just like every time before."

Magnus was full of confidence. In the past, whenever he gave me the cold shoulder, I would grovel for his forgiveness, and he assumed this time would be no different.

…

Since I didn't go looking for Magnus, he naturally wouldn't come looking for me either.

I never had friends at Monster Academy. In fact, you could say I was the whole school's public enemy.

Before, when Magnus was around, my classmates had always tolerated me out of deference to him. Now that I was wandering campus alone, it didn't take long for the vultures to circle.

Emily the werewolf was the person at Monster Academy who hated me the most. Seeing me by myself, she stepped up to block my path.

"What's wrong? You're not trailing behind Magnus these past few days? Could it be that Magnus hates a pathetic loser like you now, too?"

I kept my head down and stayed silent, not wanting to get into an argument with her. Now that I was on my own, starting a conflict wasn't a smart move.

Emily, however, had no intention of letting me off the hook.

"Makes sense, though. Someone as repulsive as you is destined to end up alone and miserable!"

Her sarcastic words stabbed straight into my heart like a blade.

"Laura, I seriously don't get how someone as obnoxious as you can still have the nerve to stay at this school. If I were you, I would have left Monster Academy ages ago instead of clinging to Magnus like a leech!"

I used to think they simply couldn't stand the fact that a human like me was attending Monster Academy, which was why I had been enduring it all in silence.

So why were they so friendly toward Ivy?

Why was Magnus like this, and why were my classmates like this too?

When I was the only human at the academy, I could still keep deceiving myself, blaming my isolation on my race. But now I desperately needed an answer.

"Why don't you guys like me? Is it just because I'm human? But Ivy is human too, so why are you all so nice to her?"

Hearing my words, Emily looked at me in utter disbelief. "You think we hate you because you're human? Oh my God, we're not racists!"

Wait, what?

"We hate you because you look down on us!"

Her sudden words left my head spinning. "What are you talking about? I've never looked down on any of you! You're the ones who have always hated me!"

Seeing how I was supposedly twisting the truth, Emily immediately whipped out her phone to show her "evidence".

"Stop denying it! We all know about the bad things you said behind our backs!"

Ivy walked over to my side and raised her hand, smacking me twice across my face.Though it wasn't particularly hard, it was deeply humiliating."First, you will be Magnus' blood bag forever, until you die."Second, if the police come looking, you tell them you brought us out here to skip class and hang out."Third, I want you to admit that those rumors about you insulting our classmates were all true.""Can you do that?"I sneered inwardly. They really were ruthless. Not only did they want me to become Magnus' blood bag forever, but they also wanted to ensure I got isolated by the entire school all over again. The stinging pain on my arm faded, and Magnus licked the blood off the corners of his mouth.Satisfied, he let out a burp. Then, he even "thoughtfully" bandaged my wound."Laura, seeing you hurt really breaks my heart. You need to be far more careful next time."What a hypocrite! The moment he finished wrapping the bandage, the front door was kicked wide open. Poli

Magnus was so anxious he was practically tearing his hair out."Does it even matter?""If you don't tell me, I'm leaving."Seeing me turn, Magnus panicked. "Fine! Fine, I'll tell you! I don't love you, alright? I just want your blood! Can you let me feed on your blood now?"Hearing the truth, I didn't feel as heartbroken as I had imagined. Instead, a wave of relief and clarity washed over me.I pulled my lips into a smile and flatly refused. "Of course not, Magnus."Hearing my rejection, the smile on Magnus' face froze. "How can you go back on your word, Laura?!"I pursed my lips. "My deal to give you blood was contingent on you helping me join the Student Council. But I've suddenly decided I don't need a handout from you anymore. I think I can get in on my own merit, which means our deal is null and void, isn't it, Magnus?"I turned to leave when suddenly, a strange, sweet fragrance filled the air. The next second, my consciousness completely slipped away.Right before I blac

What do you say, Ivy?"Ivy scoffed, unable to find a single word to fire back. She wanted to become Magnus' girlfriend, but she wasn't willing to offer up her own blood. Besides, even if Magnus and I hadn't broken up, as long as I wasn't willing, he couldn't force me.Ivy knew this full well. "So I guess I ought to be thanking you for drinking my blood, huh?""You don't have to thank me! Just agree to get back together and give me a bit of blood. That'll be enough!"Magnus clearly missed the sarcasm in my voice. As he stared intently at my neck with a gaze full of greed, I knew he was reaching his absolute limit."Except I don't love you. So I'm not willing to give you my blood, Magnus."The hopeful spark in Magnus' eyes dimmed with every word I spoke. He clutched his head in agony."No, Laura... no, that's not true! You love me, right?"He closed in, his voice dropping into a desperate, hypnotizing whisper. "Laura, you love me... you've always wanted to give me your blood..."His fangs hovered inches from my pulse, his warm breath making my skin crawl. In the past, every single time he drank my blood, he was just like this—whispering sweet talk and using love as an excuse to make me surrender myself. To be honest, I was scared every single time. "In that case, I could just say you secretly drink toilet water!""Don't talk nonsense!"I spread my hands helplessly. "I'm your ex-girlfriend. Why would I need to lie?"Magnus stammered for a long time, but seeing that he couldn't win the argument, he quickly scurried away with Ivy in his arms. "I hope you don't regret this, Laura," he spat a final warning before running off.I had already regretted it long ago, regretting getting mixed up with a scumbag like Magnus and not finding out the truth sooner! After Magnus left, I thanked the classmates who had bravely spoken up for me and clarified those rumors once again.Emily held my hand. "We've seen Magnus' true colors now. It was our fault too for not coming to you directly to get the truth, and just pinning the blame on you right away."I shook my head, exhausted. "I don't blame you guys. Magnus was the one stirring up trouble behind the scenes, and none of you could have imagined he would smear his own girlfriend like that.
