Chapter 3

Author: Smell Frost
I had no interest in arguing with Tammy any further.

Unfortunately, she only got worse.

One day in the dining hall, she saw me pouring myself a glass of lemonade, the same thing she'd gotten, and actually stopped to roll her eyes. "God, some people are like flies. So freaking annoying. I get lemonade, and of course, she has to get lemonade too..."

My hand paused over the pitcher.

I looked at her curiously. "Are you talking about yourself?"

Tammy sneered. "I'm talking about whoever keeps copying me. Seriously, when are you going to stop? Now you even have to copy what I drink?"

I laughed and glanced over my shoulder.

It was the middle of summer, and the dining hall offered free ice-cold lemonade with lunch. Naturally, it was one of the most popular drinks on campus.

Behind me, a long line of students was waiting to get some.

I raised my voice, putting on an exaggerated look of realization. "Oh, I get it now! I guess everyone here is copying Tammy Reed. Tammy got herself some lemonade, and suddenly all these people decided to get lemonade too. Apparently that makes all of you copycats!"

Every head in the line turned our way.

A few people immediately frowned. "Who's Tammy Reed? What are you talking about?"

Tammy immediately panicked. "I… I wasn't talking about you guys! I was only talking about her!"

I tilted my head. "So, when I get lemonade, I'm copying you, but when everyone else gets it, they're not? How does that work?"

"You!" Tammy jabbed a finger at me, too furious to get another word out. "Fine! I don't even want it anymore!"

She shot me a disgusted glare, then grabbed her cup and poured the lemonade straight back into the dispenser.

"What is wrong with you?" someone in line snapped. "You just poured your drink back in there! Other people are supposed to drink that!"

Tammy's face went scarlet. "I didn't drink from it!"

"How are we supposed to know that?"

"That's disgusting..."

"Someone, get a dining hall employee. What if she did drink from it? Nobody wants her germs!"

The line erupted into chatter as more and more people began complaining.

"You…" Tammy's eyes welled up. The moment she saw a dining hall employee heading our way, she stomped her foot and bolted.

After that little incident, Tammy ended up all over the campus gossip page.

For the next few days, people kept coming up to her and asking if she was the girl from the viral post.

She was so humiliated that I heard her crying in our dorm more than once.

On the bright side, she finally left me alone for a while.

Two weeks later, in our entrepreneurship class, the professor had each group present their final project.

My three teammates and I had pulled more than a few late nights putting ours together, and we'd finished both our presentation and business proposal well ahead of time.

So, when it was our turn, we walked to the front of the room feeling pretty confident.

We presented our product, which was designed for seniors, then walked the class through our business model and marketing strategy.

When we finished, the professor applauded enthusiastically. "Excellent work. The concept is innovative, but it's also practical and commercially viable. I can tell you put a lot of thought into this. Everyone else should take notes."

My teammates and I exchanged excited smiles.

The group with the highest score in the class would qualify for the university-wide startup competition.

At this rate, we actually had a shot. All those late nights might finally pay off.

The professor looked around the room again. "Would anyone like to critique their presentation? Tell us what they did well and where they could improve."

The room fell silent.

Then one hand shot up. Tammy's.

The professor looked pleased to see someone volunteering and called on her.

But instead of offering feedback, Tammy stood up with an angry expression and pointed straight at us. "Sir, they stole our entire project!"

There was a security camera overlooking the dumpsters outside our residence hall.We spent nearly an hour going through the footage before we finally found what we were looking for. There was Tammy, creeping toward the dumpsters with something clutched in her hands. The officer zoomed in and saw my Hermès bag. There was no mistaking it.And that wasn't all.As we kept going through the footage, the truth became painfully obvious. For days, Tammy had been waiting until I was out of the dorm, secretly damaging my clothes and accessories, then sneaking downstairs to throw them away. She'd thought no one would ever know. What she hadn't realized was that the security camera had captured everything. There was no explaining her way out of this one.Tammy stared at the footage, every last trace of color draining from her face."Oh my God, it really was her!""That's insane. Imagine getting stuck with a roommate like this."The students gathered around immediately erupted into whis

I stared at her in disbelief.Tammy kept going, "If you don't believe me, check her closet. That Hermès bag in there is mine! I found out she'd stolen from me, and I got so angry that I ruined her dress."I actually laughed. "Tammy, your bag is a counterfeit you bought off some online marketplace. I already own the real thing. Why would I steal your fake?"Tammy didn't answer.Instead, she rushed straight to my closet, yanked the door open, and reached all the way into the back. Then she pulled out a bag and held it up triumphantly. "See? I have pictures of my bag from before. You can compare them. This is mine!"She sounded so completely certain that my irritation gave way to suspicion.I frowned, snatched the bag from her, and examined it carefully. Then I froze. She was right. This wasn't my Hermès. It was Tammy's counterfeit. The students crowded around the doorway looked stunned."No way. Maren looks rich. Why would she steal someone's bag?""Are you serious? Just beca

Tammy wasn't actually the worst offender in the whole cyberbullying mess. The person who'd doxxed me was the biggest problem, followed by the gossip account that had taken her posts and blasted the story out to a massive audience.Tammy had started the whole thing, sure, but her own posts hadn't reached nearly as many people as theirs had. She'd also been careful to keep most of her accusations vague enough to hide behind the excuse that she was only sharing her "personal experience".The clearest lines she'd crossed were posting a recognizable photo of me without my consent and making false claims that damaged my reputation. In the end, she deleted every post she'd made about me, uploaded a handwritten public apology, and faced disciplinary action from the university as well as the legal consequences of the complaint. But eventually, she returned to campus.By then, the scandal had spread through the entire university.Someone even dug up the old dining hall incident and repos

Unknown numbers kept calling one after another, making it nearly impossible for me to get a call through to the police.I opened WhatsApp instead. Dozens of people had texted me, asking what was going on.More than ten messages were from my mom.The last one read, "Maren, don't worry about anything right now. Just come home. I'm already outside the main entrance waiting for you."The moment I read those words, the hurt I'd been holding back finally broke through. I pressed my lips together, but it was no use. Tears spilled down my cheeks.I gave myself a moment to pull it together, wiped my face, and started packing a few things. Then I grabbed my bag and hurried toward the main entrance.I passed quite a few students on my way out.More than a few recognized me, and the looks they gave me were anything but friendly."Hey, isn't that her?""I think so. That's the copycat girl from online..."I tightened my grip on my phone, lowered my head, and quickened my pace.Mom was wai

I figured the whole bag fiasco would finally get Tammy to back off, so I stopped keeping such a close eye on her social media. Then Lucas mailed me a copy of his new photobook.Naturally, he had to send me a smug text about it too. "Try not to be too overwhelmed by your cousin's devastatingly good looks."I barely made it through a few pages before I got too sleepy to keep reading.Still, knowing Tammy, I wasn't about to leave the book lying around where she could pull something weird with it. Before climbing into bed, I made a point of putting it safely inside my drawer.I thought that would be the end of it.The next morning, I was jolted awake by my phone ringing nonstop.Still half asleep, I answered without even checking the number.A strange man's voice immediately exploded through the speaker. "Finally picked up, you disgusting woman! What the hell is wrong with you? You really think you can…"I snapped awake and hung up.Before I could even process what had happened,

Lucas asked, "Want me to post something and clear this up for you?"I immediately told him no.This whole thing was petty college drama. There was no reason to drag Lucas and his followers into it.Besides, Tammy had already posted my picture. If Lucas stepped in personally, the whole thing would explode overnight. Then everyone on the Internet would know I was Lucas' cousin. No, thanks.Instead, I opened my messages and contacted Tammy directly. "That @LucasStarryEyes account is yours, right? You do realize you posted my photo without permission and you're spreading lies about me online, don't you? This could get you into serious legal trouble."Tammy replied, "Oh, please. What lies? Everything I said was true."I typed, "Alright. Then I'll report it to the police, and you can explain your side to them."This time, Tammy didn't reply.A little while later, I refreshed Tammy's profile. The post was gone. She'd quietly deleted the entire thing without another word.Apparentl
