Chapter 3

Author: Reneemoon
They escorted me home and locked me inside.

The first thing I did was find my passport and medical license and shove them into a bag.

An international organization had emailed me a month ago, asking if I'd be willing to work in Africa as a field doctor.

At the time, I was so caught up in the excitement of his proposal that I'd buried the email in my drafts without a second thought.

There was no reason to ignore it anymore.

When I opened the email and accepted the offer, a sharp pain shot through my chest.

I sucked in a breath, set down my phone, and pulled open my collar. The skin around my old bullet wound was red and swollen, with blood and pus leaking from it.

Despite being a doctor, I had ignored every warning sign of infection and forced myself out of the hospital for the wedding.

Now that I was thinking clearly, I could see how badly infected the wound was.

Even my body seemed to be telling me to leave.

I reached for my medical kit and went looking for rubbing alcohol.

An Instagram notification lit up my phone.

Julia had tagged me in a group photo from the wedding.

"Sofia, thank you for letting me live my dream, even if only for a moment."

In the photo, Leonardo held Julia in his arms.

She beamed up at him as the long train of my wedding dress trailed across the floor.

That was my wedding dress.

The pain in my chest sharpened.

I pressed a hand over the wound and forced a smile.

Then I liked the post.

I put down the phone and forced myself up to look for antibiotics.

I searched every cabinet, but there was not a single pill in the room.

I headed for the basement storage room.

But Marco Bellini, one of Leonardo's men, blocked my way.

"I'm sorry, Sofia. The Don ordered us not to let you leave."

I looked at him coldly.

"He has no right to lock me up. My wound is badly infected, and I need medicine from the storage room."

I shoved past him and went straight to the elevator's facial scanner.

It rejected me every time.

I stood there, stunned.

Marco approached, displeasure flickering in his eyes.

"Sofia, the Don just ordered someone to remove your profile from the facial-recognition system. Only the Donna has unrestricted access to the Rizzo estate. You haven't married the Don yet, so you don't have that privilege. Please go back to your room."

I bit my lip and took a deep breath.

"Can't you see? I need that medicine now! I could die without it."

Marco hesitated, then took out his phone and called Leonardo.

It rang for a long time before Leonardo answered. Marco explained that my wound was infected and that I urgently needed medicine.

I had thought Leonardo would at least listen to reason with my life on the line.

But after hearing Marco's report, he sneered, "A minute ago, she was willing to do anything to get out. Now she actually asks for help? Julia posted that photo to cheer her up, and Sofia gave it a sarcastic like just to upset her. Julia's been crying for over an hour! Give her the medicine when she's ready to admit she was wrong."

He hung up.

He stared at me like he'd never truly seen me before. For the first time, the certainty that he could control me—that he could keep me simply because he wanted me—fell apart. He finally understood. I didn't belong to him.A long silence passed.Leonardo laughed bitterly. "All right. You're free."He bent down, picked up the marriage-license application, and ripped it to pieces in front of me."I'd rather lose you than keep you trapped beside me. At least this way, you can live the life you want."He walked toward the door slowly, each step heavier than the last.At the door, he stopped."Can I ask you for one last thing? Don't forget me."I said nothing. My silence was answer enough.A bitter smile crossed his face. Whatever hope he'd still been holding on to finally died. Then he opened the door and walked out into the night. He never looked back.By the next day, his men were gone. It was as if they'd never been there.I stayed. Jack and I kept working, and the camp seemed to take in

I raised my head and really looked at Jack for the first time.He stood under the blazing sun, his white coat streaked with blood and dust. Yet his eyes were bright and clear. After a long silence, I answered, "All right."When I reached Leonardo's camp, the guard outside stared at me in shock."The Don has been waiting for you forever."He hurried to open the door for me.I went in and found Leonardo drinking alone on the bed.He stared at me for two seconds, then jerked upright."Sofia... Did you change your mind?"Without answering, I pulled out a pen, several sheets of paper, and a marriage-license application and set them on the table."I did. You said you wanted to marry me. Do you still mean it?"The bottle fell from his hand and hit the carpet, liquor spreading across it.He rushed to the table and grabbed the pen. His hands were shaking so badly he couldn't even get the cap off."Yes! Of course I do!"He signed his name and looked up at me, his face lighting up."I will marry

His hands slowly fell from my shoulders. The corridor went quiet except for the clink of medical instruments and insects humming outside.Leonardo stood there, his lips moving, but no words came out.I turned and walked back toward the tent. This time, he did not follow me....I thought that would finally make him leave. I was wrong. He stopped cornering me and begging me to take him back. Instead, he found quieter ways to stay in my life and make sure I never forgot he was there. He rented an abandoned shed next to the camp and moved in with several of his men.Every day, he sent something different: first a crate of penicillin, then a brand-new portable ventilator, then baskets of fresh fruit and vegetables we could never get locally.Whenever Jack saw the supplies or the red roses Leonardo had shipped in from Chicago, he unpacked the boxes and raised his eyebrows at me."Sofia, if you don't give that lovesick fool something, he might follow you around for the rest of your life."I

Back at the camp, Jack Carter draped a white coat over my shoulders. He glanced between Leonardo and me, then lowered his voice. "The medical facilities here are limited. Are you sure you want to save her? Besides..." He paused. "You two clearly have history."Once, I might have thought twice. But after three months here, I'd watched children, mothers, and elderly people die in front of me. Death didn't care about grudges."Use my name. Pull whatever strings you have to. Just save her."Jack glanced at me, nodded, and disappeared into the emergency room. The heavy night air smelled of disinfectant.Leonardo leaned against the wall, his hands tangled in his hair. His voice came out muffled. "I never thought... it would come to this. Sofia, I'm so sorry."I scoffed, "Sorry doesn't fix any of this. You caused it."I had nothing else to say to him, so I turned toward the emergency room. The surgery took hours. The bullet was out, but whether Julia survived was up to her now.I stood beside

I laughed bitterly, keeping the gun trained on him. With my free hand, I pointed toward the black car nearby. "Yeah. Even after I ran all the way to Africa, your sister still managed to find me. She sent that man to kill me. And you still have the nerve to show your face here?"Leonardo's face drained of color. Then shock gave way to fury. He turned and motioned to his men.Moments later, they dragged Julia over.Strangely, she didn't struggle. She looked almost as if she'd been expecting this.I stared at her."Why?"She looked at me and smiled. Then she turned to Leonardo and burst out laughing, her shoulders shaking. "Why?" She wiped the tears from her eyes. "Because I still didn't get what I was promised."She looked back at me, her voice strangely calm. "Men make promises whenever they feel like it. And we're stupid enough to believe them. You and I aren't so different, Sofia. Except you're free now. You can leave whenever you want. But if I let go of that promise, I'll have nothi

  • My Wedding Belonged to Another Woman   Chapter 13

After treating the last patients of the day, I carried the instruments back to my tent.It was pitch-black outside. As I passed some tall grass, something metallic flashed in the corner of my eye.A gun barrel.I had survived too many shootouts not to recognize one instantly. My body moved before I could think. I twisted aside and dropped into a crouch.Bang! The bullet grazed my ear and struck a metal barrel behind me with a sharp clang. My gaze sharpened. My hand went straight inside my coat and closed around the combat knife I always carried.I drew it and threw it toward the grass. The blade cut through the air.Someone grunted.I rushed over and dragged a man from the grass.Camouflage paint covered his face, but his pale skin made it obvious he wasn't local.I knew immediately who had sent him.The Rizzo family.Leonardo wouldn't hide in the grass and try to assassinate me.Which left Julia.I slammed his head into the ground, drove a knee into his back, and pressed my knife agai
