Chapter 4

Author: Echoes of Summer
After Claire left, someone wheeled me back into the main ER.

Mom brought a new triage form to the nurses' station and changed my assessment. She crossed out "Urgent" herself.

"Low blood pressure, cold sweats. He's probably still shaken up from the wedding. Put him under routine observation. He doesn't need a trauma bed."

Paige Newton, a young nurse, hesitated. "But there's blood under his clothes."

Mom shook her head. "There was broken glass everywhere. Just keep an eye on him."

Meanwhile, Lila submitted her incident report to the hospital. It stated that every piece of the chandelier's outer frame was accounted for and no bloodstained metal fragments were found at the scene.

She handed Sophia her phone. "A support rod couldn't have stabbed him. He's in pain and probably confused about what happened."

Sophia nodded, sat down at a computer, and added a note to my chart.

[No obvious external injuries observed. No severe internal injury suspected at this time.]

Once she saved the notes, the rest of my tests were canceled.

Paige came over. When she saw my hands moving, she stopped.

"He's signing. Should we get an interpreter?"

I nodded hard, but Mom stepped in. "I'm his mother. I understand him."

"What is he saying?" the nurse asked.

I told Mom again, in signs she knew, that a piece of metal was lodged in my back.

She glanced at my hands. "He wants to know if Evan's tests are done."

I stared at her, then caught her sleeve.

[No. That's not what I said.]

I tried again.

[Metal in my lower back. I'm dying.]

Before I could finish, she pulled her sleeve free.

"I'm busy, Kyle. Once Evan's stable, I'll come sit with you."

She went back to the nurses' station and started coordinating care for the other patients.

Lila was finishing her incident report. Sophia was studying Evan's test results.

Neither of them looked at my hands again.

Paige accepted Mom's explanation. She was my mother and the head nurse, after all.

She took off my red wristband and replaced it with a green one. Red meant I needed immediate care. Green meant I could wait.

An orderly brought over a wheelchair. He needed my stretcher for another patient.

I shook my head and held tight to the rail. Claire warned them not to move me again, but he couldn't understand what I was trying to tell him.

"We're just getting you into a wheelchair. Hang on. This'll only take a second."

He put an arm around my shoulders and helped me up.

The moment my back lifted off the mattress, the metal inside me shifted. I could almost hear it tearing through flesh.

Blinding pain shot through me. Then a strange, weightless feeling took over, and the faces around me blurred.

The orderly lowered me into the wheelchair and pushed me to the waiting area outside the CT room.

I used the last of my strength to sign for help.

He followed my gaze. "Looking for your family?"

He pointed to the CT room. "They're all in there with that young man."

Then he took the empty stretcher away.

Blood kept running down my back beneath the uniform, hidden by the dark fabric.

I turned the wheelchair toward the CT room, trying to ram the door. The wheels barely moved before my hands slipped off the rims.

My wedding ring slid from my finger and hit the floor. Sophia had put it on my hand herself that morning.

It rolled across the polished floor and struck the CT room door.

The door opened, and Sophia stepped out with a hand on Evan's arm. His nose had stopped bleeding, and the color was back in his face.

She spotted the ring and bent to pick it up.

"Kyle, now you're throwing your wedding ring away? Evan's tests are done. Stop making a scene."

I raised my hand one last time.

I wanted to tell her she was wrong, to get her to look at my back. But I no longer trusted any of them to help me.

I turned to Paige standing nearby and tried to sign.

[Don't trust them. Get someone else to help me.]

I only got halfway through before my hand fell into my lap.

Sophia finally looked at me, still holding my wedding ring.

By then, I sat motionless in the wheelchair.

I wasn't breathing anymore.

Reporters crowded outside the building on the day of the public hearing.Claire testified first. I was still conscious when I arrived at the hospital, she said. She tried to examine me three times, and my family stopped her each time. Before she finished, she held up a photo of the blood-soaked gauze."He was bleeding onto the floor, but because the blood didn't show through his dark uniform, they insisted he wasn't hurt."Paige took the stand next. She admitted she relied too heavily on my mother's judgment instead of reassessing me herself."Kyle kept looking at me. He knew I might be the last person who would stop and listen. But in the end, I walked away."Victor submitted the emergency call records. After the chandelier fell, he offered to call a second ambulance right away.Mom worried about what the guests would say and insisted I stay to finish the ceremony."If we'd sent him straight to the hospital, he would've gotten there 40 minutes earlier."Each witness described

During a later round of individual interviews, Mom was the first to change her story.Until then, she had insisted she misread my signs. This time, she sat in front of the camera for a long time before speaking."I understood him."The investigator looked up. Tears dripped onto her hands."Kyle told me there was a piece of metal inside him. He said he was dying. I didn't think that was possible."Lila said no pieces were missing from the chandelier. Sophia said he didn't have any visible injuries."I thought he'd distract everyone from treating Evan if he kept signing. So I told them he was saying something else."She never misunderstood me. She made sure no one else understood me, either.By the time she finished, she looked ten years older. In Sophia's own interview, she said, "The first time, I understood 'chandelier,' 'Evan,' and 'lower back.' But I already assumed he was blaming Evan."The second time, he clearly told me he needed help and was dying. I still thought he w

A month later, the preliminary findings were circulated to everyone involved.Sophia relied on the accident report and her own assumptions instead of examining me. She canceled my tests and gave Evan my slot for a scan. She also understood my pleas for help but dismissed them as attempts to pressure her and compete for attention.Sophia remained suspended while authorities investigated her role in my death. When Sophia received the findings, she offered no defense. The hospital director sighed. "You were the youngest doctor we'd ever put in charge of the ER. If this hadn't happened…""But it did," Sophia interrupted. "I refused to examine my own husband. I can't ask another patient to trust me."Mom received her findings, too. She used her position as head nurse to obstruct my care, lowered my triage priority without authorization, and stopped the staff from getting an interpreter. While her nursing license was under review, she returned to the hospital and stood outside the n

It was dark by the time Sophia returned to the home we were supposed to share. The bedroom was still set up for our wedding night. Fresh linens covered the bed, and framed photos on the nightstand traced our relationship from when we first met to the wedding. But half my side of the closet was empty. She never noticed. For the past month, she spent most of her time at the hospital. Even on her days off, Evan called whenever he needed something. While I packed, she missed the empty hangers.Under the desk, she found a cardboard box with her name on it.Inside was a pair of gloves with sensors sewn into the lining. Connected to a phone, they could turn basic signs into spoken words. They were my wedding gift to her.A card lay beside them.[You always worry you'll forget how to sign. If you do, these will help you understand me.]Sophia put on the gloves and signed my name with shaking hands. Her phone spoke in a flat, electronic voice."Kyle."She signed again."I'm sorr

After the memorial, Gemma gave Mom, Lila, and Sophia a hard drive. It held videos I had recorded over the three years since I lost my voice. Back then, I believed they would understand if I could just find a way to explain myself clearly. In the first video, I was fresh out of the hospital, with the wound on my throat still healing. I stood outside the bedroom I gave up for Evan, struggling with signs I was only beginning to learn.[I don't mind letting him have the room, but my doctor said I need somewhere quiet to recover. Downstairs, I'm right next to the kitchen. Between the noise and the pain, I can't sleep.]That same day, Mom told our relatives the injury changed me. According to her, I was so difficult now that I wouldn't even give my brother a bedroom. The second video was about Grandpa's watch.I kept explaining that he had given it to me when I enlisted. I just wanted it back.Mom called it an old watch and said it wasn't worth fighting with my brother over.In the

Gemma arrived at the Bradford house carrying a document envelope.Mom hurried over. "I'm Kyle's mother. His family should be making the funeral arrangements."Gemma took a notarized authorization form from the envelope without arguing. My signature was at the bottom. It named her as the person responsible for my remains, my memorial service, and my belongings after my death. My immediate family could attend, but they couldn't change the arrangements without permission. They couldn't speak for me about decisions I made during my life, and they couldn't forgive anyone on my behalf.I underlined that last sentence.Mom went pale as she read it. "When did he sign this?""Six months ago," Gemma said. "Mr. Kyle told me his family kept putting words in his mouth. He was worried that even after he died, you still wouldn't let him have his say."Sophia took the document from her.Gemma was listed as my emergency contact. Not Sophia, Mom, or Lila. The paper shook in Sophia's hands. "We
