Chapter 2

مؤلف: yb
No sooner had the words left my mouth than a loud bang echoed through the church.

Riccardo had hurled the microphone in his hand onto the marble floor. "Elena, don't push it!"

His eyes were red as he growled at me, his voice trembling ever so slightly.

I gave a self-deprecating smile. At this point, all I felt was overwhelming exhaustion.

"What's wrong? Didn't you specially prepare this little show for Sofia? I'm just going along with it, so why am I yelled at for it?"

Riccardo was rendered speechless. He kept his eyes locked on me before suddenly kicking the nearby bouquet of imported white roses off its stand.

"Let's go," he spat coldly, grabbing Sofia and storming out of the church without so much as a backward glance.

It became so quiet in the massive church that one could hear a pin drop. Then, the sound system started blaring a sad breakup song at the worst possible time.

Riccardo's right-hand man hurriedly cut the power before giving me an awkward, apologetic smile. "Uh… Elena, the Don was just messing around. Please don't take it to heart."

I couldn't be bothered to listen to his excuses. The truth simply didn't matter to me anymore.

I just gave a flat hum, lifted my dress, and walked off the altar expressionlessly. The second I stepped out of the church doors, a torrential downpour began.

A black limousine slowly pulled up in front of me. The window rolled down, revealing Riccardo's handsome but tense face. "It's pouring. Get in. I'll take you home."

He spoke in a much softer tone this time, making it sound like he was reluctantly backing down.

Looking through the window, I saw Sofia sitting in the backseat. She was looking right at me, a smug, victorious look in her eyes.

I looked away and said, "No thanks."

Riccardo's face hardened instantly. "Don't test my patience, Elena."

I simply turned my head away and stopped looking at him.

"Drive!" he spat through clenched teeth.

The engine roared, and the muddy water the car kicked up splattered all over my pristine white dress.

As I watched the taillights fade into the distance, a bitter, self-mocking smirk appeared on my face. I pulled out my phone and made an international call.

"Mr. Moretti, the family trust my father left behind comes with the condition that I have to return to Saroly to take over the old estate, and I can never set foot in Rahora again for the rest of my life, right?"

"That's right, Ms. Leone. The moment you set foot in Saroly, your ten-billion-dollar fortune will be unfrozen."

Brushing the rainwater off my face, I said in a low voice, "Alright. I'll do it."

Sofia was left seeing stars as she lay sprawled on the floor, looking utterly disheveled."Ugh! How dare you hit me? I'm going to kill you, Elena! I swear I'll kill you!"I walked over with a blank expression, slowly crouched down, and clamped a hand tightly around her throat. My nails dug so deep into her skin they almost drew blood. "You want me dead, eh? We'll see if you even make it out of this winery alive today."Sofia's eyes went wide with terror as she frantically hit my arm.The arrogance in her eyes was finally replaced by pure fear. "Let go… Riccardo, help me…"She choked out her pathetic, raspy pleas. But Riccardo just stood there silently, not lifting a single finger to help her.I let out a cold laugh, released her, and shoved her hard onto the floor. "If you ever act crazy in front of me again, I'll make sure you don't live to see another day."Lying on the floor, Sofia coughed violently, her face a snotty, tear-streaked mess.I stood up and turned to look at Ri

Riccardo looked a lot thinner than he did five years ago. His once-handsome face was drawn tight, and his eyes were lifeless. The moment he saw me, he was so shocked that his pupils contracted sharply and his body trembled slightly. "Elena…"Before I could even react, he came rushing toward me like a madman. As he held me tightly against his chest, his scalding tears instantly soaked through the shoulder of my dress. "It's been five years. Do you have any idea what these five years have been like for me?"Why did you leave without a word? Why did you leave me all alone in that hell?"He was holding me so tight I could barely breathe."Let go," I spat coldly. But he only held on tighter. "No! Elena, I know I messed up. I sent Sofia away. There's nothing between us. That marriage certificate we had back then was fake. But only because my mother forced me to—""I said, let me go, Mr. Mazzoni."I took a deep breath before shoving him off me. "If you're here to look at the art, the

After a long, exhausting trip, I finally set foot on Sarolian soil."Elena."An elderly voice rang out.I turned around, my eyes instantly welling up with tears. "Grandpa."The former Sarolian Don, a man who once ruled with an iron fist, had tears in his eyes. "You're home, and that's all that matters, my sweet girl."Sitting in the back of the limousine, I watched the rolling mountains and old estates blur past the window.Years ago, after my mother died giving birth to me, my Padre sent me to Rahora to keep me safe. The only condition he put on the ten-billion-dollar trust fund he left behind was that I had to return to Saroly. He was afraid things might not go well for me in Rahora, so he made sure I always had a backup plan."You're not leaving this time, are you?" Grandpa asked, his eyes full of tenderness.I leaned my head on his shoulder. "I'm not leaving again, Grandpa. This is my home."He let out a hearty laugh. "Good. We don't need Rahora's mess anyway. From now o

The wedding of the century, which was supposed to make headlines across the city, ended with the bride never showing up and the groom storming off.The scandal spread like wildfire, and before long, the Mazzoni family had become the laughingstock of the entire city.Riccardo tore through the streets in his car. "Elena, what exactly are you trying to do?"He stared straight ahead, his hands trembling slightly on the wheel. He couldn't wrap his head around all of this. Why would the woman who used to look at him like he hung the moon deal such a devastating blow to him?He should have known the second he saw that wedding dress slashed to pieces and drenched in paint. No one but Elena would have dared do something like that. But why? Was it because of that fake marriage certificate? He didn't even want to do it. He had only gone through with it to pacify Rosa and secure power within the family. Why wouldn't she even give him a chance to explain himself? The sports car screeched to

The guests trailing behind Riccardo all gasped. The lavish custom-made wedding dress in the middle of the room had been slashed to shreds, with black paint splattered all over it.The veins in Riccardo's temples bulged as he let out a roar, "Who did this?"There were only 20 minutes left before the ceremony, and this dress was in the style I had specifically wanted. How was he supposed to explain this to me when I got here? The butler explained in a trembling voice, "Don Mazzoni, it was already in this state when we came in earlier. Could someone from a rival family have tampered with it while it was being transported?"Riccardo closed his eyes, fighting to suppress the rising panic in his chest. "Get another dress from the best bridal shop in the city. I want a replacement here in ten minutes!"The butler went deathly pale as he scrambled out of the room on his hands and knees.Riccardo's right-hand man stepped forward quietly and murmured, "Don Mazzoni, the Donna isn't here ye

I was discharged from the hospital that very night. Riccardo personally drove me back to the manor. He sat right beside me, thoughtfully handing me a cup of warm water, his dark eyes full of tenderness.Sofia was sitting on the couch across from us, leisurely peeling an apple. This whole situation was so absurd I wanted to sneer.Right then, Riccardo's phone buzzed. He got up and walked toward the balcony to take the call.As the glass door slid shut behind him, Sofia finally dropped her fake, sweet act.She met my cold stare dead-on and asked in a provocative tone, "How do you still have the nerve to stick around?"I merely looked at her coldly without responding. She let out a scoff, the contempt in her eyes becoming even more evident. "Honestly, I've never met anyone more pathetic than you in my entire life. You know damn well he only loves me."And that stunt at the wedding was merely something I threw out as a joke."I slowly raised my eyes to look at her. "So what? No m
