Chapter 5

Author: Perfect Timing
When I heard someone mention the drunk driver, I sneered.

.

That murderer had not shown his face once.

When I went to the police station, I found out that his friend had bailed him out.

Before they left, they only told the police that they would see us in court.

I was extremely furious. I immediately asked my lawyer friend to represent Luther in this case.

My friend, Phoebe Grant, was very shocked that I did not ask Meg for help.

After all, Meg was one of the best lawyers in the city. If she represented Luther in court, we would definitely be able to put that drunk driver in prison.

I smiled bitterly. I did not tell her that it was because I could not get through to Meg, and Meg did not believe Luther was in trouble.

Hence, I simply gave an excuse. I said that Meg was bogged down by other cases.

However, three days later in court, Phoebe and I bumped into Meg and Hugh.

Hugh seemed very afraid. He kept very close to Meg.

Meg did not push him away. Instead, she comforted him patiently.

Maybe Phoebe’s and my gazes were too sharp because Meg and Hugh looked up. They were stunned when they saw Phoebe and me dressed in formal attire.

“What are you doing here? You shouldn’t be making a scene here!”

Meg frowned and looked impatient.

She probably thought that I was here for her.

I just glanced at her coldly before dragging Phoebe inside.

Meg’s eyes widened when she saw me walking toward the door. She ran over and stopped me.

“You’re the family of the scammer of a plaintiff?”

She very quickly put two and two together. “So, that day when you said your father got into a car accident, you were referring to this case! Easton, you can withdraw the lawsuit now!”

I glared at her. “What are you talking about? What scammer? Why would I withdraw the lawsuit?”

Meg thought that she had hit me where it hurt. She was smug.

“Why? Isn’t your dad a scammer? He’s very healthy, isn’t he? He must’ve wanted to get some money for your brother’s house. It’s too bad! The person he tried to scam is Hugh!

“Hugh has already appointed me to be his lawyer. With me here, you won’t be able to get what you want!”

I slapped her, and the loud sound rang out.

I could not control my anger.

She believed Hugh’s words without any hesitation again!

Scammer? How dare she think that?

I only felt disgusted when I looked at the face I once loved so deeply.

“Meg, when did I say that the person who got into the car accident was my father? It’s been so many days. Have you even visited your father?”

Meg held her hand against her cheek and looked frantic.

“What are you doing? How can you hit her?”

Hugh quickly rushed over and shielded Meg.

“Meg, don’t believe what he said. He knows how important Luther is to you, so he’s trying to mess with you on purpose.

“Didn’t you tell me that Luther only goes out on the weekends?

“It was a weekday, so it must not be Luther. After this ends, I’ll accompany you to visit Luther.”

Meg looked touched.

When she looked at me, her eyes were extremely cold.

“Easton, you’re vicious! If Hugh hadn’t stepped in to remind me, I would have believed your lies!

“You were putting up an act with Aunt Lydia previously, and now, you’re still cursing my dad?

“Just wait and see. I won’t let you win!”

She spoke viciously, but I was not listening. All I could think of was Luther’s ashen face underneath the white cloth.

I did not expect Hugh to be the drunk driver who killed Luther.

I could not help but lunge at Hugh. I wrapped my hands tightly around his neck.

“Easton, you’re mad!”

Meg grabbed my arms and threw me onto the floor.

Due to the video, people started to change their minds about Meg. Some people thought she was blinded by her love for Hugh, and some of them felt that she was a victim too. I felt it was hilarious when I read those comments. I did not know if Meg did it on purpose, but Lydia, I, or even Luther, who was dead, would never forgive her. Hugh was despicable, but Meg was even more so. She was our family. She should have been protecting us, but she failed to do so.The damage was not reversible. On the day Meg received her sentence, no one went to the courtroom. It was another form of punishment for her. After that, I heard from Lydia that Meg had killed herself in prison. Before she died, she was still muttering apologies. She said she was sorry to Luther, Lydia, and me. I felt relieved when I heard that she was dead. I hated her. It was impossible not to. I hated her betrayal, I hated her affair, I hated her distrust, and I hated that she had a hand in Luther’s dea

Someone recorded and uploaded what happened in court the other day. Very soon, it went viral as major news outlets started sharing the video. [Lawyer Helps Father’s Killer Get Acquitted.]In this era, sensational headlines worked better. Very soon, someone managed to find Meg and Hugh’s information. Everyone was berating them, just like the crowd did the other day. Hugh was still smug. He really thought that Meg had eradicated all the evidence. In light of all the attention on them, he started a livestream. “That’s right. I was the one who was driving, but I might not be the killer. He’s trying to frame me. You guys don’t have any evidence, so you can’t comment on that!“I was only speeding, and I only drank a little bit. They only revoked my license.“If you keep defaming me, I’ll sue you.“As for Easton… Hah! I knew Meg first. How are you certain that he didn’t break us up?” Hugh said in the livestream. After a while, his livestream was taken down. Most netizens

Meg went back home in a daze. I had left her a “surprise” at home. I thought of her arrogance, her distrust, and her mockery. I did not want to forgive her that easily. Meg opened the door and turned on the lights. Then, she saw the pot that I placed on the table. The pot looked familiar to her. It was Luther’s pot. I had left a note.[This is the chili that Luther made, just because you mentioned that you liked it. He immediately made it and delivered it.][If he hadn’t brought the chili here, do you think he’d still be dead?]Meg collapsed onto the floor and started howling like a wild animal. “Dad! Dad! I was wrong! I know I was wrong! It’s all my fault!”I snorted when I watched the surveillance footage. It was too late to regret what she had done.Luther would not come back to life. After she calmed down, she tried to contact Lydia and me. She wanted to visit Luther’s grave. Of course, neither of us agreed to her request. Meg was trying to salvage our relat

Lydia became more agitated as she spoke, and she started to sob. “In order to get full custody of you, he didn’t even ask for anything from your cheating mother! You knew how much he had suffered by taking nothing!“However, after he got into the accident, what did you do? You didn’t even show up at the funeral!“Did you help Hugh to get acquitted?“Was it you?”Lydia’s face was flushed with anger. I was afraid she would faint, so I quickly stopped her. “Lydia, there is no point in being angry over this type of person. I’ll sue them again.”Lydia calmed down a little. She sighed and patted my shoulder. “Easton, I’m so thankful that you’re here. Even after you divorce Meg, I’ll still think of you as my family.”I smiled and nodded. Meg was already in a daze. She kept muttering, “How could it be my dad? Why was it my dad?”Hugh trembled. He wanted to comfort her, but her bloodshot eyes scared him.“Didn’t you say the man who scammed you was an old man whom you didn’t kn

“No, this is impossible. How can it be true? Easton, you’re lying to me, aren’t you? These bills are fake, aren’t they?”I sneered, “That’s right. I’m lying to you.”When she heard me say that, she let out a sigh of relief. “How can you joke about something like this? This is too much! But it’s true that I haven’t seen my dad for a long time. After I send Hugh back, let’s visit him.”Hugh did not expect that Meg would refuse to divorce me. From the sound of it, she wanted to reconcile with me. His smile froze on his face. Meg did not even spare a glance at Hugh. She pulled out her phone and gave Luther a call. However, the call did not go through. Meg started to feel a little anxious. “Why is the number not in service? Did my dad accidentally toggle some settings?”She wanted to get an answer from me desperately. I smiled and did not speak. It was not a good feeling to be ignored. However, Meg had always treated me like that. I stood still and watched as she s

I looked at Hugh, who was standing behind her. When he heard the word “divorce,” he was elated. Meg followed my gaze and turned around. She was a little dumbfounded when she saw Hugh’s grin. Very soon, she pretended she had not seen that. She stood there quietly for a long time. “Are you really going to divorce me? You should know that a family like yours will not land someone like me again after we get divorced.” A family like mine. I was still a little hurt when I heard Meg say that. When we first got married, I asked her many times if it bothered her that my family was poor. If she had said yes at that time, or even hesitated a little, I would have reconsidered our relationship. However, she had never expressed that. Her words destroyed any feelings I still had for her. However, she was still trying to salvage it. “Easton, think it through. My dad’s so kind to you. He’ll be very upset if you divorce me!”When she mentioned Luther, I laughed. This time, I was
